Answer: A medical power of attorny can be helpful for a family member to have more open discussions with the patient's medical and insurance providers. In Texas, a power of attorney can be set up using just a standard form and a notary. However, this can be revoked at any time, and can be complicated if more than one family member wishes to be involved. In cases of dementia, mental illness, or serious chronic health issues, a legal medical guardianship holds more power, but requires an attorney to go through the court system.

Answer: If you are happy with your creditable employer plan, or if you are carry dependants on that plan, you can delay Medicare without penalties. You will get a special election to enroll in Medicare when you retire or when your dependants are eligible for other coverage. You can enroll in Medicare Part A only this time since it is generally free of premium. If you contribute to an HSA, delay Part A for now -IRS rules do not allow HSA contributions once you have a Medicare number!

Answer: While certain criteria must be met, many medical devices like insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors, or seizure monitors are covered by Medicare. To qualify, a Medicare approved physician must write a valid prescription and provide documentation that the patient meets the criteria. The item may then be purchased at a Medicare approved vendor. Typically these items are covered at about 80%, so you will owe a portion of the cost.

Answer: Because Medicare does not cover Medicare, you may want to consider a Long Term Care insurance policy. Another option is to work with a financial planner or attorney that specializes in Medicaid spend down to plan for long term care needs.

Answer: Outpatient mental services are covered under Part B. Some services like an annual depression screening may have limits, but most will not including psychiatrist/therapist visists and injectable medications that must be done in a doctor office. Medicare Advantage patients will likely need to use in network providers and may need referrals.

Answer: Medicare can help to pay for care up to 100 days as long as there is a recovery plan. If no recovery is possible or if your stay exceeds 100 days, you will be cosidered self pay. Lower income persons may qualify for benefits under your state's Medicaid program

Answer: While Medicare does not cover nursing homes, memory care centers, or in home caregivers, there can be coverage through Part A under hospice benefits. Because Alzheimer's Disease is a terminal condition, Medicare will cover hospice care in advanced stages.

Answer: Original Medicare will work in U.S. territories. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you will likely need to change plans when you move. Medicare allows a Special Election Period when you move to a new area.

Answer: Medical marijuana is not approved by Medicare or any Medicare Rx coverage. While some states have legalized medical marijuana, it is not legal federally.

Answer: Original Medicare generally covers vitrual providers as long as they accept Medicare. Many Medicare Advantage plans have extensive virtual provider options for behavioral health, some as low as $0 copay.

Answer: Yes. If you have gaps inyour Medicare coverage, you may owe penalties and you may only be able to enroll at certain times of the year when you return to the U.S.
