What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answered by 613 licensed agents

Honestly, what I love most about this business is pretty simple — I get to help people every single day who genuinely need help.

A lot of people coming into Medicare are overwhelmed. They’re confused, stressed out, and not really sure who to trust. And I understand why. There’s so much information out there, so many commercials, so many opinions from friends and neighbors, and unfortunately a lot of misinformation too. Medicare has become a huge business, and too many people end up feeling like just another number.

What I’ve learned over the years is that most people aren’t really looking for a “salesperson.” They’re looking for someone they can trust. Someone local. Someone who’s going to slow things down, explain things clearly, answer the phone when they call, and actually care about helping them make the right decision.

That’s the kind of relationship I try to build with every client.

I also genuinely enjoy meeting people from all different backgrounds and hearing their stories. No two conversations are ever the same. Everybody’s situation is different, and after all these years, I still enjoy sitting down with someone and helping them figure it all out.

And honestly, there’s a really good feeling that comes from helping someone go from stressed and overwhelmed… to relieved and confident. Sometimes it’s helping them save money. Sometimes it’s helping them avoid a costly mistake. Sometimes it’s just giving them peace of mind and making this whole Medicare transition feel a little less scary.

That part never gets old to me.

Eighteen years later, I still take a lot of pride in what I do, and I still feel grateful that people trust me to help guide them through something this important.

What I like most about being a Medicare agent is honestly the people.

A lot of folks come to me feeling confused or even stressed out. There’s so much information out there, and half of it feels contradictory. I enjoy sitting down, breaking it down in plain English, and watching that stress turn into clarity. When someone says, “Okay, that finally makes sense,” that’s a good feeling.

I also like that this isn’t a one and done type of job. These are real relationships. I talk to my clients every year, sometimes multiple times a year. I’m there when they retire, when they move, when a spouse passes, or when their health situation changes. It’s meaningful work.

And to be real, I take pride in helping people avoid costly mistakes penalties, wrong plan choices, missed deadlines. A small decision at 65 can impact someone for the rest of their life. If I can help them get it right the first time, that matters to me.

At the end of the day, it’s about trust. People are trusting me with their healthcare decisions that’s something I don’t take lightly.

What I enjoy most about being a Medicare agent is helping people feel relieved instead of overwhelmed. Medicare can be confusing, the rules change every year, and it’s easy to make a decision that affects your health and wallet without even realizing it. I love being the person who can sit down, simplify everything, and give you honest guidance you can trust.

For me, the best part is when someone says:

“Thank you — I actually understand this now.”

Or when I hear:

“I feel so much better knowing I’m on the right plan.”

This work is personal. It’s not just enrolling someone in a plan — it’s helping them protect their health, their budget, and their peace of mind. I get to build real relationships, often with families I’ve known for years, and that’s something I’m truly grateful for.

At the end of the day, what I like most is simple:

I get to help people during one of the most important transitions of their life, and I get to make it easier.

What I like most about being a Medicare agent is the opportunity to truly make a difference in people’s lives at a time when they need guidance the most. Many individuals feel overwhelmed by the complexity of Medicare — from comparing Advantage and Supplement plans to understanding prescription coverage and upcoming cost changes — and I take pride in helping them make confident, informed decisions. There’s a real satisfaction in sitting down with someone, explaining their options in plain language, and knowing that by the end of our conversation, they feel secure, supported, and often relieved.

Beyond the professional aspect, it’s also personal for me. Being from the Upstate South Carolina community, I love building relationships with local families and seniors, treating each client with the same respect and hospitality that shaped my upbringing and education. Working under Kim Fisher’s mentorship at Secure Financial Solutions has shown me the value of combining compassion with expertise — not just helping clients choose the right Medicare plan, but showing them that we’re here for the long term, as trusted guides through every stage of their retirement journey.

