What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answered by 898 licensed agents
Trust: A good agent works in your best interest, not the insurance company’s. They build long-term relationships based on honesty, transparency, and dependability — so you always have someone in your corner.
Expertise: Medicare is complex. Between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Supplements, and Part D drug plans — plus the yearly changes — a seasoned agent stays current and cuts through the confusion for you.
Personalized Guidance: Your health needs, medications, and doctors are unique. An agent takes time to understand your situation and recommends plans that fit you — not a one-size-fits-all solution.
Time-Saving: Instead of spending hours researching plans or navigating enrollment forms, your agent does the heavy lifting. That means fewer headaches and less chance of costly mistakes.
No Cost to You: Medicare agents are compensated by the insurance companies, not you. Their help is free — whether you enroll through them or not — so there’s no reason not to take advantage of the support.
Annual Reviews: Your health needs and plan options can change each year. A great agent checks in with you before the Annual Enrollment Period to ensure your coverage still works for you.
Help When You Need It: If a claim gets denied, your doctor switches networks, or you have billing issues — you’re not on your own. You have a trusted professional to call.
Local Knowledge & Carrier Access: Independent agents often represent multiple carriers, so they aren’t tied to just one company. They can compare plans across the board and help you find the best value based on what's available locally.

1. Guidance Through a Complex System
Medicare has multiple parts (A, B, C, D), plus Medigap supplements.
A good agent explains the differences in plain language so you know what fits your situation.
2. Plan Comparisons Made Easy
Agents can run side-by-side comparisons of Medicare Advantage, Part D, and Medigap plans.
They’ll point out things ads don’t always highlight — like doctor networks, prior authorizations, and out-of-pocket costs.
3. Personalized Recommendations
Instead of just looking at “average” benefits, an agent considers your doctors, prescriptions, travel needs, and budget.
That means you avoid the trap of picking a plan that looks cheap but won’t actually cover your real needs.
4. Help Avoiding Mistakes
Common pitfalls:
Missing the enrollment deadline
Picking a drug plan that doesn’t cover your meds
Thinking you can switch anytime (you usually can’t)
An agent helps you sidestep these costly errors.
5. No Extra Cost to You
Agents are paid by the insurance companies, not by you.
Whether you sign up on your own or through an agent, your premium is the same.
6. Ongoing Support
A good Medicare agent doesn’t disappear after enrollment.
They can:
Help if you have claim issues
Check each year if your plan still fits
Alert you if a better option comes along during Open Enrollment.
7. Local Knowledge
National ads don’t tell you which doctors or hospitals in your area actually take a plan.
Local agents usually know which providers are reliable and which plans have hidden hurdles.
Bottom Line:
Working with a Medicare agent saves you time, stress, and costly mistakes, and gives you a real person to call if something goes wrong.

5. **Updates on Changes:** Medicare rules and plans can change frequently. A knowledgeable agent can keep you informed about any changes that may impact your coverage or options.
6. **No Cost to You:** Most Medicare agents are compensated by the insurance companies, meaning their services are typically free to you as the beneficiary.

✅ Reasons to Work With a Medicare Advantage Agent
1. Personalized Guidance
o An agent looks at your specific doctors, prescriptions, and budget to find plans that actually fit you.
o Call centers and TV ads usually push one or two plans without checking if they’re the right match.
2. Access to Multiple Companies & Plans
o A local or independent agent typically represents several insurance companies, giving you side-by-side comparisons.
o This helps avoid being locked into just one company’s plan.
3. Cost Savings
o The agent’s job is to make sure your plan covers your medications at the lowest cost and that you’re not overpaying in premiums or copays.
4. Help With Enrollment & Paperwork
o They handle the application, ensure it’s submitted correctly, and make sure your coverage starts when it should.
5. Ongoing Support After Enrollment
o If you have billing issues, need to switch doctors, or run into claims problems, your agent can help—something you don’t get with an 800 number.
6. Annual Plan Reviews
o Medicare Advantage plans change every year. A good agent checks your plan during Open Enrollment to confirm it’s still the best choice.
7. No Extra Cost to You
o You don’t pay the agent. They are paid by the insurance company, so you get their expertise at no cost.
8. Local Knowledge
o Local agents often know which hospital systems, specialists, and pharmacies are easiest to work with in your area.

A good Medicare agent will:
* Help you understand the differences between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement (Medigap), and Part D prescription drug plans.
* Compare plans from multiple insurance companies to help you find coverage that fits your healthcare needs and budget.
* Explain provider networks, prescription drug coverage, and estimated out-of-pocket costs before you enroll.
* Make sure you don’t miss important enrollment deadlines or face unnecessary penalties.
* Continue to be a resource after you enroll, helping you review your coverage each year as your needs or available plans change.
The best part is that there is typically no additional cost to work with a licensed Medicare agent. The insurance company pays the agent, not you, so you receive personalized guidance at no extra cost.
Choosing the right Medicare coverage is an important decision. Having an experienced agent by your side can give you confidence that you’re selecting a plan that’s a good fit both now and in the years ahead.

