Q&A with Robert Baez

What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answer: I like the opportunity to meet people and help them find the best products for their medical needs. It is my honor to ensure they are happy with their policies and give the best support to their medical process.

Are Medicare Advantage plans really "free," or is that just clever marketing?

Answer: Medicare Advantage Plans for the most part do not have premiums, copays for preventive care, and in some cases, prescriptions may also be covered.

Why are hospitals not taking Medicare Advantage plans?

Answer: Hospitals and health care centers are contracted with carriers and depending on the situation may not renew their contract. You should check with your insurance carrier or medical center to see if they are contracted with your insurance carrier.

I'm planning a long trip overseas. What happens if I need medical care while I'm away from the US?

Answer: your insurance plan may cover emergency cases while out of the US. You should check with your insurance carrier or review your summary of benefits.

How does Medicare handle coverage for experimental treatments or clinical trials?

Answer: Medicare doesn’t cover clinical research itself; it may cover certain treatments or services you get as part of participating in the trial. You will need to check with your insurance carrier to ensure you can move forward with the clinical research.

Can you explain Special Needs Plans in Medicare?

Answer: A SNP provides benefits and services to people with specific severe and

chronic diseases, certain health care needs, or who also have Medicaid

coverage. SNPs include care coordination services and tailor their benefits,

provider choices, and list of drugs (formularies) to best meet the specific

needs of the groups they serve.

I've heard about new AI-powered diagnostic tools for early disease detection. Does Medicare cover any of these cutting-edge technologies?

Answer: New senate bill would create Medicare payment pathway for AI-enabled devices. The Health Tech Investment Act proposes a Medicare payment system for FDA-cleared AI-enabled devices, facilitating their clinical integration. The Health Tech Investment Act (S. 1399), introduced by Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) and Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), would establish a predictable Medicare payment system for AI-enabled medical devices that have been cleared by the FDA. These devices include algorithm-based healthcare services used in diagnostics, imaging, and other areas of clinical care.

I use several prescription apps and digital therapeutics for my chronic conditions. Does Medicare provide any coverage for digital health tools in cases like mine?

Answer: The Medicare statute does not directly address coverage of digital health technologies, nor does the statute specifically limit or prohibit coverage of digital health technologies within the program’s benefit categories. Please check with your insurance carrier for more details.

I'm homebound and need remote monitoring for my heart condition. What Medicare benefits might apply to someone in my situation?

Answer: Medicare and private insurers often cover medically necessary cardiac monitoring devices for home use. Check with your insurance carrier/summary of benefits.

What's a Medicare rule or regulation that's outdated or unfair to seniors?

Answer: Medicare raises costs for seniors who miss their Part B or Part D signup deadline, even if they didn’t know about it. Government Required Disclaimer: Agents may not offer every plan available in your area.

Are mental health services like therapy fully covered under Original Medicare?

Answer: Medicare-covered mental health care includes:

• Services provided by marriage and family therapists, and mental health

counselors. Partial hospitalization, Intensive outpatient program. Must check with your insurance plan/summary of benefits for more details.

My income fluctuates significantly year to year from investment distributions. How can I avoid IRMAA surcharges when I have an unusually high-income year?

Answer: If your income is above a certain limit

(in 2025 $106,000 if you file individually or $212,000 if you’re married

and file jointly), you’ll pay an extra amount in addition to your plan

premium (sometimes called “Part D IRMAA”). You’ll also have to pay this

extra amount if you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes drug

coverage. This doesn’t affect everyone, so most people won’t pay an extra

amount.

Isn't Medicare headed for a crisis with so many baby boomers aging into the system?

Answer: The Baby Boomer generation is transforming the Medicare landscape, creating both opportunities and challenges for the healthcare system. As tens of millions of Baby Boomers retire and transition into their senior years, the demand for Medicare services is soaring. Let's hope for the best.

I need both a psychiatrist for medication and a therapist for talk therapy. How does Medicare coordinate coverage for these different providers?

Answer: These services may vary by plan. Contact your plan for

specific details and to find out if you’re eligible.

I'm participating in a clinical trial for a new cancer treatment that uses personalized medicine based on my genetic profile. How does Medicare coverage work in this situation?

Answer: Clinical research studies test how well different types of medical care work and

if they’re safe, like how well a cancer drug works. For certain clinical research

studies, Medicare covers some costs, like office visits and tests. You may pay

20% of the Medicare-approved amount, depending on the treatment you get. Check with your plan.

Don't you think Medicare's technology systems are outdated and inefficient?

Answer: I'll have to say that there's always room for improvement. Changes are always being made for more efficiency.

Could Medicare ever adopt a tiered premium system based on lifestyle factors?

Answer: That could potentially happen; however, it would be a challenging and controversial process. Medicare is currently a single tiered system and provides coverage for elderly and low income as well.

I went to a free Medicare seminar and it felt like a timeshare pitch. Are any of those events actually helpful?

Answer: They are mostly helpful but to get the best in what your needs are it's best to do a one on one with a Licensed Trusted Advisor.