What I like most about being a Medicare agent is that it gives me the chance to truly help people during an important and sometimes overwhelming stage of life. Medicare can be confusing, with so many rules, deadlines, and plan choices, and I love being able to take that stress off someone’s shoulders by explaining things in a way that makes sense. Every person’s situation is unique—their doctors, medications, health needs, and budget are all different—so I enjoy finding the plan that really “fits” them and gives them peace of mind.

I also value the relationships I build. Many of my clients become like friends or family, and I get to support them year after year as their needs change. It’s rewarding to know that I’m not just selling a plan; I’m giving someone guidance, reassurance, and ongoing support they can count on.

My passion around Medicare started when my parent's turned 65. And to this day, every client gets the "mom test" (ie. Would I make the same recommendation to my own mom?). I love helping people understand the unnecessarily overly complex structure of Medicare in ways that are easy to understand. In this complexity, unfortunately many people don't realize some of the opportunities and pitfalls that come along with Medicare, and I love being able to help them make notice. Consider me a nerd who loves to read contracts, but I do this to help ensure folks buy what they want and need, and to make sure they actually buy what they thought they were buying. As the old adage says, "Do the right thing and the money will follow".

Why I Like Being a Medicare Agent

One of the main reasons I love being a Medicare agent is that I get to help people during some of the most stressful and vulnerable times in their lives. Every day, I meet people who are not only navigating complex healthcare decisions but are also concerned about how to afford the care they need. As a Medicare agent, I get to offer clarity and reassurance, guiding clients toward coverage options that fit their unique circumstances. I help them decide w/o regrets because I educate them, so they can make an informed decision.

With approximately 10,000 Americans turning 65 every day, the demand for Medicare guidance continues to grow steadily, ensuring a robust client base and job stability well into the future. This steady influx of new clients, coupled with the ability to build long-lasting relationships as people live longer, allows me to help more people while also growing my business. The role offers flexibility, independence, and a chance to become a trusted advisor in my community. As I grow my team, I will train them just like me, to take an educational approach. I’m also a second-generation medicare agent of 43 years —a combination that makes being a Medicare agent both a stable career choice and a personally meaningful vocation.

The most enjoyable thing about being in the Medicare advisory industry is being a helper. When I meet with beneficiaries my goal, every time, is to treat them the same way I treat my grandparents. Honesty, building relationships, and transparency are the 3 major factors for me when meeting with beneficiaries. I do not want to make a sale; I want to create a relationship and build trust. I have open communication with all of my members, some don't call or text me as much as others, but it is very important to me that every person that I help enroll in any Medicare product knows that I am available to them as often as needed, which has been extremely beneficial in my 7-year career.

I chose to become an Independent Medicare Agent because I wanted to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Medicare beneficiaries. My journey began with a deeply personal motivation. It began helping my parents as they navigated the complex Medicare system while supporting my grandparents.

Over time, I changed my career path from the property and casualty insurance so I could learn the intricacies of Medicare and be able to assist more of my family. Little did I know at the time that I would eventually leave as a captive agent and branch out as an independent agent with my own business.

As I grew more experienced in this field, my passion for helping others only deepened as I continued within the industry. I provided assistance to insurance carriers within the industry to help facilitate more options for Medicare beneficiaries within the market.

Unfortunately, I also witnessed firsthand how some agents exploited seniors, even going so far as to use my business name unethically to boost their commissions. These experiences only strengthened my resolve to operate with integrity and advocate fiercely for those I serve.

Being an independent broker allows me the freedom to get to know my customers, understand their unique needs and provide appropriate solutions tailored to their needs. I am intentional in picking up as many contracts as possible with insurance carriers to facilitate those needs. I receive a lot of referrals because my clients know that I am one who can be trusted. I operate with integrity to the extent that I will enroll clients in products that may not offer commissions. I started with my family. Now, I am here for yours!

Medicare is a complex subject. I love being able to break it down into simplified, understandable pieces of information. Taking a client from confusion to clarity and confidence is very rewarding for me. Additionally, I love helping my clients long after the education and policy selection. I am there to help decipher documents, such as explanations of benefits, and assist with prescription drug coverage, costs, and refill processes. I'll take questions from clients and find the answers, so they don't have to spend their time waiting on hold to speak with someone.