1. Medicare is complicated
There are multiple parts (A, B, C, D), different enrollment periods, and lots of plan options. A good agent helps you understand what actually applies to your situation instead of leaving you to decode it alone.
2. Personalized plan recommendations
Rather than guessing, an agent can match plans to your:
Doctors and hospitals
Prescription drugs
Budget
Travel needs
That’s especially helpful when comparing things like Medicare Advantage vs. Medigap + Part D.
3. Access to multiple insurance companies
Independent agents typically represent several insurers, not just one. That means they can compare plans side-by-side and show you options you might not find on your own.
4. Help avoiding costly mistakes
Missing an enrollment deadline or picking the wrong coverage can lead to:
Late enrollment penalties
Coverage gaps
Higher long-term costs
An agent helps you stay on track and avoid those issues.
5. Ongoing support (not just sign-up)
A good agent doesn’t disappear after enrollment. They can help you:
Review your plan annually
Adjust coverage if your needs change
Resolve billing or coverage questions
6. No direct cost to you
In most cases, agents are paid by the insurance companies, not by you. So you get guidance without paying a consulting fee.
7. Saves time and stress
Instead of researching dozens of plans yourself, an agent narrows it down quickly and explains the differences in plain language.
One thing to keep in mind:
Not all agents are the same. It’s worth asking:
How many companies do you represent?
Do you specialize in Medicare?
Will you help me every year or just at enrollment?

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent? I'm gonna divide my answer into two parts.
No. 1: Why should I work with a Medicare sales agent who works for a company versus an independent broker that works for a large entity like Health Markets and brokers for a number of different carriers? So, why should you work with a Medicare agent that works for Humana, United Healthcare, Alignment, etc.? I wouldn't. They're there to sell you a policy, and then the company follows up. If you have a problem, do you call your agent? Well, you could, and they may or may not call you back. They don't necessarily have an obligation to do that. They will more than likely have you contact the customer service department. There are some agents that will meet their commitment, but don't assume that they will. Most people don't even know the phone number of the agent they spoke to.
Now, let's go on to the second question: What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare broker? This is somebody that works in the community, represents at least five companies, and has been doing this for a long time—probably 10 years. If you can find somebody like that, hit gold! This person can assess your needs and do a diagnostic of your situation—what doctors you see, what drugs you take, nearby facilities, family history, projected costs. If you've got a spouse, are they going to care for you if you become disabled?
So, I really get to know my client's whole situation, and we can pivot around problems that we can anticipate. For example, if we know you're going to need a couple of implants, you're going to need a policy that covers those implants. Then we drill down and find the implant policies. You need to find a good cardiologist who can do that valve replacement. Well, maybe we're going to go up to Cedars-Sinai or Mayo Clinic, or maybe we want to stay with our Medicare Advantage company and see which cardiologists are in-network and if they’re truly pros.
Working with a broker who is experienced and willing to dive deep with you can honestly save your life because they can anticipate your needs and provide resources as you need them, as your relationship evolves. It's about building a trusting, long-term relationship where they will care for you. So that's the main answer—caring for you.

Medicare isn’t just “Part A and B.” There are:
Medigap vs Medicare Advantage
Part D drug plans
Enrollment windows and penalties
A Medicare agent breaks it down in plain English, so you don’t accidentally choose a plan that costs you more later.
2️⃣ You Don’t Pay More for Using an Agent
This surprises a lot of people:
Medicare agents are paid by insurance companies
Your premium is the same whether you use an agent or not
So you get expert guidance at no extra cost.
3️⃣ Access to Multiple Insurance Companies
Calling an insurance company gives you one option.
Working with an independent Medicare agent means:
Multiple carriers
Multiple plan types
Side-by-side comparisons
That means better coverage and better pricing — not just what one company sells.
4️⃣ Help Choosing the Right Plan — Not Just Any Plan
A good Medicare agent looks at:
Your doctors
Your prescriptions
Your budget
Your travel habits
So you don’t end up with a plan that looks good on paper but fails when you actually need care.
5️⃣ Ongoing Support After Enrollment
Medicare doesn’t stop after you enroll.
An agent helps with:
Annual plan reviews
Prescription changes
Billing issues
Claim problems
Switching plans when your needs change
You have a real person to call, not an 800 number.
6️⃣ Protection From Costly Mistakes
Choosing the wrong plan can lead to:
Late enrollment penalties
Higher out-of-pocket costs
Losing guaranteed Medigap rights
A Medicare agent helps you avoid mistakes that can cost you thousands over time.
7️⃣ Advocacy When Problems Come Up
If something goes wrong:
Doctor not covered
Prescription denied
Billing issue
Your agent can step in and advocate on your behalf, saving you hours of frustration.
8️⃣ Annual Reviews = Peace of Mind
Plans change every year.
Your health can change too.
A Medicare agent reviews your plan annually to make sure:
You’re still in the best option
You’re not overpaying

Conversely, if you work directly with a specific carrier agent (often referred to as a "captured agent"), you'll only be pitched - and be able to choose from - that specific insurance carrier's portfolio of products. They're not going to tell you about better priced options from competing carriers.
You want to work with an independent agent/broker so you can get a bigger picture look at all of the options available to you. It doesn't cost you anything extra to work with an independent agent/broker/agency (you'll get the same products at the same price as if you worked directly with the carrier itself) and you'll often get better service and have a single-point-of-contact when questions or scenarios arise that you may need help navigating.
Independent agents/brokers get paid an ongoing/residual commission by the insurance carriers, so it's very much in the agent/broker's best interest to make sure you're getting your questions answered and your products 'serviced' in a timely manner.
In short... there are no downsides to working with an independent agent/broker/agency... only upsides.

