Many people work with an independent broker because they can save you research time by being able to compare several plans side by side. They consider your personal needs, clearly present your options and help you enroll in the plan of your choice. At ABC Medicare Plans Broker we explain all the different parts of Medicare A, B, C and D. We compare a Medicare Advantage Plan to a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) with a drug card. We explain the difference in premium cost and the out-of-pocket potential expenses, the difference in extra benefits and the difference in doctor choice.

A Medicare broker brings knowledge and experience to work with a prospective client. When I meet a client, the first things I let them know are (1) that there is no cost to work with me, and that (2) I work with all of the carriers in the market and my job is to help them identify a plan or an option that will serve their needs.

I bring nearly 30 years of experience to the table when I am getting to know someone and am extremely familiar with the transition from employer group plans to Medicare. The transition can feel overwhelming and my goal is to always help the consumer feel at ease to make the transition smooth - AND dare I say enjoyable.

Lastly, my hope is to build a lifetime relationship with everyone I work with. I treat each of my clients like they are a my parents, or a close relative and want to build and earn their trust.

A Medicare agent like myself takes away the frustration and confusion of having to figure it out on your own. I educate you and then walk you through the process step by step. And best of all, I stay with you even after you enroll. When you have questions about your plan, you can call me first. I'm always there to answer your questions.

With over 18 years of experience helping seniors get the extra benefits they deserve, I’ve seen firsthand how overwhelming Medicare can be. That’s why working with a knowledgeable agent can make all the difference. Here’s why:

Maximizing Your Benefits – Many seniors miss out on extra help, such as dental, vision, hearing, and even money-saving programs. I specialize in finding benefits you may not know exist.

Simplifying the Process – Medicare is complicated, but I break it down so you can easily understand your options and make confident decisions.

Access to Multiple Plans – Instead of calling different companies, I compare plans for you, ensuring you get the best coverage for your health needs and budget.

No Cost to You – My services are completely free. I’m paid by insurance carriers, so you get expert help at no extra charge.

Year-Round Support – Medicare isn’t just about enrollment. I’m here to assist with claims, plan reviews, and any changes throughout the year.

Avoiding Costly Mistakes – I help seniors avoid penalties, coverage gaps, and expensive surprises by ensuring they enroll correctly and on time.

Peace of Mind – You shouldn’t have to figure this out alone. I make sure you feel confident that your healthcare needs are covered.

The governmental agency, Medicare, does not actually employ licensed insurance agents. Employees of the agency do not assist beneficiaries in selecting the 'right' plan for folks. CAUTION: If someone calls you and says they work for Medicare and want to help you select a plan, hang up the phone immediately! This function can only be administered by licensed insurance agents, who are required to: Bi-annual Continuing Education (24 credit hours, 3 of which must be on Ethics) and Annual Certification and Training on specific plan benefits of all the plans they represent. There are different types of licensed insurance agents: independent self-employed, agency-employed agents, telemarketing firm employed agents and captive agents employed by insurance carriers which are only allowed to represent the carrier they are employed by. While there are certainly 'good' and 'bad' agents in all of these roles, I'd recommend using either of the first two I mentioned. Independent, self-employed agents represent a variety of plans and carriers and can compare 'apples to apples' between the various plans. These agents, such as myself, rely on referrals to build up their business, which means they want to do the best that they can for their clients.

First of all, experience. A seasoned Medicare Agent can walk you through several Medicare Supplement plans that fit your needs. Personally picking a plan through an agent can save you money. I recently talked with an 84 year old paying over $320/ month on Plan F

She now pays $216/ month on Plan G. The difference in premium more than covers the Part B deductible and still saves her almost $1000 / year. Medicare Advantage plans work similarly. Finding the right plan and making the right choice is extremely important and partnering with an agent that has your best interest at heart means the world to people.

