Q&A with Peter Jannetti
After a surgery, should I expect out-of-pocket costs?
Answer: This is a conversation you should have with your agent or your carrier. Some of your benefits through an advantage, supplemental, chronic illness or dual eligible plan may cover some, none or all of the costs.
Can you get Medicare if you never worked or didn't pay into the system?
Answer: You have to pay into the system for 10 years. This is also expressed as 40 quarters, each quarter is 3 months log.
I exercise regularly and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Does Medicare offer any incentives or additional benefits for preventive health behaviors?
Answer: Other than a once a year wellness exam some plans offer or that some plans have either a gym membership or silver sneakers I am not aware of any incentives or additional benefits.
Isn't it concerning that Medicare Advantage plans are taking over the system?
Answer: I believe the plans have gotten better, but Supplemental plans are also very popular. I’d look at both options before making a decision about your health care needs.
I picked the plan with the lowest premium, but now every doctor visit feels like a surprise bill. Should I have gone with a higher premium instead?
Answer: That depends on the plan. Is it a Medicare Supplement plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan? Just because the premium is lower doesn’t always warrant a bill from your doctor.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: A Medicare agent could answer the more difficult questions and help someone not make a mistake and lose benefits because they didn’t know they exist.