One of the biggest advantages of working with an agent is personalized guidance. Your health situation, medications, preferred doctors, and budget are unique. An experienced agent takes the time to evaluate all of those factors and match you with a plan that fits your lifestyle—not just a generic recommendation.
Another key benefit is access to multiple insurance carriers. Independent agents aren’t tied to just one company, which means they can compare plans across several providers to help you find the best value and coverage.
Best of all, there’s no cost to you for this service. Medicare agents are compensated by the insurance companies, so you get expert advice and support without paying extra.
Beyond enrollment, a good agent becomes a long-term resource. As your needs change, they can review your coverage annually, help you adjust your plan, and assist with any questions or concerns along the way.
In short, working with a Medicare agent gives you clarity, confidence, and peace of mind—so you can make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes.
If you’re approaching Medicare eligibility or just want a second opinion on your current coverage, having a trusted advisor by your side can make all the difference.

2. Medicare has a lot of rules and deadlines. An agent keeps you informed about important enrollment periods, helps you avoid costly mistakes, and ensures you’re not missing out on any benefits you’re entitled to.
3. Medicare agents work with a variety of insurance companies. They can show you plans from multiple providers, so you get to compare different options in one place, rather than having to do all the legwork yourself.
4. The Medicare system can be confusing with all its parts and plans. A Medicare agent can simplify things, explain the details clearly, and even assist with paperwork. This saves you time and reduces stress, so you can focus on other important things.

When reviewing Medicare options, one of the most important decisions is not just which plan you choose, but who is helping you compare those plans.
A key reason to work with a Non-Captive Medicare agent is that the conversation is not centered around one insurance company. A captive agent typically represents one carrier. A non-captive agent generally represents several carriers in your area, not every carrier, but often many of the major options available.
That matters because Medicare plans can look very different depending on your doctors, prescriptions, preferred hospitals, pharmacy, budget, and health needs. One company may have a stronger doctor network. Another may have better prescription coverage. Another may offer lower out-of-pocket exposure or additional benefits that better fit your situation.
It is also important to understand that working with an agent does not increase your plan premium. Agent commissions are already built into the plan pricing. Whether you enroll directly through the insurance company or work with an agent, the commission so going to be paid out regardless.
Since commissions from one Medicare plan to another are often similar, the value of working with a non-captive agent is the ability to compare multiple carriers and help narrow the options based on what actually matters to you.
The goal is not to force you into one company’s plan. The goal is to help you make a more informed decision through by reviewing several available options and matching the plan to your doctors, medications, health needs, and financial priorities.
In short, a non-captive Medicare agent can help you:
1. Compare multiple carriers instead of only one company
2. Review doctor and hospital networks
3. Check prescription drug coverage
4. Compare premiums, copays, deductibles, and maximum out-of-pocket limits
5. Understand the trade-offs between Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D plans

6. Ongoing Suppor: Many agents provide continued support even after you enroll, helping you with any questions or changes that may arise.

Agents serve a second function: they allow for comparisons to be made of the plans offered by the various insurance companies. They help you to see the ways in which the plans differ and are similar in a manner that makes for a more straightforward selection of an appropriate plan. This is no small feat, given that the plans run into the hundreds if not thousands, when one considers all the variations, not to mention the kinds of eliminatory quirks and features that some of the plans have.
Besides, having agents is darn important if you want to avoid penalties for not being covered. Agents make certain that you sign up for the right plans and that you do it on time. They are very supportive and almost always present in your life; in fact, they review your plans annually and with a lot of attention to any changes in your health that might direct you toward a different option in the future. All in all, you are way better off with plans that an agent helps you with.
Additionally, agents help in solving claims and billing issues, acting as arbiters to settle any disagreements that arise between you and your insurance provider. And often, their help comes at no charge to you: they earn their pay from the insurance companies, not from you, so they don't add to the cost of your insurance.
The regulations that oversee Medicare are frequently made to change, and having an agent means you don't have to keep current on those developments; they do that for you. To sum up the pros: you save time, you save some money, you save a fair amount of anxiety, and the way of working with your health coverage is just clearer and less cloudy.

A Medicare agent explains my options in plain English. With all the different parts of Medicare—Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and Part D—it can get confusing fast. An agent helps break it all down so I can understand what actually fits my needs.
An independent agent can compare multiple plans for me. Instead of being limited to one insurance company, an agent can shop several carriers at once to find plans that match my doctors, prescriptions, and budget.
They help make sure my medications and doctors are covered. An agent can check whether my prescriptions are on a plan’s formulary and whether my doctors and hospitals are in network, which helps me avoid unexpected costs.
Using a Medicare agent usually costs me nothing. My premium is the same whether I use an agent or enroll on my own, so I get professional guidance without paying extra.
A Medicare agent provides ongoing support. They can help after I enroll with questions, billing issues, or changes during Annual Enrollment if my needs change.