Working with a licensed Medicare agent offers more than just help picking a plan — it provides peace of mind. Here’s why:

Trust: A good agent works in your best interest, not the insurance company’s. They build long-term relationships based on honesty, transparency, and dependability — so you always have someone in your corner.

Expertise: Medicare is complex. Between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Supplements, and Part D drug plans — plus the yearly changes — a seasoned agent stays current and cuts through the confusion for you.

Personalized Guidance: Your health needs, medications, and doctors are unique. An agent takes time to understand your situation and recommends plans that fit you — not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Time-Saving: Instead of spending hours researching plans or navigating enrollment forms, your agent does the heavy lifting. That means fewer headaches and less chance of costly mistakes.

No Cost to You: Medicare agents are compensated by the insurance companies, not you. Their help is free — whether you enroll through them or not — so there’s no reason not to take advantage of the support.

Annual Reviews: Your health needs and plan options can change each year. A great agent checks in with you before the Annual Enrollment Period to ensure your coverage still works for you.

Help When You Need It: If a claim gets denied, your doctor switches networks, or you have billing issues — you’re not on your own. You have a trusted professional to call.

Local Knowledge & Carrier Access: Independent agents often represent multiple carriers, so they aren’t tied to just one company. They can compare plans across the board and help you find the best value based on what's available locally.

When it comes to Medicare, the options can feel overwhelming. Working with a Medicare agent can make the process much easier and more understandable. Here’s why:

1. A Medicare agent can help you understand all the options available and find a plan that best fits your unique healthcare needs and budget.

2. Medicare has a lot of rules and deadlines. An agent keeps you informed about important enrollment periods, helps you avoid costly mistakes, and ensures you’re not missing out on any benefits you’re entitled to.

3. Medicare agents work with a variety of insurance companies. They can show you plans from multiple providers, so you get to compare different options in one place, rather than having to do all the legwork yourself.

4. The Medicare system can be confusing with all its parts and plans. A Medicare agent can simplify things, explain the details clearly, and even assist with paperwork. This saves you time and reduces stress, so you can focus on other important things.

5. Your needs might change over time. Having a Medicare agent means you have someone to call when you need help adjusting your plan, understanding new benefits, or making changes during open enrollment.

6. Medicare agents don’t charge you for their services—they’re compensated by insurance carriers. That means you get expert help at no extra cost to you.

Working with a Medicare agent is about getting the peace of mind that you’re making the best decisions for your healthcare coverage without feeling overwhelmed. It’s like having a knowledgeable guide by your side to help you navigate the Medicare maze!

Answered by Ken Banks on April 8, 2025

Broker Licensed in GA, AL, FL, LA, NC & SC

Answered by Ken Banks Medicare Insurance Agent
There are several reasons you might want to work with a Medicare agent. The first is probably the most obvious: Medicare is really complex. It has several different parts—most people know about Part A and Part B, but there are also Parts C and D—and a huge number of plans. You cannot get through all of this successfully without some professional help.

Agents serve a second function: they allow for comparisons to be made of the plans offered by the various insurance companies. They help you to see the ways in which the plans differ and are similar in a manner that makes for a more straightforward selection of an appropriate plan. This is no small feat, given that the plans run into the hundreds if not thousands, when one considers all the variations, not to mention the kinds of eliminatory quirks and features that some of the plans have.

Besides, having agents is darn important if you want to avoid penalties for not being covered. Agents make certain that you sign up for the right plans and that you do it on time. They are very supportive and almost always present in your life; in fact, they review your plans annually and with a lot of attention to any changes in your health that might direct you toward a different option in the future. All in all, you are way better off with plans that an agent helps you with.

Additionally, agents help in solving claims and billing issues, acting as arbiters to settle any disagreements that arise between you and your insurance provider. And often, their help comes at no charge to you: they earn their pay from the insurance companies, not from you, so they don't add to the cost of your insurance.

