This is in response to the question of whether Medicare pays for medical marijuana for pain during chemotherapy, and the flat-out answer is no. Medicare, as of 2025, will pay for nausea and the side effects, but not for pain. So if you want to use THC or cannabinoids for pain management, I think we all know where to find a dispensary, and your oncologist or prescribing physician will prescribe you the CMS-approved prescriptions for pain management. Unfortunately, some people want that, but at this point, we have to privately purchase it, and we all know where we can get that from. Thank you for the question, and keep asking.

You have to keep in mind several things:
1.) Medicare is a federal program.
2.) If a drug is considered illegal at the federal level, then a federal program is not going to cover that drug.
If a synthetic becomes an FDA approved medication, then this may be covered by Medicare through either Part B or Part D. Many of the medications approved for chronic pain or cancer are used to address nausea or vomiting as a result of these conditions.

My only other suggestion is to do a thorough review of all of your Medicare options to save money in other areas. It isn't unusual to save $50 per month with a review. My name is Brian, and I help people save money on Medicare and help people to help people with Medicare. Contact me if you need a resource.

Federal law classifies marijuana as a controlled substance, which prevents Medicare from covering it.

However, There are some exceptions for FDA approved cannabinoid-based drugs. Examples include Epidiolex (for specific epilepsy types), Dronabinol (Marinol) (for cancer-related nausea or AIDS-related weight loss), Syndros (dronabinol solution) and Cesamet (nabilone).