Offer a broad range of plans from multiple top-rated carriers — not just push one product
Complete a personalized needs assessment to match you with coverage that fits your health needs, travel habits, doctors, and budget
Research provider networks and hospital access to make sure you can get to top specialists and facilities before a crisis happens
Track changes in Medicare regulations so you stay protected year after year — and don’t miss out on plan improvements or fall into hidden traps
Support appeals, claims issues, and billing errors — because your coverage should work for you, not create more stress
Ask the right questions to uncover benefits you may be eligible for but didn’t know existed (like financial help or extra perks)
Help avoid costly enrollment mistakes — like lifetime penalties or being stuck in the wrong type of plan when your health changes
Agents complete training on an annual basis that enables us to be content experts on all things Medicare.

Key reasons to work with an agent include:
1. Personalized Expertise and Education
Navigating Complexity: Agents act as "translators," explaining the differences between Part A, B, C, and D, as well as Medigap versus Medicare Advantage.
Tailored Recommendations: They analyze your specific medications, preferred doctors, and lifestyle to find plans that fit your unique situation.
Preventing Costly Mistakes: Agents help you avoid lifelong late-enrollment penalties and ensure you don't miss critical enrollment windows.
2. Time and Money Savings
Comparison Shopping: Agents have access to quoting tools that compare dozens of plans from multiple carriers side-by-side in minutes.
Rate Monitoring: Many agents act as "rate watchdogs," notifying you if your premium is set to increase and helping you shop for a more competitive rate during Open Enrollment.
Standardized Plan Selection: For Medigap plans, where benefits are standardized across companies, an agent can quickly find the carrier offering the lowest premium for the exact same coverage.
3. Ongoing Advocacy and Support
Long-Term Relationship: Unlike calling a 1-800 number at a large carrier, an agent provides a dedicated point of contact year-round.
Claims and Benefit Help: If you have trouble with a denied claim or need help understanding a bill, your agent can act as an intermediary between you and the insurance company.
Annual Reviews: Your health needs change over time. Agents offer annual check-ins to ensure your current plan still provides the best value as your prescriptions or health status evolve.
4. Unbiased Advice (Independent Brokers)
Independent brokers represent many different insurance companies rather than just one. This allows them to provide an objective overview

The next reason which surprises a LOT of people is that it doesn't cost anything extra. The price you pay for a Medicare plan is the same whether you enroll by yourself or with an expert agent. Think about that for a second, you can either navigate the whole system alone, or you can get professional guidance for the exact same price. In fact, our motto here at Simple Retirement Benefits is "You're never alone as long as you're with us!"
Another benefit is that most (not all) agents and brokers provide is service and support as long as you are their client. With us, this is also for free and we're here all year long, not just when you're signing up.
Finally, we do the homework for you. Medicare rules and plans change every single year. Part of our support is to stay on top of it, so during your annual review, we can let you know what's new and make sure you're still in the plans that are appropriate for your situation taking into consideration your doctors and current medications (which can also change from one year to the next).
So, when you're deciding about whether or not to work with a Medicare agent, just ask yourself, "Would I prefer to go it alone or would it be better to have an expert in my corner for free?"

1. Medicare is complicated
Medicare isn’t just one plan. You have:
Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)
Medigap (Supplement) plans
An agent helps explain the differences in plain language and avoids costly mistakes.
2. Personalized plan matching
A good Medicare agent:
Checks your doctors and hospitals for network coverage
Reviews your prescriptions to lower drug costs
Compares premiums, deductibles, copays, and max out-of-pocket costs
This ensures the plan actually fits your healthcare needs—not just the cheapest premium.
3. Access to multiple insurance companies
Independent Medicare agents (like you 😊) can compare many carriers at once, not just one company’s plans, giving clients more options and better value.
4. Help avoiding penalties
Agents help people:
Enroll on time
Avoid late enrollment penalties for Part B and Part D
Understand Special Enrollment Periods when life changes happen
5. Ongoing support after enrollment
A Medicare agent doesn’t disappear after enrollment. They help with:
Plan changes during Annual Enrollment
Claims and billing issues
Prescription changes
Appeals and coverage questions
6. No extra cost to the client
Medicare agents are paid by the insurance companies—not the consumer—so clients get expert help at no additional cost.
7. Advocacy and peace of mind
If something goes wrong, your agent can:
Call the insurance company on your behalf
Explain denial letters
Help you switch plans if your needs change
This is especially valuable for seniors and caregivers who feel overwhelmed.
8. Local knowledge
Local agents understand:
Regional hospital systems
Local plan strengths and weaknesses
State-specific Medicare rules
That insight can make

1. Personalized Guidance: We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. We take time to understand your health needs, prescriptions, doctors, and budget to match you with the right plan—whether it's Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, or Part D drug coverage.
2. Access to Multiple Carriers: Unlike working directly with a single insurance company, we represent you, not the insurer. This means we can shop the market and offer unbiased comparisons from top-rated carriers to find the best fit for your situation.
3. Ongoing Support: Your healthcare needs can change—and so can Medicare plans. We provide year-round support, including annual reviews during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period, to ensure your coverage continues to meet your needs.
4. No Cost to You: Our services come at no additional cost. We're compensated by the insurance companies, not by our clients—so you get expert advice without extra fees.

