What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?
Answered by 613 licensed agents
A lot of people coming into Medicare are overwhelmed. They’re confused, stressed out, and not really sure who to trust. And I understand why. There’s so much information out there, so many commercials, so many opinions from friends and neighbors, and unfortunately a lot of misinformation too. Medicare has become a huge business, and too many people end up feeling like just another number.
What I’ve learned over the years is that most people aren’t really looking for a “salesperson.” They’re looking for someone they can trust. Someone local. Someone who’s going to slow things down, explain things clearly, answer the phone when they call, and actually care about helping them make the right decision.
That’s the kind of relationship I try to build with every client.
I also genuinely enjoy meeting people from all different backgrounds and hearing their stories. No two conversations are ever the same. Everybody’s situation is different, and after all these years, I still enjoy sitting down with someone and helping them figure it all out.
And honestly, there’s a really good feeling that comes from helping someone go from stressed and overwhelmed… to relieved and confident. Sometimes it’s helping them save money. Sometimes it’s helping them avoid a costly mistake. Sometimes it’s just giving them peace of mind and making this whole Medicare transition feel a little less scary.
That part never gets old to me.
Eighteen years later, I still take a lot of pride in what I do, and I still feel grateful that people trust me to help guide them through something this important.

A lot of folks come to me feeling confused or even stressed out. There’s so much information out there, and half of it feels contradictory. I enjoy sitting down, breaking it down in plain English, and watching that stress turn into clarity. When someone says, “Okay, that finally makes sense,” that’s a good feeling.
I also like that this isn’t a one and done type of job. These are real relationships. I talk to my clients every year, sometimes multiple times a year. I’m there when they retire, when they move, when a spouse passes, or when their health situation changes. It’s meaningful work.
And to be real, I take pride in helping people avoid costly mistakes penalties, wrong plan choices, missed deadlines. A small decision at 65 can impact someone for the rest of their life. If I can help them get it right the first time, that matters to me.
At the end of the day, it’s about trust. People are trusting me with their healthcare decisions that’s something I don’t take lightly.

For me, the best part is when someone says:
“Thank you — I actually understand this now.”
Or when I hear:
“I feel so much better knowing I’m on the right plan.”
This work is personal. It’s not just enrolling someone in a plan — it’s helping them protect their health, their budget, and their peace of mind. I get to build real relationships, often with families I’ve known for years, and that’s something I’m truly grateful for.
At the end of the day, what I like most is simple:
I get to help people during one of the most important transitions of their life, and I get to make it easier.

Beyond the professional aspect, it’s also personal for me. Being from the Upstate South Carolina community, I love building relationships with local families and seniors, treating each client with the same respect and hospitality that shaped my upbringing and education. Working under Kim Fisher’s mentorship at Secure Financial Solutions has shown me the value of combining compassion with expertise — not just helping clients choose the right Medicare plan, but showing them that we’re here for the long term, as trusted guides through every stage of their retirement journey.

I also value the relationships I build. Many of my clients become like friends or family, and I get to support them year after year as their needs change. It’s rewarding to know that I’m not just selling a plan; I’m giving someone guidance, reassurance, and ongoing support they can count on.

One of the main reasons I love being a Medicare agent is that I get to help people during some of the most stressful and vulnerable times in their lives. Every day, I meet people who are not only navigating complex healthcare decisions but are also concerned about how to afford the care they need. As a Medicare agent, I get to offer clarity and reassurance, guiding clients toward coverage options that fit their unique circumstances. I help them decide w/o regrets because I educate them, so they can make an informed decision.
With approximately 10,000 Americans turning 65 every day, the demand for Medicare guidance continues to grow steadily, ensuring a robust client base and job stability well into the future. This steady influx of new clients, coupled with the ability to build long-lasting relationships as people live longer, allows me to help more people while also growing my business. The role offers flexibility, independence, and a chance to become a trusted advisor in my community. As I grow my team, I will train them just like me, to take an educational approach. I’m also a second-generation medicare agent of 43 years —a combination that makes being a Medicare agent both a stable career choice and a personally meaningful vocation.

Over time, I changed my career path from the property and casualty insurance so I could learn the intricacies of Medicare and be able to assist more of my family. Little did I know at the time that I would eventually leave as a captive agent and branch out as an independent agent with my own business.
As I grew more experienced in this field, my passion for helping others only deepened as I continued within the industry. I provided assistance to insurance carriers within the industry to help facilitate more options for Medicare beneficiaries within the market.
Unfortunately, I also witnessed firsthand how some agents exploited seniors, even going so far as to use my business name unethically to boost their commissions. These experiences only strengthened my resolve to operate with integrity and advocate fiercely for those I serve.
Being an independent broker allows me the freedom to get to know my customers, understand their unique needs and provide appropriate solutions tailored to their needs. I am intentional in picking up as many contracts as possible with insurance carriers to facilitate those needs. I receive a lot of referrals because my clients know that I am one who can be trusted. I operate with integrity to the extent that I will enroll clients in products that may not offer commissions. I started with my family. Now, I am here for yours!

