Q&A with John Lopez
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: I am licensed with most, if not all of the carriers who write policies in my home state. That allows me to match your needs with the policy that best suits YOU, not me. You can’t get that type of service from an agent who only sells with one or a few companies.
Is Guaranteed Issue available after the Medicare Open Enrollment period ends?
Answer: Guaranteed Issue is available for up to 6 months after your Part B becomes effective, and it doesn't have to coincide with with the Medicare Open Enrollment Period. There are also other situations in which Guaranteed Issue applies, but consult with a local independent health broker to determine if your situation applies.
I've been diagnosed with prediabetes. What preventive services does Medicare cover to help prevent progression to type 2 diabetes?
Answer: The Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program begins with up to 16 weekly group sessions over a 6-month period. You can choose to attend sessions in person, virtually, or both. This is provided as a one-time benefit. Nutrition services (professional) are not provided.
I'm planning to delay Social Security until age 70, but I'm turning 65 soon. How does this affect my Medicare enrollment?
Answer: Assuming you are not working with health coverage available elsewhere, it will not affect your Medicare coverage at all. You will enroll for Medicare Parts A & B through your mySSA account online, and assuming you have premium-free Part A, you will pay your Part B premium directly. Once you do begin collecting Medicare, your Part B premium and part D premium (if you have one) will be deducted automatically from your Social Security check monthly.
What's the biggest frustration Medicare agents have when helping clients enroll?
Answer: If a client has enrolled in Part A at age 65 but delayed Part B coverage until later, the processing of that Part B effective date can be quite time-consuming from the Social Security Administration. After that, obtaining the correct information from clients, like ALL of the medications taken and ALL of the doctors a client may see helps the agent make sure they get the best plan for them if they are considering a Medicare Advantage plan.
What should I do if I find out that my preferred hospital isn't in-network with my Medicare Advantage plan?
Answer: If your preferred hospital drops out of your Medicare Advantage network, you should consult with an independent agent to determine your options. You may have a special enrollment period if you have access to a five-star plan in your area. There may be other options available to you as well. Consult a local independent health agent to get your best option. It's a no-cost appointment for you.
What are the 6 things Medicare doesn't cover?
Answer: Medicare does not cover routine and comprehensive dental care, routine vision care, or routine hearing care. In addition, Medicare does not cover long-term nursing home care, cosmetic surgery, and medical care outside the United States. In addition, prescription drugs are not covered by Parts A and Part B. They are covered by Part D, which require a separate enrollment.