2. If you sign up without a broker, you will rarely, if ever, get to talk to the same person twice. If you use me as your broker, you always have the same person, who knows your background and where you can go when you have questions.
3. Because I represent EVERY major Medicare Insurance company in Lincoln County, I can recommend the best choice for your situation. If you go directly to an insurance company, they will NEVER tell you if there is a better choice outside of their own organization. My loyalty is to my clients, NOT to any particular insurance company!
4. My service is FREE. I am paid a commission from whatever company or plan you choose, and that commission does not affect your monthly premium. (And insurance companies like to use brokers because then they don’t have to hire so many employees.)
5. Every year, during Open Enrollment, I send a calendar and reminder to all my clients to call me so we can make an annual coverage review. If your plan is still good, I will tell you not to make any changes. If your plan is no longer competitive or does not perform well, I will help you change to a plan that does. If you go directly to an insurance company, they will not provide you with this service.
6. I’m a Montanan! I speak English! If you simply call an insurance company to sign up, you’ll likely be talking to someone in New Jersey, India, or the Philippines, NOT to someone in Montana.
7. Instead of talking to someone in their 20s or 30s, who has no Idea what it’s really like to be on Medicare, talk to me! I’m on Medicare myself. I understand our generation, and I have over 30 years of insurance experience.

First, the relationship. A good agent doesn’t just enroll you in a plan and never speak to you again. Agents who value their clients take the time to review benefits every year, whether changes are needed or not. They get to know your specific situation and can provide guidance to your health needs and your budget.
Second, your needs can change. There is no “best” policy for everyone. Plans, networks, and benefits vary by area and can change from year to year, which is why it’s so important to understand what’s available to you annually. If you’re planning for something specific, like a surgery or ongoing treatment, knowing how your coverage will support you ahead of time is vital. The last thing we want is for clients to be uneducated about their coverage and surprised by costs when something happens.
Third, an agent helps you use your coverage. We want you to take advantage of the benefits you have. That’s when your coverage truly works for you. Our agency offers a wide range of policies to protect clients, and our service department helps with things like filing claims, so you don’t have to navigate that process alone. When something happens, your focus should be on getting better, not figuring out paperwork or next steps. That’s where your dedicated agent or agency steps in to guide you.
Finally, these services come at NO cost to you. Agents are paid commissions by the insurance carriers for the policies we write, so you never pay extra for our guidance, support, or ongoing service. There are many great agents who are ready to help guide you!

An independent agent will bring added value to your healthcare plan decisions, including:
• No Cost for Agent Services: You’ll pay exactly the same rate for your insurance plan if you enroll through an agent. Medicare insurance agents are paid by the insurance companies they represent. The client pays exactly the same rate for their Medicare plan, regardless if they use an insurance agent. There should never be an extra fee or cost for enrolling through an agent.
• Knowledge of Local Providers and Plans: a local, independent agent, will have a good understanding of the insurance companies, healthcare providers & networks in the area and can help you find coverage that include your preferred doctors and hospitals.
• Personalized Service: A good agent is interested in building long term relationships with clients in their area. They will take the time to get to know you and understand your individual healthcare needs in order to help you find the right health plan for your lifestyle.
• Annual Plan Review: If you have a Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plan with a Supplement (Medigap) plan you will need to review your plan annually, in the October – December timeframe, to ensure your plan is still a good fit in the new year. A review of the plan network, costs & coverage changes, as well as anticipated healthcare needs are just a few things an agent will review with you each year to determine your coverage needs are met.

Work with an independent agent that represents (at a minimum) at least 3 carriers in your area. That agent is able to compare those plans to each other and in theory has no financial incentive to market one of those plans over another.
Questions I would ask any agent before agreeing to work with them:
1 - How many carriers offered in my zip code do you represent? (minimum 3)
2 - Do you represent both Medicare Supplement and also Medicare Advantage plans? (the impartial agent will offer both as options)
3 - How many years have you been certified to market Medicare plans? (the experienced agent will have at least 3 years experience or will be working with a mentor who has at least 5)
4 - If I have an issue and you are on vacation, who do I call? (the well-prepared agent will have an office staff to assist you when they are unavailable).

