Most preventative services and procedures are covered under Medicare. Refer to your benefits explanation guide for specifics. There are other preventative procedures that must be medically necessary to be covered.

Protective screening during the annual wellness visit is covered by Medicare. Be mindful of what you request, as it will depend on how your doctor codes the screening.

Hi, thanks for watching. So the question is, are preventative screenings covered by Medicare? The easy answer to that is yes, they're covered. But if it turns to a diagnostic type screening, you're going to be billed for it. The type of preventative screenings are like your yearly visit, which should be free. The one-time welcome to Medicare within the first 12 months, that's free. Those screenings are covered, but you're going to be billed for a screening if it's considered diagnostic, meaning they're looking for something that they think is already there. If it's a preventative screening, like cancer, a lot of colonoscopies, mammograms, those types of things are covered and usually at no cost.

Medicare covers a wide range of preventive screenings and services to detect illnesses early, generally with no out-of-pocket cost (no deductible or coinsurance) if the provider accepts assignment.

Most of these services are covered under Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance).

Key Details on Covered Services & Parts:

Part B Coverage: Covers yearly "Wellness" visits, "Welcome to Medicare" visits, cardiovascular screenings, diabetes screenings, cancer screenings (mammograms, colonoscopies, Pap tests), flu shots, and HIV screenings.

Preventive vs. Diagnostic: While preventive screenings (to prevent illness) are free, if a screening turns into a diagnostic test (to diagnose a known symptom or condition), you may owe copayments.

Requirements: Services must be deemed "medically necessary" and, in some cases, are only covered for those with specific risk factors.

Vaccines: Part B covers influenza, pneumococcal, and Hepatitis B vaccines.

Part D: Covers certain vaccines, such as the shingles shot, which are not covered by Part B.

Always ensure your doctor accepts assignment to ensure the $0 cost share.

Voss Speros here, Greek god of Medicare, talking about Medicare today. The question is, are preventive screenings covered by Medicare? Yes, they are covered by Medicare. Medicare Advantage has a nice big list at the beginning of the summary of benefits of what screenings are covered. The Medicare insurance companies want to make sure you're healthy. So get on a plan and get the screenings done. Some Advantage plans will actually pay you money to do the preventive screenings every year. A couple dollars here, a couple of dollars there, it adds up. It adds up over time. So yes, preventive screenings are covered under Medicare. If you have any questions on that, give us a call. We'll see what your plan covers. And if you want something else, we'll take a look at it. Have a good day.

Not necessarily. There are two kinds of “coding” that a doctor’s billing dept will assign to a visit. One is based on a real complaint and is coded as “diagnostic”. But when going for a yearly checkup, with no specific symptoms, that would be coded as being “preventive”. Though, if the checkup yields a problem, now the preventive code has to be changed to a diagnostic code. Thus, depending upon what plan & what company you have, at times your Medicare Advantage firm may want a “prior authorization” to occur before they are to approve any coverage.

Yes, many preventive screenings are covered by Medicare & some are covered at no cost to the beneficiary. Specifically, Medicare Part B covers a wide range of preventive services, including screenings for various health conditions, vaccinations, & counseling. Here's a more detailed explanation:

Medicare Part B Coverage: Preventive services are generally covered under Medicare Part B, which helps pay for doctor visits & outpatient care. No Cost Sharing for Some Screenings: Many preventive screenings are covered without any deductible, copay, or coinsurance charges. This means that the beneficiary won't have to pay anything for these services.

Specific Examples:

Examples of covered preventive services include:

Annual Wellness Visits: Medicare Part B covers a yearly "Wellness" visit to develop a personalized plan to help prevent disease & disability, based on your current health & risk factors.

Welcome to Medicare Exam: Medicare covers a one-time "Welcome to Medicare" visit within the first 12 months of Part B coverage.

Screenings for various conditions: This includes screenings for colorectal cancer, mammograms, & other conditions.

Vaccinations: Medicare covers many recommended vaccinations, such as the flu & pneumonia shot.

Counseling & education: This includes counseling & education on various health topics.

Eligibility and Requirements:

Eligibility for free preventive screenings is often based on age, risk factors & Medicare-determined timeframes. It's also important that your doctor or other healthcare provider accepts assignment, meaning they accept the Medicare-approved amount as payment in full.

Checking Your Coverage:

You can check your specific coverage & eligibility for preventive services by logging into your secure Medicare account or by contacting Medicare.

In summary, Medicare offers a comprehensive range of preventive services, many of which are covered at no cost to the beneficiary. These services play a crucial in promoting healthy aging.
