Q&A with Joseph Timreck

My friend lives in a different city and has a much more detailed Medicare plan. Is their plan dependent on their location?

Answer: Yes, Medicare Advantage plans are different based on where you live. A person’s county determine’s a plan’s availability and a plan’s cost.

Why does Medicare allow insurance companies to bombard seniors with confusing mail and TV ads?

Answer: That’s a great question. Medicare does try to regulate marketing materials so it’s not so confusing to seniors but it is not a perfect system. That’s why I think it’s important for seniors to have an independent insurance agent who represents several different insurance companies. That way, it’s less confusing for the Medicare member and any questions can be answered immediately by a trained professional!

My pharmacist mentioned the Medicare "donut hole" is going away in 2025. What does that actually mean for me?

Answer: The donut hole was a period of time in your prescription coverage where you had to pay basically full cost for the medication until your out of pocket reached a certain amount, at wich point you’d enter another period of time call catastrophic coverage, where the company covered a good chunk of the cost. The donut hole has gone away, though, and now once you’ve reached $2,200 out of pocket for medications, you don’t have to pay anything for the remainder of the year at which point it will reset.

I need a hearing aid but I've heard Medicare doesn't cover them. Is there any way around this?

Answer: Medicare Advantage Plans do cover a large portion of the cost for hearing aids. Medicare Advantage Plans are sometimes referred to Part C plans because they include the benefits of A and B as well as other benefits (most of the plans include prescription drug coverage, part D).

Is my Medicare deductible supposed change from year to year?

Answer: Yes, the Medicare deductible does change from year to year. Part A & Part B both change every year.

I've been on a Part D plan for a while, and I'm wondering why my generic prescriptions suddenly cost more. Did something change?

Answer: Every year Part D plans change. Your cost can go up or down from year to year depending on the plan. Some plans can go years without making any changes, and then maybe they had to change something this year to keep up with the rising costs and inflation.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: Working with a Medicare agent means you’ll have access to an individual who is licensed by the state. They’ve also completed their annual Medicare compliance training. So they are educated in the different plans they offer. Medicare agents give you access to a number of different options and you don’t have to worry about long hold times like you would when calling an 800 number.

Are Medicare agents paid by specific insurance to sign up clients to their plans only

Answer: Medicare agents are all paid a commission from the carrier they write the policy with. The agent has to be appointed through the state in order to sell that policy. Some Medicare agents work for independent agencies and are paid a percentage of that commission that is paid to the agency.