1. All Medicare health insurance plans (Part C aka Medicare Advantage)and Medicare Supplement Plans (that work only with Original medicare Parts A&B) have rates either filed with the state or approved by CMS (Medicare). So by utilizing a professional, licensed insurance broker you gain the knowledge he or she possesses about medicare and the cost will be no more than if you called some ubiquitous person on an 800 number or enrolled yourself on-line. You benefit by having a professional relationship, now and in the future.
2. Any Licensed Health Insurance Agent is able to sell you a MediGap or Medicare Supplement plan for original medicare beneficiaries.
3. Only Appointed and Certified Licensed Agents/Brokers may discuss and offer to you one of the many Medicare Part C Plans or Advantage Plans. As example, there are “82” different plans (HMO, PPO, PFFS) just in Manatee County , FL. They are offered by 13 different companies with names like Humana, United Healthcare AARP, Cigna, Aetna, Freedom, etc.. How is the average person supposed to now where to start figuring out which plan is best for them or spouse? By utilizing an independent Broker who is “Certified” with multiple company’s plans, you will get a professional analysis and exposure to many plans you may not have known existed and how to qualify for them. Names like D-SNP, C-SNP, I-SNP are available in most counties.
A D-SNP is for folks that have both Medicare and Medicaid and coordinates the benefits.
A C-SNP is for people with specific diseases like heart, lung and diabetes, etc.
The I-SNP for institutionalized beneficiaries
4. The choice should be an “Independent Insurance Broker” who will represent you to the insurance company. A “captive” or “Employed” Agent may only offer you “The Company Plans”. The independent Broker is special trained to find your needs and prescribe the best plan “This year and next.

However, Medicare is not a one shoe fits all, and is different for each individual. Working with a Medicare agent helps take the confusion out of choosing the right coverage. Medicare has many parts and plan options, and it can be difficult to know which one truly fits your needs.
An agent can explain your choices in simple terms, compare plans based on your doctors, prescriptions, and budget, and help you avoid costly mistakes. They also stay up to date on plan changes and can review your coverage each year to make sure it continues to meet your needs.
Best of all, their help comes at no additional cost to you, making it a valuable resource as you navigate your Medicare options.

A good Medicare agent:
Explains Medicare in plain language, so you’re never left guessing
Reviews your doctors and prescriptions to make sure your plan truly fits your medical needs
Checks for changes every year, because Medicare plans can change benefits, costs, and provider networks
Helps you avoid costly mistakes, such as penalties, uncovered medications, or losing access to doctors you trust
Stays available after enrollment, so you have someone to call when questions or problems come up
Most importantly, working with a Medicare agent costs you nothing extra. The plans cost the same whether you enroll on your own or with help—but with an agent, you gain experience, guidance, and ongoing support.
For many seniors, having a trusted Medicare agent means peace of mind—knowing someone is watching out for their healthcare needs year after year.

That’s where working with a Medicare agent really helps.
Over the years, I’ve found that no two clients are the same. Some want the most predictable coverage possible. Others are more focused on keeping premiums down. Some travel, some don’t. Some take very few prescriptions, others have several. There’s no “best plan”—only the plan that fits your situation.
One of the biggest advantages of working with an independent agent is having options. We’re able to look at multiple companies and compare what’s available, instead of being limited to just one. That alone can make a big difference in both cost and coverage.
Another thing people don’t always see right away is how important timing is. There are certain windows where switching plans is easier, and other times where health questions come into play. Making the wrong move—or waiting too long—can limit your options later on.
And just as important, this isn’t a one-time decision. Plans change. Rates go up. Drug coverage changes. Doctors come in and out of networks. It helps to have someone you can call when those things happen, instead of trying to figure it out on your own each time.
In most cases, there’s no additional cost to work with an agent. The goal is simply to help you understand your options and make a decision you feel good about—not just today, but down the road as well.
At the end of the day, it’s about having someone you trust to walk you through it and be there when you need help.

The reason you want to work with an agent/broker is because we see things that you don’t. And what I mean by that is that we are trained to know the nuances of coverage and how everything interacts together. We also know exactly what to look for when there are specific needs and concerns that have to be accounted for. People can spend hours upon hours on the internet doing their own “research”, and they’re welcome to do so, but we can streamline that and have a proper solution in a small fraction of the time. Additionally, when you have questions or concerns, you have a consistent point of contact instead of a random customer service person that may or may not know how to help you.

Not all Medicare agents are the same though so as you look for an agent, look for one who will educate you on different types of Medicare plans, some will steer you in one direction or another without asking what's important to you.
A good agent will guide you through the process, help advocate for you when issues arise, and you have a go-to person who can answer questions about your plan vs you calling 1-800 transfer me around multiple times, put me on hold forever, then drop the call where I have to start all over again - believe me, it happens to us as agents too and if we can help alleviate that for you, then so much the better. And with companies replacing people with AI and calling the government for answers, that in and of itself is reason enough.
Plus there is no difference in what you are paying in premium for whatever plan you decide to go with as agents get paid by the insurance company you enroll in. You do not pay an extra fee to work with an agent.
That's just a few high-level points.

They compare Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug plans, ensuring you get the best value for your money. They compare costs, networks, and drug coverage to avoid overpaying.
The best part? You don’t pay the agent directly. They’re compensated by the insurance companies if you enroll through them. Your premium remains the same regardless of whether you sign up yourself or through an agent.
Additionally, agents help you find compatible doctors and medications. They check if your doctors are in-network and if your medications are on the formulary, which can save you significant headaches.
Ongoing support is another benefit. If you encounter billing issues, claim denials, or want to switch plans during Annual Enrollment (October 15 to December 7), your agent can assist you. This means you don’t have to deal with Medicare or the insurance company alone.

