Can I keep seeing my current doctors if I switch to a Medicare Advantage plan, or do I have to find new ones?

Answered by 119 licensed agents

You may or may not keep your current doctor's when switching to a Medicare advantage plan. Some HMO's and PPO's have extensive networks and your doctors may all participate. If you decide on an HMO you just stay in network. PPO's allow you to go out of network though your cost may be higher.

So the question is, can I keep seeing my current doctors if I switch to a Medicare Advantage plan, or do I have to find new ones? Well, that all depends. It depends if your doctors are in the Medicare Advantage network. It depends if they accept Medicare, or specifically, the technical term for it is, do they accept Medicare assignment? If that's true, then you need to find, or if you have a Medicare advisor that you work with that only does Medicare, that's the person that you need to help you find out, because some doctors are in the network, some are not. And it's just a matter of really strategizing what works for you.

Ahhhh… but that is the true concern isn’t it! So here’s the proper answer:

Maybe!!!

Your Doctor may today accept your Medicare Advantage plan. You’d have to check with the office to see which they will accept and which they won’t, IF THEY ACCEPT THEM AT ALL!!!

The other concern is EVEN IF he/she accepts them today, with the consistent changes in the Medicare program allowances, your office may elect to NOT accept any MA plans in the future.

So if having your Doctor is a major concern, if choosing any doctor and having the complete control of your health care moving forward is important to you, and that wherever you are in the USA that you have the CHOICE OF YOUR MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL, and to have coverage at the BEST FACILITIES IN THE COUNTRY BECAUSE YOU CAN, then keep your Original Medicare and get the best Supplement plan you can.

During Open Enrollment it is the ONLY TIME you will choose your Medical coverage with NO UNDERWRITING!!! So I encourage you to get it right now!

Medicare question: If I'm on an Advantage plan and I change to another Advantage plan, can I keep my doctors or do I have to change doctors?

So that's a good question. You can keep your doctors. When we change plans for another Advantage plan, we're going to double-check to see if your doctors are in network. Now, if your doctors are in a network and you're moving for the benefits, then yes, you will have to change your provider that you're working with. Some might be in network, some might not be, but if they're not, then yes, you have to change your doctors.

And there's some plans coming out this year that are really good. They are offering great benefits. Usually, some of the newer companies that come out have decent benefits, really low co-payments, and add some extra perks, which is nice. But the low co-payments are what we're kind of getting after. If you move to one of those, you might have to change your doctor.

But most of the time, as a broker, when we sit down with you, we're going to review your current doctors to see if they're in other plans, and then we're going to find something that kind of works for you. So it's hit and miss. If you have any questions, give us a call or send a broker. We're out to help you out. Have a good day!

It depends on whether your current doctors are in the network for the Medicare Advantage plan you’re considering. Unlike Original Medicare plus a supplement, Medicare Advantage plans use managed-care networks—so some doctors will be in-network, some out-of-network, and some not accept the plan at all.

If your doctors are in-network, you can keep seeing them with standard copays. But if they’re not, you may pay much more or may not be able to see them under the plan. The safest move is to check each doctor before you enroll so you know exactly what your access will look like.

Medicare Advantage plans are managed care plans and have many physicians who are in network, so you will have a wide range of doctors and specialists to choose from. If you prefer to stay with your current doctor, make sure he or she is in network for the plan you select. Note: A PPO plan will allow you to see a doctor outside of the plan's network, usually at a higher co pay, however, that doctor must first agree to accept your PPO plan. It is very important to do your research and to enlist an agent who will help ensure your plan meets your specific needs.

If you sign up for a Medicare Advantage PPO plan you can go out of network but it will cost you more.

Its important to get with an Independent Broker and have them verify that your doctors are in network and prescriptions covered for the plan you are thinking of signing up for.

Your plan needs to be reviewed yearly because the plans change every year. Whats right for this year may no be the right plan for you next year.

It's possible you might need to change doctors. Not every doctor accepts every plan. This means, if they don't accept the plan then the doctor(s) is/are NOT IN NETWORK. With a PPO, you can go out-of network, but you will pay higher out-of-pocket costs (copays, deductibles). With an HMO, generally, the out-of-network option doesn't even exist. This means, in most cases, you would pay 100% for the medical service/appointment and your plan would pay nothing. And lastly, Medicare Advantage plans change every year. One of the consequences of this is that your current plan may not be accepted by your current doctor(s) for the following calendar year.

