Q&A with Alan Gudis

Isn't Medicare Advantage just private health insurance? What is the difference?

Answer: Medicare Advantage is coordinated care between private health insurance companies and Medicare. Medicare Advantage takes over for your Medicare.

What are the signs that it's time for me to switch my Medicare plan, and how often should I review my options?

Answer: First, is it a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medicare Supplement/MediGap plan?

If it is a Medicare Supplement, then when the premium gets too high that you cannot afford it. You should contact an agent to get quotes from different companies with the same coverage. It could lower your premium substantially.

If it is a Medicare Advantage Plan, when the copays change or your doctors are no longer in the network.

Thank you,

I'm on Original Medicare with no supplement, and I'm wondering how much I'd pay if I need an ambulance ride to the hospital tomorrow.

Answer: You would pay 20% if you have not met the Part B deductible ($257 in 2025). You would meet that and then pay 20%. At the very least, take a $0 premium Medicare Advantage plan to cover most of that cost.

Isn't Medicare headed for a crisis with so many baby boomers aging into the system?

Answer: Yes, it is a concern because the Baby Boomer generation is putting significant pressure on Medicare due to the large number of Baby Boomers turning 65. Adults aged 65 and older are outnumbering children under 18. People are living longer.

The financial impact will see deductibles and premiums rise significantly.

Solutions could be adjusting eligibility and increasing payroll taxes.

What's the likelihood of Medicare covering gene therapy as it becomes more common?

Answer: This is strictly my opinion, but they are increasing the coverage. Medicare is trying to align with Medicaid, so I believe eventually there will be more coverage. Probably a 20% copay, like fusions and certain injections you receive from the doctor's office.

My neighbor says I'm crazy for paying for a Medigap plan when Medicare Advantage is "free." What should I tell him?

Answer: I would tell him that it is not free. Even though the premium may be $0, there are still co-pays. Most plans have an MOOP (Maximum Out-of-Pocket) limit for the year of $ 7,500 to $10,000. Therefore, it could potentially cost a significant amount.

What benefits are there to working with a Medicare Agent near me vs remote/virtual?

Answer: Some people are not confident discussing their Medicare via phone or virtually. Technology can be a stumbling block. Working face-to-face allows the agent to look you in the eye and should be able to tell that you are or are not understanding what is being said. It develops trust.
