What is the best way to compare Medicare plans for my parents?

Answered by 43 licensed agents

The best way is to contact an independent agent that is contracted with all the carriers in your area. The agents along with you and your parents can compare all plans and together find the plan that meets all your parents needs.

There are three thing to make sure that you are looking at and these are the minimum. Look at all doctors and hospitals and make sure they are in the network, 2. make sure all of your prescriptions are in the formulary, 3. make sure that the MOOT or maximum out of pocket cost is something that you can afford.

Secondary to that you want to make sure you are aware of the type of plan HMO, PPO, POS .

And then consider if you want an Advantage plan or a Medi gap plan. and then what plan he would

There are several ways to compare medicare plans for your parents. One common way to do this is to go directly to Medicare.gov and enter your zip code to compare Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans. You can also go directly to various Medicare Carrier's websites to do research on individual plans, including Medicare Supplements and their estimated monthly premiums. My recommendation would be to contact a local broker who is familiar with all plans in your area so they can do the research and compare for you. It is very important to consider your parent's prescriptions and their providers if you are considering a Medicare Advantage Plan and Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to ensure that they have the most comprehensive coverage possible. An independent local broker can collect this information for you and conduct the research, then you can also double check what they are sharing via the carriers site or direct with Medicare.gov. Lastly, this information will need to be shared directly with your parents, if they are their own legal representative. Best of luck!!

Meet with an agent face to face that represents several carriers. Make sure they're willing to come to you. They will need your permission to discuss current doctors, hospitals, prescription, medical conditions past or present, and any future planned medical events. You don't have to give them this information, but its going to make their job much easier. Each carrier treats this information differently in the way of coverage and/or underwriting. Even Medicare advantage plans that have no underwriting still have different copay structures and cover things differently among themselves. If they go right to plan presentation without asking for this information, find a new agent. Make sure they show you a few different plan options and the differences within each option. If they are only willing to show one carrier, find a new agent. Above all, do NOT do this over the phone.

Start with what actually matters to them. Not what sounds good in a commercial, not what their neighbor has, and definitely not what was pitched at a "free" dinner seminar.

You want to look at three main things:

1. Doctors and hospitals they want to keep.

2. Prescription drugs they take.

3. Budget: including both monthly premiums and total out-of-pocket costs when they actually use the plan.

From there, the best way to compare plans is by using real tools, not guesswork. Medicare.gov has a plan finder that can help, but honestly, it is only as good as the info you put in. Our tools are a lot more in-depth and easier to compare.

If you're not familiar with how Medicare works, it can get confusing fast. Comparing Supplements to Advantage plans, figuring out provider networks, and trying to read between the lines of what is actually covered can wear anyone out. Even people who do this every day get overwhelmed, so we get it.

When I helped my own mom, the key was starting with her doctors and medications, then working backward to find what fit. We didn’t just sort by lowest cost and hope for the best.

The best approach is to work with someone who knows the system and is willing to take the time to get it right. And if you are doing it yourself, do not rush. Look at multiple options.

Medicare mistakes are expensive and long-term. Fixing them later is a lot harder than doing it right the first time, so ask questions and ask them early.

Start with evaluation their health, no issues, a few chronic illnesses, or seriously ill at this time requiring expensive medications and procedures.

Next is general affordability. Can they afford a Medicare Supplement and Rx plan plus the part B premium, given the premium will rise 4 to 9 % per year.

Now consider a Medicare Advantage plan series.

Look at the available plans in your area. Check the top 3 companies available. Each plan benefits are arranged in the same format. Compare monthly premium if any, maximum out of pocket and so forth down the list. Compare Rx areas separately from medical. Now look at the non-medical benefits. After analysis now consider the company you may be familiar with from employment or with whom you are comfortable.

Find a trustworthy or highly recommended local agent and ask them to do thee same type of analysis. Now make your selection with confidence. Work with the local agent to enroll.