Most Medicare Advantage plans have network restrictions with HMO plans being most restrictive and PPO plans being more flexible. If you join an HMO Medicare advantage plan and your doctor is not in the plan’s network you will have to pay for 100% of the cost of that visit. If you join a PPO plan and the doctor is not in the network you may still be able to see the doctor if he bills your insurance, but your cost may be higher than it would be if you chose a network provider.

Ultimately, if your doctor is very important to you, make sure he is a part of the network or bills your insurance. Keep in mind that networks can change and doctors are not guaranteed to remain in the network.

Short answer: maybe — but you have to check first.

With a Medicare Advantage plan, everything hinges on the network. Before enrolling, a good independent Medicare broker should help you confirm two critical things up front:

• Are your prescription drugs covered?

• Are the doctors you trust in the plan’s network?

Depending on how many doctors you see — and which health systems they’re associated with — that may or may not work out. There are no perfect Medicare plans, but there are solid ones. That said, if your “must-keep” list of doctors is long, asking a Medicare Advantage plan to accommodate all of them can be a tall order.

If network access is a concern, a PPO may be an option if one is available in your area. PPOs offer more flexibility but usually come with higher costs when you go outside the network. All else being equal, most beneficiaries do best with an HMO that has a large, well-established provider network.

The bottom line: don’t assume — verify. Checking your doctors before you enroll can save you a lot of frustration later.

Maybe! I love when I get to answer a question with a "yes" and a "no". Since Medicare Advantage plans are "managed care" plans, you may be restricted by a plan provider's network (of doctors and facilities) or the type of network (ie. HMO vs. PPO). This is why it is important to verify if your doctor is in-network for any plan you may be interested in. If the doctor is out-of-network, depending on the plan, you may or may not have any insurance coverage to see that doctor - resulting in significantly more out of pocket expenses.

If your doctor is in network with the carrier and plan you enroll in, you can still see your current doctors. If the plan is an HMO, your doctor must be in network in order to be covered by the plan. If they are not, you would need to seek another provider.

If the plan a PPO or HMO-POS, the plan MAY allow out-of-network coverage. However, you will want to know about any out-of-network limitations, higher copays and cost-share costs (if any), and how you will be billed.

Before you select a MA plan and enroll:

- know what carriers and plans each of your doctors participates with BEFORE you enroll.

- Ensure all of your medications are on the formulary of selected plan

- Ensure your other healthcare services and needs are covered like labs, any therapies, pharmacy, and hospitals.

Working with a caring, knowledgeable Medicare broker will ensure these questions and more are thoroughly reviewed for you. However, if you'd rather attempt finding a plan on your own, it's recommended you explore your plan options and coverage on medicare.gov.

Should any of your current doctors be registered in the Advantage plan of your choice (during the next Annual Open Enrollment period in the fall for a 1/1/26 effective date), they are yours to retain. Though I have found that, for example, if a client has 5 doctors that they want to keep, 2 will be in one network and the rest will be in another one. At that point, you must decide which of those doctors are more important to you, whether it is the 3-doc network or the 2-doc network.

If your on a Medicare Advantage plan with a PPO network, then no you would not be required to change your Primary Care Doctor, however if said Doctor in not in network on your Medicare Advantage plan, then it would likely increase your copay or % coinsurance. There are two primary types of Medicare Advantage Plans. 1) HMO and 2) PPO.

For the HMO type, those plans have a list of in-network doctors and medical facilities. Under the HMO style an enrollee is required to use an in-network doctor or facility to get coverage. Going to an out 0f network providers mostly results in the enrollee paying out of pocket for the services. For HMO's the service area can be nation wide, or reduced down to a county or few. Check with each plan for specifics.

For the PPO style of plan, it has both an in-network provider list and an out of network copay list. Using the in-network providers generally have a much lower copy than going to an out of network provider. The areas of coverage also can be different. Usually one can go to any provider that takes Medicare and they will take a PPO as out of network. Again, check with the individual plan to determine specifics.

To get the best help, find a local agent you are comfortable with and have them address your individual situation.

The easiest way to do this is to call the doctors office and tell them what plan you have and ask if they participate in that plan. you can also do this before you choose your plan, to be sure that you will have continuous access to the doctor you want. Not every doctor is accepted by every plan. you need to do this with both your primary care physician and every specialist that you wish to see. You should also check with the insurance company to learn which hospitals are participating with their plan.