When you are overwhelmed by all of the choices and the noise around your benefit options (traditional Medicare, Medicare Supplement, Prescription Drug Plans, and Medicare Advantage) and the extra benefits on top of traditional Medicare, an agent can simplify it and highlight the key differences between each option, the pros and cons with each option, and help you as the beneficiary make an informed decision.

Working with a Medicare agent also means you have ongoing support, not just at enrollment. If your needs change, premiums increase, or you receive confusing mail , your agent is there to help you navigate it all—at no additional cost to you. Simply put, a Medicare agent saves you time, reduces stress, and helps you make confident, informed decisions about your healthcare.
Pro Tip: Working with a local, independent Medicare agent is especially valuable. An independent agent is not tied to just one insurance company, which means you receive plan recommendations that are truly in your best interest. A local agent also understands the plans, networks, and providers available in your area and is someone you can build a long-term relationship with.

2. We do the comparing for you. There are dozens of Medicare Advantage, Supplement, and Part D drug plans available in your area. A good agent knows the differences, the networks, the drug formularies, and the fine print — so you don't have to spend hours figuring it out yourself.
3. Your needs change — we change with you. Every year during Annual Enrollment (October 15 – December 7), your plan can be reviewed and updated. A good agent reaches out proactively to make sure you're still in the best plan for your situation.
4. You get a real local person, not a call center!

Why should you work with an AGENT?
* An Agent will review & compare all plans in your area
* An Agent will check to make sure your Doctors are all in network
* An Agent will review all your prescriptions and drug costs
* An Agent will make sure you don't miss a deadline & avoid a penalty
* It costs the beneficiary NOTHING to work with an AGENT.
* An AGENT will be your ADVOCATE!!!! ( My personal FAVORITE )
* Working with an AGENT gives you a peace of mind!

Medicare is not one-size-fits-all
Original Medicare, Medigap, Part D, Medicare Advantage… each has different rules, costs, and trade-offs. An agent helps match your doctors, meds, budget, and lifestyle to the right setup instead of guessing.
They help you avoid expensive mistakes
Choosing the wrong plan can mean:
Doctors suddenly being out of network
Medications not being covered
Surprise bills
Late enrollment penalties that last forever
Agents know the traps and help you dodge them.
Most Medicare agents are paid by insurance companies, not by you.
They advocate for you after enrollment
This one’s huge and often overlooked.
A good agent helps when:
A claim is denied
A drug gets dropped from the formulary
Your doctors change
Your plan changes benefits next year

An agent can also save you time by comparing multiple plans across different carriers, explaining the differences in coverage, costs, and provider networks, and helping you avoid common mistakes—like missing enrollment deadlines or choosing a plan that doesn’t cover your prescriptions or doctors.
Additionally, a Medicare agent provides ongoing support even after you enroll. As your healthcare needs change, they can help you review your coverage each year, ensure you’re still in the right plan, and assist with any questions or issues that come up.
Best of all, working with a Medicare agent typically comes at no direct cost to you, making it a valuable resource for both guidance and peace of mind.

Most people don’t realize how many decisions they’re expected to make on their own at 65. Having someone who can explain things in plain language, look at your doctors and prescriptions, and help you avoid surprises makes the whole process feel a lot less overwhelming. It’s really about having someone who advocates for you, year after year.

• Medicare has many options — Original Medicare, Medigap, Advantage plans, and drug plans. You'll get help with comparisons and find what fits your needs.
• Agents review your providers, prescriptions, finances, and health needs to recommend plans suited to your personal needs.
• They help you avoid missed deadlines, penalties, and coverage gaps.
• Independent agents have access to plans from a variety of insurers, not just one.
• You’ll want ongoing support for questions, claims, plan changes, and annual reviews — even after you enroll — again, at no cost to you.

Don't cut your own hair, don't do your own taxes, and don't do your own health and life insurance policies could be added to the list.
Sure, there are exceptions, but for the most part, let a professional do their job because they are experts and will make sure you get the best outcome possible.
Unlike a barber or tax pro, where at worst you lose a few hundred buck or don't leave your house for a few days, mistakes with your Medicare could be significant.
The best argument to use a Medicare Agent, is the fact that it does not cost you anything extra. In fact, you are essentially paying for them whether you use them or not, so you lose value when you choose to DIY.
I always tell people to shop brokers, not plans. I would speak with 2–3 brokers to get their recommendations. Not all brokers are equal, some may be more experienced, offer more plans or just match your personality better.
Also note, you want a broker, not an agent. Agents represent one company, brokers represent many. Your broker should help you compare options so you are getting the best coverage for the best cost.

Independent Agents go through continuous training all year long. We see the carriers that have great (and poor) customer service, low rate increases (and the opposite), and we have experience with specific underwriting guidelines for each carrier. We know this industry and the ever-changing rules/compliance.
Because we work with multiple carriers, our focus isn’t on one company, it’s on you! Our job is to look out for your best interests, educate you to make informed decisions, and ensure you have the most coverage at the lowest price.

