Q&A with Daniel Greer

What's one Medicare decision that too many people regret later?

Answer: Using a telemarketer that isn't local or that is unknown and (as a bonus) taking advice from someone that isn't a licensed professional, i.e. a friend, neighbor or family member. Everybody has different want, needs, budgets, medications, etc. I strive to find you a plan that fits you like a glove.

I'm living solely on Social Security of $1,400 monthly and can't afford my Medicare premiums and copays. What assistance programs might help someone in my situation?

Answer: A person of this income level may qualify for Medicaid, which is a separate agency from Medicare, administered by individual States, for low-income folks. Apply through Department of Health and Human Services in your state. If you qualify for Medicaid, it can go along with your Medicare. This is referred to as dual-eligible (Medicare & Medicaid). Dual eligible individuals qualify for additional benefits. There is another program for low-income folks called Extra Help for Prescription Drug Costs. The income brackets for this program are slightly higher than those for Medicaid. Some folks qualify for Medicare, Medicaid and Extra Help for Prescription Drug Costs. If necessary, I'm able to guide folks in applying for Medicaid and/or Extra Help. Additionally, I offer benefit reviews at no charge, to see if I can offer you more benefits or lower premiums or both.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: The governmental agency, Medicare, does not actually employ licensed insurance agents. Employees of the agency do not assist beneficiaries in selecting the 'right' plan for folks. CAUTION: If someone calls you and says they work for Medicare and want to help you select a plan, hang up the phone immediately! This function can only be administered by licensed insurance agents, who are required to: Bi-annual Continuing Education (24 credit hours, 3 of which must be on Ethics) and Annual Certification and Training on specific plan benefits of all the plans they represent. There are different types of licensed insurance agents: independent self-employed, agency-employed agents, telemarketing firm employed agents and captive agents employed by insurance carriers which are only allowed to represent the carrier they are employed by. While there are certainly 'good' and 'bad' agents in all of these roles, I'd recommend using either of the first two I mentioned. Independent, self-employed agents represent a variety of plans and carriers and can compare 'apples to apples' between the various plans. These agents, such as myself, rely on referrals to build up their business, which means they want to do the best that they can for their clients.
