What's the likelihood of Medicare covering gene therapy as it becomes more common?

Answered by 26 licensed agents

Yes - I am sure the likelihood is good of coverage to become more common.

Medicare sometimes offers coverage for certain high cost treatments through specialized programs.

Medicare is likely to expand coverage for gene therapy as more evidence supporting its benefits and effectiveness emerges and as the treatments become more common and potentially more affordable.

Also have your Doctor submit an authorization for treatment to confirm coverages.

The likelihood of Medicare covering gene therapy as it becomes a reality will depend on the current Administration. There could be changes in 2026 and beyond. It will also depend on the insurance company, usually Medicare Advantage plans.

The likelihood that Medicare will cover something like gene therapy In my opinion is getting increasingly better. I’ve been in this field for about eight years and I’ve seen A lot of growth and adaptation from Medicare. I think in the near future Holistic medicine, naturopathy, gene therapy, Stem cell Based procedures will all have some kind of benefit that will be covered by Medicare.

Once gene therapy receives FDA approval as a medically accepted treatment it is likely to be considered for coverage by medicare. Currently the standard for coverage determination is treatments for injury and illness need to be reasonable and necessary.

This is a interesting question because I do believe this is a interesting question because I do believe in DNA results to treat future possible diseases. In which MediCare at this time is not covering that particular test so I don't think in the near future we will see gene therapy as a cover procedure by Medicare.

Unfortunately, I do not have an answer for this questions.

Medicare, and all other health insurance programs, cover for medically necessary services. I am not sure if gene therapy would fall into this category.

Once the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) & the Center for Disease Control (CDC) both approve any new treatment, it will become a part of the Medicare program.

Please contact 1800MEDICARE & speak with a representative about it. Discuss with them if it would be under Medicare Part A or Part B or is it being reviewed.

Medicare covers all medically necessary part a hospital services and part B medical services FDA approved - so if Jean therapy becomes FDA approved and is medically necessary that Medicare will cover 80% of the cost

This is strictly my opinion, but they are increasing the coverage. Medicare is trying to align with Medicaid, so I believe eventually there will be more coverage. Probably a 20% copay, like fusions and certain injections you receive from the doctor's office.

Medicare is likely to cover gene therapy as it becomes more common, but with a degree of complexity and consideration for specific circumstances. Gene therapies involve complex and expensive processes for preparation and administration. While promising, there can be uncertainty surrounding the long-term durability and effectiveness of gene therapies.

Over the past 37 years of my career I have seen Medicare approving more treatments. CAR T-cell gene therapy for cancer is currently approved as long as it meets FDA and CMS criteria and the Cell and Gene Therapy Model. I believe more gene therapy will be approved as long as the results of the therapy are positive.

Medicare covers gene therapy, particularly the ones covered by FDA.

Medicare Part B covers the outpatient procedures. A doctor must state that it is necessary.

After meeting the deductible, the patient is responsible for 20% .

As gene-therapy treatments become more common, it’s looking more likely that Medicare will cover more of them over time. Medicare already covers certain FDA-approved gene-modified treatments in specific situations, and CMS has been updating policies to make access easier as these therapies grow.

That said, they’re still extremely expensive, and Medicare usually waits for solid evidence and the right billing codes before approving anything broadly.

So overall, coverage is slowly expanding, but it isn’t automatic. It really depends on the treatment, the condition it’s for, and whether Medicare considers it “medically necessary.”

With this administration, they seem to be looking to cut back on procedures rather than add more that will help the patient. I wouldnt hold my breath on this being covered anytime soon.

Medicare's biggest requirement is that it be FDA-approved. There are current FDA approved genetic therapies already being used. The likelihood is very good, however, there will always be the justication of is it medically necessary or reasonable.

As a Licensed Agent, we are not allowed to speculate.

We can only interpret the Medicare rules when they are in place.

We can look at new plans after October 1st, once they are released for the next year,

We don't have anything to firmly suggest that the treatments WILL, or will NOT be added to the coverage levels currently provided.

The CMS is participating in a government model program that is optional for states and participating pharmaceutical companies. This model is projected to include more diseases in the future . So far, positive outcomes have been reported for Sickle Cell Anemia and there are hopes for ongoing introduction of more types of gene therapy.