The choices you make when you start Medicare will determine which doctors you'll be allowed to see, how freely you'll be able to travel, which hospitals and other providers will be available when you need care, and how well your retirement income will be protected when a serious health scare happens.
A good advisor takes the time to get to know you, and they will guide you through the process step-by-step, based on your doctors and prescriptions, your lifestyle and goals, and your level of risk and exposure.
One thing a lot of folks don't realize is that working with a Medicare advisor doesn't cost you anything extra. The plans cost the same whether you sign up on your own, or with help. The difference is, with a good, trusted advisor, you're not navigating it alone, and you've got someone in your corner for the long haul.

First, working with an independent insurance broker who is contracted with multiple companies allows me to compare several plan options at once. Instead of you calling each insurance company for quotes, I do that work for you.
Second, Medicare is extremely confusing. I haven’t met a single beneficiary who didn’t benefit from professional guidance when navigating enrollment, plan options, and coverage rules.
Third, and most importantly, working with a Medicare agent doesn’t cost you a thing. In fact, not using an agent can end up being far more expensive. You could pay more for prescriptions, miss important coverage details, or enroll in a plan with subpar benefits that doesn’t truly meet your needs. -Ryan Dawson -Contact me.

However, let's say someone turning 65 or over 65 planning to retire soon does their research, knows when and how to enroll in Parts A and B and knows the types of carrier Medicare plans available. I would ask yourself the following:
1. Think of the most important and most costly health service you have utilized in the last 2 years. This could be a brand-name prescription, a knee replacement, Durable Medical Equipment, regular physical therapy visits or many others.
2. Which type of Medicare plans covers that type of service best? For that plan type, which plan with which carrier covers that type of service best?
If you cannot answer those questions, a Medicare agent can.
There is no difference in the plans or costs whether you set things up yourself or with an agent.

1. Personalized Guidance
An agent helps match your healthcare needs, medications, and budget to the right Medicare plan—whether it’s Original Medicare, Medigap, or Medicare Advantage.
2. Access to Multiple Plans
Independent agents represent multiple carriers, giving you a broader view of available options—not just one company’s offerings.
3. Cost Doesn’t Increase
There’s no extra cost to you—agents are compensated by the insurance companies, not by you, and your premium stays the same whether you enroll on your own or through an agent.
4. Help with Enrollment
Agents handle paperwork, explain timelines, and help avoid common enrollment mistakes that could result in penalties or gaps in coverage.
5. Ongoing Support
A good agent offers ongoing assistance—helping with plan reviews during Annual Enrollment, claim issues, or provider network changes.

Lastly, using a local broker has added benefits of high expertise in the plans available in your area. While a licensed agent servicing plans nation-wide may have access to all the information, someone who services a local community will have in-depth knowledge of local networks and comparison to other plans on the area.

Explains your options – Medicare can be confusing, with Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Part D, and supplement plans. A broker makes the differences clear.
Shops all carriers – Instead of calling each insurance company yourself, a broker compares plans from multiple carriers to find one that fits your needs and budget.
Personalized guidance – A broker helps you match your doctors, prescriptions, and health priorities with the right plan.
Year-round support – Beyond enrollment, a broker is there to help with claims, billing questions, or coverage changes.
No cost to you – Brokers are paid by the insurance companies, so their services come at no additional cost.

She now pays $216/ month on Plan G. The difference in premium more than covers the Part B deductible and still saves her almost $1000 / year. Medicare Advantage plans work similarly. Finding the right plan and making the right choice is extremely important and partnering with an agent that has your best interest at heart means the world to people.

The other aspect to it is that a plan which works perfectly for your neighbor or even a spouse may be completely wrong for you. Your lifestyle, doctors, your prescriptions, your budget are all unique and your coverage should reflect that.
As an independent broker, I'm not tied to any single carrier. I take the time to understand your specific situation and shop across multiple plans to find the right fit for you!!

Medicare plans can be confusing, and many people don’t realize that plans, costs, provider networks, and prescription coverage can change from year to year. An agent can help you compare plans, explain benefits in simple terms, and help you find coverage that fits your personal healthcare needs and budget.
I also believe it’s important to have someone you can actually call when questions come up — whether that’s understanding a bill, reviewing prescription costs, checking if your doctors are in-network, or simply reviewing your coverage each year to make sure it still fits your needs.
As an independent agent, I work with multiple carriers, so my goal is to help educate you on your options and help you feel confident and comfortable with your Medicare decisions — not just during enrollment, but as an ongoing resource moving forward.

An Independent Medicare Agent should work more as an "advisor" rather than a "sales person". Be sure to ask how many carriers they are appointed with and if they use actuarial tools so that they can compare all of your options, not just one or two carriers' plans.
An independent agent / advisor should keep you informed; advise you of the best coverage for YOU, and support you throughout the year.

Free Consultation: Independent agents are compensated directly by the insurance companies through standard commissions.
No Added Fees: Your monthly plan premiums will be exactly the same whether you sign up through an agent or try to enroll yourself directly through the government.
2. Lifetime Advocacy and Support
Annual Rate Audits: Insurance companies change their co-pays, premiums, and drug formularies every single year.
Your agent reviews your plan every autumn during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) to see if you can save money by switching. Billing & Claims Help: If a claim gets denied or an insurance company makes an error, your agent acts as your personal advocate to fight the carrier on your behalf.