The best way of course to me is to make an appointment with the agent. They have knowledge that googling can not compare to. However, if you do not want to contact anyone, then you can go to Medicare.gov and put all of your information in. That should help and be somewhat accurate. I am having issues with clients of mine getting the right information on the prescription drug cost if it is a Tier 3-5 drug. I would call the company direct if they have expensive drugs.

The best way is to contact a licensed agent locally that can sit down with you and go through all of the plans to compare and make sure it fits the needs of the person. Just because a relative or a friend is on a plan doesn’t mean that plans’s going to fit your needs. The easiest way to compare Medicare plans for your parents is to start with the basics: their meds (with dosages), doctors, and pharmacy. That info helps you quickly narrow down which plans actually fit. From there, I’d recommend you have an independent agent pull side-by-side comparisons of multiple insurance carriers —don’t just look at premiums, but also networks, drug costs, specialist copays, and the max out-of-pocket.

If they want predictable costs, Medigap can give them peace of mind; if they’re comfortable with networks and copays, Medicare Advantage can work too.

There’s also a new, super simple guide coming out 12/2 called Helping Your Parents Navigate Medicare that walks through all of this in plain language.

I would advise talking with an agent.

Have the agent assess the current situational criteria necessary to advise your folks of the options available to them.

The options should be narrowed to just a couple to make selecting the right plan less confusing and more comfortable for your folks.

The right agent should be patient and not push to get a commitment or write an enrollment application.

The agent should not be more interested in receiving a commission than making certain your folks understand their options and are comfortable with their choices.

If the agent pushes, end the appointment and find a new agent.

Wishing you well with helping your folks.

So the question is, what is the best way to compare Medicare plans? The way I do it is the most unbiased way. I go to medicare.gov. You put in your zip code, and after you put in your zip code, it will ask if you get any extra help. If you do not get any extra help, you just put "No." It asks if you want to look up prescriptions. Of course, you want to look up prescriptions. So whatever prescriptions your parents are on or your family members are on, bring out the prescriptions, and you're gonna go to Medicare Advantage plans. You're gonna look up the plans. You're going to put in the prescriptions, and then by your zip code, it might come up with ten. It could come up with thirty-five. You just go through those plans and make sure it has RX so that you're getting a Medicare Advantage plan with prescriptions. And that's how you check. It's the most unbiased website, mostly up to date. So prescriptions are usually updated and in there. It will let you know you can pick three plans, and then it compares them for you. It tells you what you're going to pay and what your prescriptions are going to cost on that plan. And that's what I would do: medicare.gov.

The best way to clarify this question is by answering to initial points.

#1. Medicare is an individual program sponsored by the federal government. There are no group or family plans.

#2. If this is an initial entry into Medicare there are lots of options based on the individual's need for healthcare, distance to providers, and use of medication.

The simple answer is I would speak to an agent or broker in your local market who knows the local providers Hospital systems and medical groups. If that isn't available then I would reach out to a broker from the state or region who has the resources to determine and answer those questions for you.

Assuming they are not on Medicaid and are somewhat healthy, there are a couple of questions that you should ask first;

>Will they be traveling (i.e. do they need to be able to see a doctor in other states at any given time) or will they be sedentary in their local area?

>Do they like certainty in their healthcare costs or do are they OK with the under 65 type plans with co-insurance, copays, and deductibles?

Answers to both of these questions will determine if your parents should be in a Medigap plan or Medicare Advantage plan. Medigap plans are mostly the same in that they cover all doctors who accept Medicare throughout the USA and have some coverage outside of the USA. Medicare Advantage plans are particular to doctors nearby (not good for people who travel and want coverage outside of their area even in the same state) because doctors choose if they take the particular plan or not and most doctors are out of network.

There's a lot of information regarding these plans so it's best to talk with a broker since healthcare is the biggest expense in senior years, ESPECIALLY as people age and are in their "No Go" years.