Hey y'all, Brianna here, your favorite life and health insurance agent and owner of Be Real Insurer, bringing you real solutions. So yeah, we're gonna go over three questions that I want you to ask yourself, whether you're new to Medicare and considering a Medicare Advantage plan, or if you're reviewing your current Medicare Advantage plan during the annual open enrollment period.

The first thing that I want you to ask yourself is, are my doctors in network with this Medicare Advantage plan? It's going to include your primary care doctor and any specialists that you're seeing.

And the second thing that I want you to ask yourself is, are my prescriptions going to be covered under this Medicare Advantage plan and at a reasonable cost, along with my pharmacy? Is that going to be in network?

And the third thing that I want you to ask yourself is, what kind of extra benefits, such as dental, vision, or hearing services, do I need? Not all Medicare Advantage plans are going to cover these services, and some only at a certain extent. So it is important to know your needs.

If you're still unsure how to answer these questions or if you need any guidance while reviewing your options, I would be happy to walk you through that at no cost. Medicare doesn't have to be overwhelming, y'all. I hope that helps. And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to me. Until next time, y'all keep it real.

It depends on the specific Medicare Advantage you choose. Unlike Original Medicare, which lets you see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans typically use provider networks (like HMO or PPO). That means you can keep your current doctors only if they are in the plan’s network. Some PPO plans offer more flexibility and may allow out-of-network visits at a higher cost, while HMO plans usually require you to stay in-network. Before switching, it’s critical to check whether your doctors, specialists, and hospitals are included in the plan’s network to avoid unexpected disruptions in your care.

Typically, to continue seeing your doctor after you are on Medicare, it depends on the plan you choose. If the plan you choose is an HMO and your doctor is in the network of the Plan(HMO), then yes, you can see your doctor.

There are Medicare Advantage plans called PPO, which allow you to see a doctor outside of the plan network. If you see a doctor outside of the plan network, then you may have higher copays and higher deductibles.

There are Medicare supplement plans. You can see any Doctor and use any hospital across the United States that accepts Medicare.

The doctors choose what plans they will accept. So if you are considering choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, you should ask your doctors what plans they accept. Now, with that being said, doctors can choose year to year whether or not to take a plan. As well as during the year, a doctor can move to a different office and leave the network. You can do your best to confirm your doctor is in network; however, things can change.

That depends on the doctors & the plan. Every Advantage plan has their own network of doctors. When I am trying to find an Advantage plan for someone the goal is for that plan to cover all of their RXs at the lowest cost & all current doctors are in network. Be sure the agent you see checks everything before you enroll in a plan.

Your broker should do a review of your doctors before signing you to an MA plan to make sure that all of them are in the network of any plan you choose. So yes, you should be able to keep seeing your current doctors.

Whether you can keep your current doctors when switching to a Medicare Advantage plan depends on whether they are in the plan's network. If your doctors are in the network, you can continue seeing them. If they are not in the network, you will need to find new doctors who are part of the plan's network.

Some Medicare Advantage plans are PPO which allow you to see out of network doctors. It is important to note that costs on seeing out of network doctors in this situation can be much more expensive.

It will depend on if you are on an Advantage HMO plan or an Advantage PPO. If you’re on an HMO you will have a network of providers who are contracted with your insurance. You need to stay/see a in network provider in order for your insurance to cover. A PPO allowes a bit more freedom to see who you want.

You can keep seeing your current doctors if they are contracted with your new Advantage Plan. If it is an HMO, they have to be in-network with the new plan. If it is a PPO, I recommend you find a plan that they are contracted with so that you don't have to pay more out-of-pocket than necessary. Yes, you can see doctors out-of-network with a PPO, but many times they refuse to bill the insurance company you have and you have to pay the entire bill first and ask for reimbursement (which is a major pain). Also you are looking at paying much bigger co-pays than if you just found a plan they were contracted with.

Whether you can keep your current doctors depends on whether they are in the network of your new Medicare Advantage plan. With Original Medicare, you can see any doctor who accepts Medicare. However, with Medicare Advantage plans, you're typically limited to doctors within the plan's network.

Elaboration:

Original Medicare:

If you have Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you can see any doctor who accepts Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plans:

With Medicare Advantage plans (Part C), you're generally restricted to doctors who are in the plan's network.

Checking Your Doctor's Network:

Before switching to a Medicare Advantage plan, it's crucial to confirm if your current doctors are in the network of the plan you're considering. You can do this by checking the plan's website or contacting the plan's member services.