I really enjoy talking through everything with my clients. Not just about Medicare, but a retirement picture as a whole in regards to what their health needs are, dental needs, life insurance, cancer, heart attack, stroke etc. to really make sure they have the tailored coverage they need. Knowing what someones needs are, greatly affects the Medicare decisions they make. So it isn't just as simple as signing them up for Medicare.

Take for instance dental implants. Most Medicare Advantage plans include dental coverage, but don't cover implants. With that knowledge, I may suggest a Medicare Advantage plan that includes a Part B giveback, and then take that giveback and buy a dental plan that helps cover those implants. Then when they get those implants done, we can cancel the dental policy and move them to a different Medicare Advantage plan if they would like. It's so important to have seniors on the best coverage for themselves each year. And each year can change.

What I like about being a Medicare licensed agent is I truly love what I do. My purpose is to help educate and inform people about health care and understanding individuals' needs and wants when it comes to their health care. It's important for people to be able to make informed decisions, particularly when it comes to Medicare and how confusing Medicare can be. But if you work with a licensed agent, they can actually guide you through it. I take great pride in helping people make informed decisions about their care. Not only today, but where your health is gonna be in the future. Because whatever decisions you're making today can have an impact on you in the future.

To me, it's about the relationship I have with my clients that helps me get through this. I say if I'm digging ditches and climbing roofs at 72 years old, I'm not gonna be able to do that. But my heart and passion is helping people understand our health care system, which I've been doing for 23 years, and I truly love what I do.

So when it comes down to helping people navigate through our health care system, whether that's Medicare or any health plan, it's about understanding what people's needs are, not only today, but what our future needs are. So for me, I'm truly honored to be able to help folks make informed decisions when it comes to their health care.

The thing I like the most about being a Medicare agent is educating clients on how the program works and how it applies to each individual in a different way. Even though there are some strict rules surrounding Medicare, the large number of products and services available still leave a lot of options for each person. Being able to offer all the products and not being captive to a specific carrier, gives me the ability to focus on the client and not the quota required by an insurance company.

Getting folks off to a good start at 65, or helping them get to the best place possible if they are already on a Medicare plan, fills my current desire to continue to serve others. What I love most about being a Medicare agent is the people. Sitting down with a senior who feels lost or overwhelmed and watching the weight lift off their shoulders when they realize it doesn’t have to be complicated. That moment right there fires me up every single time.

I love the relationships. These aren’t just clients to me. They become friends, family, people who trust me with something that really matters. And I don’t take that lightly.

I love knowing I’m making a real difference in my community. It’s not about pushing policies. It’s about protecting people, caring for families, and making sure folks feel seen, heard, and taken care of.

And I love the challenge. Medicare is always changing, and that keeps me sharp. It pushes me to grow, to keep learning, and to lead my team the right way.

It's a full time job for us, and it shouldn't have to be for beneficiaries. Being helpful, and making sure that they are in the right plan for their health, and their budget is extremely important. Everyone has their own life story, and being able to accommodate to all different unique set of needs is a great feeling. Step 1: What parts of Medicare should you enroll in?

Step 2: If yes, how and when to enroll in Medicare properly.

Step 3: Deciding between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage.

Step 4: Picking an insurance company.

Our customers enjoy our easy 4 step process because it is a pain free experience that results in the proper selection and enrollment into Medicare.

We often think of our major “job description” as “problem solvers.” Most individuals are not clear on what their options are when it comes to Medicare because of the many plans and paths available to them. So when we have the opportunity to really examine what our client’s real situation and needs are, we are able to assist them to find the plan that most appropriately suits them. Whether that would be a Medicare Supplement Plan with/without a Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan or, perhaps, a Special Needs Plan. We have, on many occasions, been able to save our clients money and/or headaches and removed the stress from a complicated process. The relief that our clients feel when we help them to work through this is definitely our favorite part of being a Medicare broker.