Take for instance dental implants. Most Medicare Advantage plans include dental coverage, but don't cover implants. With that knowledge, I may suggest a Medicare Advantage plan that includes a Part B giveback, and then take that giveback and buy a dental plan that helps cover those implants. Then when they get those implants done, we can cancel the dental policy and move them to a different Medicare Advantage plan if they would like. It's so important to have seniors on the best coverage for themselves each year. And each year can change.

What I like about being a Medicare licensed agent is I truly love what I do. My purpose is to help educate and inform people about health care and understanding individuals' needs and wants when it comes to their health care. It's important for people to be able to make informed decisions, particularly when it comes to Medicare and how confusing Medicare can be. But if you work with a licensed agent, they can actually guide you through it. I take great pride in helping people make informed decisions about their care. Not only today, but where your health is gonna be in the future. Because whatever decisions you're making today can have an impact on you in the future.
To me, it's about the relationship I have with my clients that helps me get through this. I say if I'm digging ditches and climbing roofs at 72 years old, I'm not gonna be able to do that. But my heart and passion is helping people understand our health care system, which I've been doing for 23 years, and I truly love what I do.
So when it comes down to helping people navigate through our health care system, whether that's Medicare or any health plan, it's about understanding what people's needs are, not only today, but what our future needs are. So for me, I'm truly honored to be able to help folks make informed decisions when it comes to their health care.

I love the relationships. These aren’t just clients to me. They become friends, family, people who trust me with something that really matters. And I don’t take that lightly.
I love knowing I’m making a real difference in my community. It’s not about pushing policies. It’s about protecting people, caring for families, and making sure folks feel seen, heard, and taken care of.
And I love the challenge. Medicare is always changing, and that keeps me sharp. It pushes me to grow, to keep learning, and to lead my team the right way.
This isn’t just a job. This is my purpose.

Medicare decisions often happen at stressful times—retirement, health changes, caregiving—and being able to simplify the options, prevent costly mistakes, and help someone feel confident instead of overwhelmed is incredibly rewarding.
It’s especially meaningful knowing that the guidance doesn’t end at enrollment—I can keep helping as needs change.

So many people aren't aware of basic protections that have time limits -- such as guaranteed issue for Medicare supplement policies. You can't be turned down! Trial rights are another, you have options you can take advantage of to get a secure policy in your life -- for life. These are protections they worked hard to achieve and I love giving them the information needed to make a great decision.
And it's wonderful to see how a policy can be a trusted asset when things, inevitably, go wrong. The bumps and bruises don't hurt as much when my clients get the care they need from trusted healthcare providers they choose.

One of my most memorable moments was when I assisted a client overwhelmed by their Medicare plan's complexities.
After patiently guiding them through their choices, they expressed immense gratitude for the clarity and support I provided.
Knowing that I can make a significant difference in someone’s life—especially for those who may feel lost in the system—is what I love most about this role.
It’s not just about selling insurance; it’s about empowering Medicare beneficiaries to make informed decisions that enhance their quality of life.

I especially enjoy the challenging cases — when someone feels stuck, overwhelmed, or told “there’s no good option.” That’s where I thrive: digging deep, asking the right questions, and finding solutions others miss.
More than anything, I like knowing I’ve brought peace of mind. Medicare can feel like a maze, but my clients know they have a guide who’ll walk with them, not just hand them a map and disappear.

The people I work with are able to understand their options, including potential pros and cons of each, and make a choice that they feel good about - it's great to be a part of that.
I also enjoy getting to know people and their stories - each of us has a life story, and not only might that life story inform a person's choice when it comes to Medicare coverage options, but that life story is really interesting to me and adds an enjoyable layer to my relationships with my people (I have a hard time calling them clients : ) )

Hi, thanks for watching. So, kind of a weird question, but they're asking, "What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?" I'm actually a Medicare broker, and that means I'm an independent broker. I don't work for any insurance companies, but I represent a lot of them here in the Phoenix area. The biggest benefit to being a broker is that I can help people cut through all the confusion and understand, as best they can, their Medicare coverage. Honestly, there's a lot of shady agents out there, so you have to really, like they say, choose wisely. Do your homework on people. Figure out what they're all about. If they do other lines of insurance, maybe they're not an expert in Medicare. Because as we all know, you can't be an expert at everything. It took me a long time to understand all this and to really get good at it, and that's all Sue and I do, is Medicare.

I work primarily in the senior space; over seeing a provider group, my wife and I own Red Mountain Funeral Home in Mesa AZ and having an insurance agency Speros Financial Group. The combination of these allows us the opportunity to help more people than ever expected.
Medicare has all kinds of options for folks to pick from, being able to spend time with folks and really find out what they need out of their Medicare plan no matter if I get paid or not. Knowing at the end of the day I truly helped someone out, find something that best suits their needs.
Makes it all worth it in the long run and keeps me going day to day. Hearing... Thank you :)
