Q&A with Jessica Yen Le

I have Medicare A and B, which was secondary to my large group health plan. My spouse passed away in late June 2025, and his company is providing COBRA coverage for six months, through January. If I wait until then, will I still have guaranteed issue for a Medicare supplement, or do I have only 63 days from June 30 (until Sept 1) to enroll? I'm in CO

Answer: I’m very sorry for your loss. Since your COBRA coverage continues through January 2026, your guaranteed issue right for a Medicare supplement begins when your COBRA ends, the 63-day window to enroll starts from the actual loss of coverage, not from your spouse’s passing. This ensures you can keep COBRA until then and still qualify for a Medigap plan without medical underwriting. Hope this helps.

Which states have the best Medicare policies?

Answer: I wish I could give you a one-size-fits-all answer, but the “best” state for Medicare really depends on your needs. For example, Pennsylvania and Florida offer lots of plan options, Texas, Nevada, and Rhode Island have lower premiums, and Massachusetts, Hawaii, and Rhode Island are known for strong healthcare quality. California also has some unique Medigap rules to be aware of. The only suggestion I can give to this question is the key is to find a plan that fits your situation, looking at options, costs, and quality of care that work best for you.

I’ll be turning 65 in April. I have full VA coverage and good hospital and doctor coverage through Eisenhower here in the desert. The VA doesn’t provide dental care. Do I still need to enroll in Medicare, and if so, which part makes sense for my situation?

Answer: First, thank you so much for your service. Since you’re turning 65, here’s how Medicare works with your VA and Eisenhower coverage:

- Part A is free, so it makes sense to enroll. Part B is $185 a month in 2025, VA only covers you in the VA system, so Part B gives you access to doctors and hospitals outside . If you wait to enroll later, Medicare may add a lifetime penalty. You don’t need Part D because your VA drug coverage is already creditable. For dental, some part C plans (including part A+B+ additional benefits) offers really great additional benefits, and you can also get the separate dental coverage for bigger coverage and network.

So bottom line: take Part A, think carefully about Part B for flexibility outside the VA (secondary professional opinion consideration), skip Part D, and consider a dental plan if you’d like coverage there.

Please be careful when choosing your Medicare coverage, we both don't want you to get into any disadvantage situation or financial risk due to medical bill. Hope this answer helps.

Will Medicare cover asthma and other breathing conditions?

Answer: Medicare itself covers 80% of your medical services bills. Depends on which plan you are in, majority of the plans should cover the pulmonary conditions.

What's your go-to strategy for helping someone decide between Medicare Advantage and Medigap?

Answer: It would be depends on each case situation. I believe if you can afford the medigap, go for it, because the cost will increase by you aged. If you cannot, go for advantage, the medical group can follow up with your health journey to make sure you get enough care as well as they have system to avoid the malpractice problems, etc. Each of them have their own pros & cons. So make sure to understand what they are and which one is suitable for your own situation & requirements. Hope each of you get the right plan.