Helping seniors cut through the confusion and feel good about the Medicare product they choose!

So many people aren't aware of basic protections that have time limits -- such as guaranteed issue for Medicare supplement policies. You can't be turned down! Trial rights are another, you have options you can take advantage of to get a secure policy in your life -- for life. These are protections they worked hard to achieve and I love giving them the information needed to make a great decision.

And it's wonderful to see how a policy can be a trusted asset when things, inevitably, go wrong. The bumps and bruises don't hurt as much when my clients get the care they need from trusted healthcare providers they choose.

It is really rewarding to help people get comfortable with a confusing topic like Medicare (believe me, virtually everyone I meet that is new to Medicare is confused, at least to some degree), especially since health coverage becomes even more important to us as we get older.

The people I work with are able to understand their options, including potential pros and cons of each, and make a choice that they feel good about - it's great to be a part of that.

I also enjoy getting to know people and their stories - each of us has a life story, and not only might that life story inform a person's choice when it comes to Medicare coverage options, but that life story is really interesting to me and adds an enjoyable layer to my relationships with my people (I have a hard time calling them clients : ) )

I take great pride in assisting individuals in navigating the Medicare process with confidence and clarity, as many individuals feel overwhelmed or confused by their options. I particularly relish the opportunity to reveal benefits that they may not be aware they are eligible for—observing their relief and peace of mind when everything finally makes sense is truly satisfying. Hi, thanks for watching. So, kind of a weird question, but they're asking, "What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?" I'm actually a Medicare broker, and that means I'm an independent broker. I don't work for any insurance companies, but I represent a lot of them here in the Phoenix area. The biggest benefit to being a broker is that I can help people cut through all the confusion and understand, as best they can, their Medicare coverage. Honestly, there's a lot of shady agents out there, so you have to really, like they say, choose wisely. Do your homework on people. Figure out what they're all about. If they do other lines of insurance, maybe they're not an expert in Medicare. Because as we all know, you can't be an expert at everything. It took me a long time to understand all this and to really get good at it, and that's all Sue and I do, is Medicare.

That being said, if there are mid-year or annual changes, our team is just a call away for the ultimate peace of mind during these golden years!

He had been healthy for a few years, just a back injury. He was suddenly diagnosed with cancer and did not qualify for Medicaid because of his income. His cost for treatment became real and he did not have a prescription drug plan. He reached out to me right before the end of AEP and I was able to help him get a plan and he was able to continue his treatment, same doctors and hospital. Knowing I have been of great service to someone, helping them to make the best decision for their health moving forward, is very rewarding internally. So many think they know what is best - a decision that came from their assumptions, falsely fed information by neighbors, or incomplete advertising. Well, they do until you share with them some knowledge that confirms or presents a different thinking that demonstrates they would have chosen incorrectly for themselves. Many do not put enough emphasis on NO UNDERWRITING, and how the wrong decision could change their life in an instant if they chose the wrong plan.

I operate with morals, values, and integrity. I have been hurt by people who sold me based on greed or malicious intent. I never want a client or proposed client to even question that. So as long as I can respect the person in the mirror each day, know that I am doing a needed service for someone with care and sincerity, and provide for my family and future in the process, my satisfaction is fulfilled!

Getting seniors off on the right foot when it comes to making the best decision, as they search to find the plan that suits their coverage needs at a budgetable price. It's also critical for Medicare eligibles to fully understand the pitfalls of Medicare Part C or Medicare Advantage, particularly, if that's their initial choice. At some point down the road, should they wish to switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare Parts A&B and wish to purchase a Medicare Supplement, they may be in for a rude awakening.

Medicare has all kinds of options for folks to pick from, being able to spend time with folks and really find out what they need out of their Medicare plan no matter if I get paid or not. Knowing at the end of the day I truly helped someone out, find something that best suits their needs.
