Q&A with Scott Klag

Answer: Who I should choose to advise me on the myriads of choices and benefits that are available to Me. Face to Face is always better than over the phone.

Answer: The most important misconception that clients have is that their plan will stay the same year over year. They don't think they need to review their plan on a yearly basis. Annual reviews during the AEP October 1 thru December 7 ARE ESSENTIAL!

Answer: Original Medicare only provides a "Welcome to Medicare" physical the first year. After that you will have to pay if you stay on Original Medicare. If you have a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement the Annual physical is at a $0 cost.

Answer: Depending on your Health Plan you will be given a list of approved Durable Medical Equipment providers that you can use. The copays range from $0 to 20% of the cost of the equipment.

Answer: Generally, there are no tax benefits in paying your Medicare premiums during retirement. You always want to check with a Tax Professional each and every year to see if anything has changed.

Answer: It will not influence Medicare policies in any way. These are not issues that determine the cost of Medicare policies. Obviously, if we have a catastrophic event like COVID, that will effect the policies in a negative way, as we have seen.

Answer: IF you are in the correct Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage plan then most of these screenings will be covered. Make sure you check with your agent before setting those up.

Answer: Generally, in an HMO you would not be able to see an Out of Network provider without some type of special consideration. You should always check with your agent or your plan to see if there are exceptions.

Answer: If I could change one thing about Medicare, I would simplify the entire process and do away with call centers offering plans to unsuspecting seniors. Medicare is extremely complex and if you don't have proper guidance, you may make a serious financial mistake.

Answer: In part yes. The STAR ratings measure several key points that effect the member's experience with the insurance carrier. Examples are customer service and health outcomes with network providers.

Answer: Medicare Supplements are different than your Part C Medicare Advantage plans. Medicare supplements have a "Guarantee Issue" time period which is 3 months prior to your 65th Birthday, the month of your 65th Birthday and 3 months following your 65th Birthday. There are a few other situations that would offer the "Guarantee Issue" option. You would need to consult with your Medicare professional agent to see if you qualify. Otherwise, in order to get a Medigap plan you would be subject to medical approval.
