My friend lives in a different city and has a much more detailed Medicare plan. Is their plan dependent on their location?
Answered by 79 licensed agents
Medicare Advantage plans differ in some ways in providing requirements and services within and between states. These decisions are not Medicare decisions. They are based on the insurance carriers that provide these Advantage plans and the individual state regulations.

Questions come in. A friend lives in a different city and has much more detailed Medicare plans. Does it depend on their location? And yes, if you live in a large metropolitan area, you're definitely gonna have more choices because there's a larger population. When you get into smaller rural areas, there's less option when it comes to Medicare plans. So I would sit down with a licensed agent so they can understand your situation and figure out what is the best option for you when it comes to your Medicare plan here. Hopefully, that answers your question. Thank you.

So if someone lives in a different city than you, they could have, and probably do have, a much different Medicare plan. Whether that's a Medicare Supplement plan or a Medigap plan, if they have a Medicare Advantage plan, those are specific to that particular area and they're broken down by zip codes. It really depends on what area of the state you live in. If you're in a rural area, the Medicare Advantage plans are going to be less robust. They're not going to have as many benefits as, like, when we're in the Phoenix-Scottsdale area because there are so many 65+ people and there's so much competition. The benefits are just gonna be better versus a rural area where the networks are much smaller.

Medicare supplements do not change plans based on location, but they do changes their premium costs. Of course like all things Medicare there are 3 states that sell their Medicare supplements differently. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Massachusetts sell their supplements in what is know as "ala carte". This means the beneficiary can choose which Medicare benefits they would like to purchase without having to purchase them all.

Don’t forget that from Jan 1 -March 31 you can switch Medicare advantage plans 1 time or drop your Medicare advantage plan and go back to original Medicare.

Welcome to Medicare Agent's Hub, a great place to get Medicare information for seniors. My friend lives in a different city and has a much more detailed Medicare plan. Is their plan dependent on their location? You must be talking about a Medicare Advantage plan, and yes, they are absolutely totally different from zip code to zip code, even in each state.
So what I look at for my clients on the Medicare Advantage side is what plan has the best coverage that covers your doctors, your facilities, and your prescription drugs. So again, great question, but yes, the Medicare Advantage plans also change every year, so you really have to keep up on it each year to make sure that your doctor, your facilities, and your drugs are still covered by that plan. That's what I do for clients every day here at my State Farm Agency on Kelly Street in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Each and every year, we look at how their plan worked the prior year and what it's going to do the following year. Is the doctor there or the facilities there? Are their drugs still covered? Those are the things you want to work with a Medicare agent like myself who can keep you ahead each and every year and make sure there are no critical mistakes made. I'd love to...

Depending upon the individual insurance company, if they are well-known, they will do everything possible to broach all Medicare topics with a fine tooth comb. It could be that your individual agent is fairly new to the business and has yet to acquire all of the digital files available to forward to their customers.
This is a sin as the upper managers need to instruct the neophytes about how to get their numerous messages across. So, when you became Medicare-eligible, I hope that you realized that you need to obtain 2nd and even 3rd opinions from multiple-aged agents. That is why many clients appreciate that old expression about someone like me: "There may be snow on the mountain but there is still fire in the furnace!". If you're not fully understanding about any Medicare-related rule, try searching on the Medicare.gov website in the open horizontal box. You may be surprised at what you can find.

Plans are insured or covered by a Medicare Advantage (HMO, PPO and PFFS) organization with a Medicare contract and/or a Medicare-approved Part D sponsor. Enrollment in the plan depends on the plan’s contract renewal with Medicare. We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.

My recommendation is to not get an advantage plan. Every time you add a perk to the plan your maximum out of pocket per year goes up. That's a bait that the insurance companies do to save them money and to cost you more money when you become seriously ill

They depend on location.
Do you live in a small town? Where there are more people, the benefits will be higher.
If your friend has Medicaid as well as Medicare, he would be able to have more benefits.

Yes — location absolutely matters when it comes to Medicare Advantage plans. If your friend lives in a different county, even within the same state, their plan options and benefits can be completely different from yours. The plans might even have the same name or carrier, but the benefits, copays, provider networks, and drug coverage can vary depending on the county.
That’s because Medicare Advantage plans are approved and priced by county, not by state or nationally. Insurance companies design their plans around local healthcare networks and costs, so what’s available (and affordable) in one area might look very different in another.
So yes — if your friend’s city is in a different county, it’s very possible they have a more detailed or richer plan, even if it’s technically the same plan name. Always review what’s available in your specific ZIP code each year to make sure you’re getting the best option for your area.

Health insurance companies use hundreds if not thousands of datapoints to determine what plans they offer in geographical locations.
If you move to a different zip code, it is critical you contact either your broker or agent, or insurance company if you self-enrolled. Otherwise, you might go to a new provider who doesn’t take your plan.
Think of it like this - Insurance companies have many types of plans, and the different types have specific nuances. Much like a car manufacturer has different models of vehicles, and each model has different trim levels.

The "more detailed" plan your friend has is likely a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan or a Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug) plan, both of which are offered by private insurance companies.
Medicare Advantage (Part C): These plans have specific service areas (often defined by county or state). The private insurance company tailors the benefits, network of doctors/hospitals, and extra perks (like dental, vision, and hearing coverage) based on the local market.
Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Plans): These plans are also offered by private companies and are typically region based

• Their city or ZIP code has different available plans.
• Their state’s rules or insurer options might offer richer benefits or more competition.
If you’re ever considering switching or comparing plans, you can visit Medicare.gov and use their Plan Finder tool to compare options based on ZIP code.

With that said, all Advantage plans cover emergency care out of network.
If your friend is traveling and has an emergency, her insurance will usually cover out of network, but if she is moving... she will either want Medigap plan G/ N or change Advantage plans to her new location.
I hope this helps.
