Q&A with Tracy Corwin
I'm planning to delay Social Security until age 70, but I'm turning 65 soon. How does this affect my Medicare enrollment?
Answer: If you have other coverage with prescription benefits there is no effect. If you don’t you need to apply for at least part A and a Part D or when you are ready you will have a monetary penalty that stays with you as long as you have Medicare.
Can I keep seeing my current doctors if I switch to a Medicare Advantage plan, or do I have to find new ones?
Answer: It will depend on if you are on an Advantage HMO plan or an Advantage PPO. If you’re on an HMO you will have a network of providers who are contracted with your insurance. You need to stay/see a in network provider in order for your insurance to cover. A PPO allowes a bit more freedom to see who you want.
I'm turning 65 soon, when can I enroll in Medicare?
Answer: You can enroll up to 3 months before you turn 65. But you must enroll no later than 3 months after you turn 65.
A Medicare supplement broker told me something about "extra lifetime reserve hospital days". What are those and how do they work?
Answer: They are 60 extra inpatient hospital days you can use once in your lifetime if your stay exceeds the covered 90 days for a single stay.
I tried calling Medicare and got transferred five times. Is there any way to get straight answers from them?
Answer: You can try going into your local office or reaching out to a local agent as they may be able to answer your questions.
I applied for a Medigap plan and got denied because of my health history-how is that even legal when I've paid into Medicare for years?
Answer: It's because you are applying for a private insurance not Medicare. You ARE entitled to Medicare. You can sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan and won't get denied as they take the place of Medicare so essentially they become your Medicare. Most Advantage plans are free or have a low premium. Many also have no Deductible. Please reach out if you would like help selecting one. Tracy Corwin
Will Medicare cover everything my current employer plan does?
Answer: No Medicare B will not cover Vision, dental or prescriptions. You would need an Advantage plan (part C) to have all for those additional services.
Is Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage better? Why do you recommend one over the other?
Answer: Advantage plans are better as they cover things traditional Medicine does not. Also with Just Medicare you will pay 20% for all services. With an advantage plan you usually just pay a co pay for most services. Also now some Advantage plans even reduce the amount you pay for your part B so your social security checks are larger.
How do Medicare Advantage star ratings affect the quality of care I can expect?
Answer: Medicare Advantage (MA) star ratings reflect plan quality in customer service, chronic condition management, and preventative care. Higher-rated plans (4+ stars) generally offer better quality care, lower premiums, and more supplemental benefits.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Expertise: Medicare agents have the knowledge to navigate the complexities of Medicare plans and enrollments.
Personalized Guidance: They can tailor plans to your specific healthcare needs and budget.
Avoiding Mistakes: Agents can help you avoid costly mistakes that often occur when trying to understand Medicare rules on your own.
Early Guidance: It's recommended to seek guidance early in the Medicare process to maximize your options and minimize surprises.
Free Assistance: Medicare agents and brokers provide free assistance, ensuring you don't pay any fees for their help.
By working with a Medicare agent, you can ensure that you make informed decisions about your Medicare coverage and avoid potential pitfalls.