The regulations that oversee Medicare are frequently made to change, and having an agent means you don't have to keep current on those developments; they do that for you. To sum up the pros: you save time, you save some money, you save a fair amount of anxiety, and the way of working with your health coverage is just clearer and less cloudy.

I will make my recommendations but my client will always make the choice. Finally i will always keep my client informed of new options and be available to them.

There are usually lots of plan options available in your area and a lot of nuances to each plan that an experienced agent would be aware of and be able to go over with you. They can help you narrow down your options and pick the best one for you based off your individual situation. There also is not any additional charge to consult with an agent or enroll in a plan through them so you do not gain anything by enrolling on your own some public site or directly with a carrier.

It is best to get some advice as to how Medicare works and how it works with a Medicare supplement and Medicare Part D's RX plan. Going over costs, A&B Coverage, deductibles, possible premium increases, etc. Also which carrier to use...the stability of the carrier.

Working with a Medicare agent provides you with expertise and guidance before AND after your enrollment! We must take and pass rigorous training and know the rules of Medicare, and we can guide you for all of your Medicare journey!

When people enroll with an insurance company telesales agent, by mail, or on a website directly with the insurance company and they need assistance or advice, they must use the general company member services for future advice and assistance. Each time they call, they will probably get a different service team agent. While they are helpful and know Medicare rules and their offerings, they don't know YOU and your history. They may not be familiar with YOUR local market and changes to it.

We're here to help you now and when you need us in the future as your Agent of Record.

It good to work with an agent for a couple reason, I would say the number one reason would be to work with a non-captured agent (an agent that works with multiple insurance companies) so you can get a side-by-side comparison of different plans in your area from a non-bias, professional opinion, (2) working with an agent gives you someone to call for any and all questions or concerns, instead of having to navigate on your own, (3) Does not cost any extra to use an agent vs trying to do it on your on.

Would it be a bad idea to use the knowledge and experience of a licensed health insurance agent/broker who also has the annual Medicare certifications and insurance carrier trainings? It costs you nothing, but can gain you everything.

Although you may be completely comfortable choosing and self-enrolling into either a Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Supplement and Prescription Drug Plan, working with an certified agent/broker might mean the difference of you paying thousands of dollars more during the year by not having the knowledge of how different plans may or may not meet your specific medical needs. Can you afford to choose the wrong plan yourself and have a huge medical bill cause you financial hardship?

What option is most aligned with my current healthcare needs, and does this make sense with what my future self wants? Beneficiaries need to anticipate what their health might look like 3-5 years from now. We don't always know what tomorrow holds, but maybe that surgery you're putting off, or that procedure that needs to be done "at some point", needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. How do these plans, today, support my long term goals?

As a broker that represents all the major carriers in your market, I can advise you which one is best suited for what it is that YOU SPECIFICALLY are trying to achieve. No two people are in the exact same boat, and without somebody to help you navigate the complexities of Medicare, you run the risk of not being enrolled in the plan best tailored to meet your particular needs.

Unbiased information is crutial to make any informed decision, but that information is particularly difficult to obtain when it relates to your Medicare coverage. Shopping tools such as Medicare.gov can be a good place to start, but those tools are based on algorithms designed to give general information to masses of people. You can call each carrier, but they can only discuss their own plans. They are not able to compare themselves to each other.

Work with an independent agent that represents (at a minimum) at least 3 carriers in your area. That agent is able to compare those plans to each other and in theory has no financial incentive to market one of those plans over another.

Questions I would ask any agent before agreeing to work with them:

1 - How many carriers offered in my zip code do you represent? (minimum 3)

2 - Do you represent both Medicare Supplement and also Medicare Advantage plans? (the impartial agent will offer both as options)

3 - How many years have you been certified to market Medicare plans? (the experienced agent will have at least 3 years experience or will be working with a mentor who has at least 5)

4 - If I have an issue and you are on vacation, who do I call? (the well-prepared agent will have an office staff to assist you when they are unavailable).
