According to the U.S. government, once a person turns 65, the average cost of their healthcare for the rest of their life is about $375,000. Because of this high cost, the government looks for ways to spend less money.

One way they do this is by allowing private insurance companies—such as Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Humana, Freedom, and others—to offer Medicare Advantage plans. These companies advertise heavily, often promising “extra benefits” or “free” items to get seniors to sign up.

When a senior enrolls in a Medicare Advantage plan, the government pays the insurance company about $13,000 to $15,000 each year for that person. This is instead of the government paying for care directly through Original Medicare.

If the average person lives to about age 80, the government can save roughly $150,000 per person when that person is in a Medicare Advantage plan.

Because Medicare Advantage plans are run by private insurance companies, they usually:

*Limit which doctors and hospitals you can use

*Require approval before certain tests, treatments, or surgeries

*May ask you to try cheaper treatments first

These rules help the insurance company save money—but they may also affect your choices and access to care.

It’s important to understand that these plans are designed to control costs, not necessarily to provide more care.

Before choosing a plan, ask yourself:

Do I want an insurance company deciding which doctors I can see?

Do I want an insurer approving or denying my treatments?

Your health decisions are personal and important.

Take your time, ask questions, and choose wisely.

There are two categories to consider: the U.S. spends an average of $12,000 per person, per year on those under Medicare A & B with a Medigap plan. This amount is less than the payout for Medicare Advantage customers in 2023.

In 2023, the U.S. spent a total of $839 billion, and is projected to increase to over 1.6 trillion by 2023.

Yeah, it’s crazy—last year we spent around $4.9 trillion on healthcare in the U.S. That’s about $14,570 for every person. And even with all that money being thrown around, folks are still having a hard time getting the care they need. Just doesn’t add up, does it?

Healthcare represents 17.6% GDP (gross domestic product) which represents the percentage of the total US economy. These statistics available are from 2023 with anticipated or projected increases.

Medicare spending represents the single largest component of government healthcare expenditure, with Medicare spending growing 8.1% to $1,029.8 billion in 2023, representing 21 percent of total National Health Expenditures. This substantial growth reflects both demographic shifts toward an aging population and increased utilization of medical services among Medicare beneficiaries. The program’s expansion demonstrates the federal government’s commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare coverage for seniors and disabled Americans.

In 2023 $4.9 Trillion was spent for healthcare (7.5% increase over 2022) with $14,570 per person (per capita) spent for each individual. Let's break that HUGE number down even more:

Medicare Spending (2023) | $1.03 Trillion | 8.1% annual growth

Medicaid Spending (2023) | $871.7 Billion | 7.9% annual growth

Private Insurance Spending (2023) | $1.46 Trillion | 11.5% annual growth

Hospital Expenditures (2023) | $1.52 Trillion | 10.4% annual growth

Prescription Drug Spending (2023) | $449.7 Billion | 11.4% annual growth

Sources like CMS.gov indicate that approximately 4.9 trillion dollars were spent in the US in 2023 on healthcare. Averaging over $14,000 per person. That's a lot. It is not that each individual paid that, but an average. Still, a staggering amount. All the more reason to review your plan of coverage options each year to ensure not only that you are getting the most but saving the most on your plan. What value does your plan bring to the table?
