Q&A with Patrick Lohrey

What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answer: Getting seniors off on the right foot when it comes to making the best decision, as they search to find the plan that suits their coverage needs at a budgetable price. It's also critical for Medicare eligibles to fully understand the pitfalls of Medicare Part C or Medicare Advantage, particularly, if that's their initial choice. At some point down the road, should they wish to switch from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare Parts A&B and wish to purchase a Medicare Supplement, they may be in for a rude awakening.

How can I make sure I'm not overpaying for my Medicare plan, and are there any tools or resources you recommend?

Answer: That's strictly a value judgment. In good conscience, I can't recommend a Medicare Advantage Plan. There are too many variables: prior authorizations, changes in contracts and benefits, doctors leaving, etc. - not to mention all the issues involved with having an insurance company making decisions about your care.

Your best case scenario is to purchase a popular Medicare Supplement, offered by a large, experienced carrier that has plenty of insureds, so you will benefit from the "spread of risk" insurance principle that works so well to keep cost down from year-to-year. Rate increases will be more modest and only doctors will make decisions about your care.

What is Guaranteed Issue for Medicare Supplement plans, and when does it apply?

Answer: Guaranteed Issue Rights apply when you lose your current health benefits - for a number of reasons (for example: Your spouse is still working beyond age 65 and has you on their plan. You have Medicare but missed your "Open Enrollment." You've been using your Medicare to pay deductibles, coinsurance and co-pays you would otherwise pay out-of-pocket. Two years later she decides to retire and you lose spousal coverage under her employer health care benefit.)

Once you qualify for "Guaranteed Issue," you are not required to go through medical underwriting.

My kids keep telling me to get a Medicare Advantage plan, but my friends say stick with Original Medicare. Who should I listen to?

Answer: Listen to your friends. They probably have friends who have experienced many of the pitfalls associated with owning Medicare Advantage. Your kids probably listened to Joe Namath on those phony Medicare Advantage TV adds.

The reality is you don't get health care for free - not even Medicare. If you want narrow provider networks owned by insurance companies, then select Medicare Advantage. If you want roughly 70% of the services you receive, requiring prior authorizations by the insurance company which allows them to respond by saying, "Not medically necessary," then select Medicare Advantage. If you need major surgery and end up spending 5 days in the hospital, which requires you to pay at least $1,500 out-of-pocket, then take Medicare Advantage.

I could go on. So, give me a call to follow up and to help you select a solid Medicare Supplement Plan. You can put an end to the argument and feel good about your choice. My number is 717-968-9300. _Patrick
