Does Medicare cover SilverSneakers gym memberships?

Answered by 16 licensed agents

Original Medicare does not cover SilverSneakers or gym memberships. However, many Medicare Advantage plans and some Medigap plans include SilverSneakers as an extra fitness benefit at no additional cost.

If your plan includes it, you can access participating gyms, fitness classes, and online workouts using your SilverSneakers membership ID. Coverage varies by carrier and ZIP code, so you should check your specific plan benefits or use the official SilverSneakers eligibility tool.

So the question is, does Medicare cover SilverSneakers gym memberships?

Medicare does not cover SilverSneakers gym memberships. However, there are some Medicare Advantage plans that do have SilverSneakers, or something along those lines, to help with gym memberships.

It is a great feature for Medicare Advantage plans. However, it should not be the only deciding factor for the Medicare plan that you choose. Just keep in mind that sometimes you need to go for a plan that will fit your primary needs first, which is to have working health insurance, as opposed to some other policies that might offer additional benefits. However, sometimes these benefits can be super helpful to people.

They also vary from zip code to zip code and state to state. Hopefully this helps.

Greetings and salutations. The question is, does Medicare cover SilverSneakers gym membership? The short answer is no.

Original Medicare covers very specific things: doctors, hospitals, etc. But it's very, very specific. That's when Medicare Advantage comes in. Medicare Advantage covers what Original Medicare covers, plus it usually adds extra benefits.

One of those benefits could be, depending on the Medicare Advantage plan that you choose, could cover the SilverSneakers gym membership.

There are several carriers that do include the Silver Sneaker gym membership with their plans. There are also some plans that may include items to use at home if not able to get to the gym.

Some plans do cover silver sneakers. Not all have the same benefits. I would recommend you connect with a local broker.

Original Medicare does not cover SilverSneakers gym memberships.

However, many Medicare Advantage plans include SilverSneakers or a similar fitness benefit at no extra cost. Some Medicare Supplement/Medigap carriers may also offer fitness discounts or programs, but it depends on the company and state.

SilverSneakers is plan-specific, not a standard Medicare benefit.

Medicare itself does not cover silver sneaks. Silver Sneakers is offered from the Medicare Advantage plans typically and some of the Medicare Supplement plans also offer it.

Original Medicare by itself does not cover SilverSneakers or any gym membership. That's a perk that can be included with some Medicare Advantage plans (and sometimes certain retiree/Medigap or group plans have their own fitness benefit), but it's not a core Medicare benefit.

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) does not include SilverSneakers, but many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans and some Medigap plans do — at no additional cost beyond plan premiums.

About 95% of Medicare Advantage plans include some form of fitness benefit.

What SilverSneakers includes:

Access to roughly 14,000 locations nationwide, fitness equipment, group classes (yoga, tai chi, water aerobics, Zumba, strength & balance), plus pools, tennis courts, and walking tracks where available.
