Q&A with Lawanda Radford

I want to be proactive about my health. What preventive services should I be taking advantage of with Medicare?

Answer: Hi, that’s a great question. Medicare covers many preventive services to help you stay healthy. I would recommend getting your free Annual Wellness Visit each year, plus screenings for conditions like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Medicare also covers important vaccines like flu, COVID-19, and shingles. Talk to your doctor to see which services are right for you. Hope this information helps.

How does Medicare cover palliative care for serious illnesses, and what’s the difference between palliative care and hospice care?

Answer: Hi great question, medicare helps cover palliative care through Part B if it’s provided by doctors or specialists—it's for managing pain and symptoms during serious illness, even while getting treatment. Hospice care is covered under Part A and is for people near the end of life who stop curative treatments. Palliative care can happen anytime; hospice is for end-of-life care. Hope this information helps.

Don't you think Medicare's focus on treatment rather than prevention is backwards?

Answer: You're absolutely right to raise that point—yet focusing more on prevention could help seniors stay healthier and avoid serious issues down the line. Thankfully, Medicare has been adding more preventive services in recent years, and that’s a step in the right direction.

I'm enrolled in a Medigap Plan F, and I'm not sure how my emergency room visits are handled. Is there a copay I should expect?

Answer: Great question! With Medigap Plan F, most out-of-pocket costs are covered—including emergency room visits—so you typically won’t have a copay. It’s one of the most comprehensive Medigap plans available.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: Working with a Medicare agent can make things much easier—they help you compare plans, find the best coverage for your needs, and make sure you’re not overpaying. Plus, their help comes at no extra cost to you!

I've been on my employer's health plan but am retiring soon. What should I consider when moving to Medicare?

Answer: Thank you for your question, and congratulations on your upcoming retirement! If you’re leaving an employer health plan, you’ll have a Special Enrollment Period to join Medicare—don’t delay to avoid penalties. Understand the Parts of Medicare: Parts, A, B,C, and D. Need help?
