Q&A with Jonathan Tate

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: Unbiased information is crutial to make any informed decision, but that information is particularly difficult to obtain when it relates to your Medicare coverage. Shopping tools such as Medicare.gov can be a good place to start, but those tools are based on algorithms designed to give general information to masses of people. You can call each carrier, but they can only discuss their own plans. They are not able to compare themselves to each other.

Work with an independent agent that represents (at a minimum) at least 3 carriers in your area. That agent is able to compare those plans to each other and in theory has no financial incentive to market one of those plans over another.

Questions I would ask any agent before agreeing to work with them:

1 - How many carriers offered in my zip code do you represent? (minimum 3)

2 - Do you represent both Medicare Supplement and also Medicare Advantage plans? (the impartial agent will offer both as options)

3 - How many years have you been certified to market Medicare plans? (the experienced agent will have at least 3 years experience or will be working with a mentor who has at least 5)

4 - If I have an issue and you are on vacation, who do I call? (the well-prepared agent will have an office staff to assist you when they are unavailable).