Switching if Necessary:

If your doctor is not in the network, you may need to find a new doctor within the plan's network. You can use the plan's online directory or contact member services for assistance in finding a new doctor.

When it comes to Medicare Advantage plans, there are many different providers and usually many different plans available per provider. If you are thinking about switching plans, it's important to review the plan and make sure your doctors, specialists and medical facilities that are a must keep are available within that plans network. When researching, be very cognizant of the particular plan. For example, Doctor X may be in network with United Medicare Advantage HMO plan 1 but may be out of Network with United HMO plan 2. In addition, there are many additional options like dental and vision that can vary widely along with wide ranging co-pays and max out of pocket limits from one Medicare Advantage plan to another. When it comes to making sure you make the right decision for yourself and it's important to sit down with a professional to review your options and benefits. It's doubly important if you are seeing a primary doc or specialist that you absolutely must keep in network!

You can likely keep your current doctors if you switch to a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan, but only if they are in that specific plan's network, which often requires finding a plan that includes your providers; HMO plans are stricter (usually only in-network), while PPO plans offer more flexibility and out-of-network coverage at a higher cost, so always check your doctor's network status on the plan's website or Medicare.gov/care-compare before enrolling for non-emergency care.

You will have to pick a plan that allows you to see your current doctors.

For an HMO plan your specialists will all come from the same Medical group of your PCP so choosing a plan that has the Primary Care Physician with the proper Medical Group (because many are contracted in multiple medical groups) is necessary.

For a PPO the Primary Care Physician and Specialists have to take the plan or you will pay the our of network copays/insurances/deductibles.

For a Medi-Gap plan you have to make sure the providers you want will accept the Medicare agreement.

Before you sign up for a Medicare Advatage plan, you should make sure the doctors you want to see are in the plan’s network. If you choose an HMO plan, you must see doctors within the plan’s network for the services to be covered. If you choose a PPO, you are allowed to see doctors outside the network as long as the doctor agrees to accept the plan, but typically out of network doctors have a higher copay. Also important to remember is that networks sometimes change from one year to another, so a doctor can be in a plan’s network this year but not participate in that network next year, so always double check that a doctor accepts your plan before you go to that doctor to avoid having the visit not be covered.

That is not a simple question. That will all depend if you are going with an HMO or a PPO plan. With an HMO plan you 100% need to make sure your doctors are in the same network or your charges will be a lot different. Now if you go with a PPO plan most of the time your doctors would not have any issues using the same doctors as you are now. It is always best to have whom ever you are working with check ALL your doctors to make sure you will be covered and you do not have any issues once you make the change.

It depends on the plan. Medicare Advantage plans use networks, so you'll want to check whether your doctors are in network before you switch. Some plans are HMOs that require you to use their network except for emergencies, while PPOs give you more flexibility to see out of network providers at a higher cost. Before enrolling, get a list of your current doctors and verify each one is in the plan's network for the upcoming year, since networks can change annually. If staying with your current doctors is a priority, that should be the first thing you check when comparing plans.

It all depends on what kind of plan you have and if your doctor is in that networks. If you switch to an MA Plan that is an HMO and your doctor is in that network, then no, you won't have to switch doctors, but if your doctor is not in then network, then yes, you will have to switch to a doctor that is in the network. If you switch to an MA Plan that is a PPO, you can still see your doctor, whether your doctor is in the plan network or not. If your doctor is not in the plan network, you will likely have a higher co-pay to see them. Also if your doctor is not in the PPO network, make sure they are willing to accept payment from your PPO's carrier.

Answered by John Weaver Medicare Insurance Agent
Whether you can keep seeing your current doctors after switching to a Medicare Advantage plan depends on the plan’s network. Most Medicare Advantage plans, like HMOs or PPOs, have a network of doctors and hospitals you must use to get the lowest costs. If your doctors are in the plan’s network, you can likely continue seeing them. However, if they’re out-of-network, you may face higher costs or need to switch doctors, especially with HMO plans that typically require in-network care except for emergencies. PPO plans offer more flexibility for out-of-network providers, but at a higher cost. Some plans, like Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS), allow you to see any Medicare-approved doctor who accepts the plan’s terms, but not all providers do.

To ensure you can keep your doctors, check the plan’s provider directory on their website or call the plan directly to confirm your doctors’ participation. You can also contact your doctors’ offices to verify if they accept the specific Medicare Advantage plan you’re considering. Always review the plan’s network rules before enrolling to avoid unexpected costs or changes in care.
