Q&A with Devorah Wittig

I'm considering a smartwatch that monitors my heart rhythm for atrial fibrillation. Will Medicare help cover this type of wearable technology?

Answer: Smartwatches are classified as consumer electronic or fitness trackers according to Medicare and are not considered medically necessary durable medical equipment so, as a general rule, they are not covered under Medicare.

Medicare MAY cover cardiac monitors if they are medical grade and prescribed by a physician so you can look into that possibility with your provider.

Some Part C plans (Medicare Advantage) offer devices such as Fitbit as wellness options or supplementary benefits. Those offerings have decreased across many plans for 2026 so you might have to seek a plan that offers that benefit.

Finally, if you are in an HSA plan (Health Savings Account), you can check with your plan as items such as the smartwatch could be covered.

When will my provider send my Annual Notice of Change?

Answer: The Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) is generally sent out to members of a plan from mid-September to mid-October each year.

Plan providers need to have their next year's changes in place before they mail out the ANOC and the goal is to have it in the hands of the member before the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) begins on October 15th of each year.

I am on disability insurance Medicare now I will be 65 in October do I have to to sign up for Medicare again?

Answer: I just now received your question on the first of December and since you turned 65 in October your question may be resolved, but for others, the answer is in general, no.

Having said that, it is advisable to check with Social Security about your individual situation as it may involve changes once you turn 65 and you will want to make sure you have all of your bases covered so there are no surprises later on.

Most people in the situation you describe have a smooth experience in this transition.

Can I keep seeing my current doctors if I switch to a Medicare Advantage plan, or do I have to find new ones?

Answer: It depends on which carrier, such as Anthem, Humana, etc., and which plan available in your county that you are looking at.

Most Advantage plans use networks of doctors and hospitals in their plans.

As you are looking at plans, your agent can check to see that your doctors are in network.

So no, you do not need to switch doctors if you do and your agent do your homework and make sure that your doctors are in network.

Every year I stress over picking a plan and still end up surprised by the bills. Is there any way to just get peace of mind with Medicare?

Answer: You don't say if you are using an Advantage Plan or a Supplement plan so we'll talk about Advantage plans.

Advantage plans are useful because they do spell out in advance what your costs should be by listing co-pays or co-insurance for services in their Summary of Benefits. As a consumer, you can look at those expenses and choose a plan accordingly. I have noticed that people who are happiest with their plans have a good understanding in advance of what their costs may be.

Study the Summary of Benefits or even the Evidence of Coverage for the plans you are considering. They are available for download as you look at a plan online. Alternatively, you could get with an agent who can explain what you can expect. Knowing expenses ahead of time may not eliminate all surprises, but it certainly can bring more peace of mind by knowing what to expect. Hope this was helpful!
