I picked a Medicare Advantage plan last year, and I'm not sure if my hearing aids are covered. How do I figure this out?

Answered by 76 licensed agents

1. Call the member services phone number on the back of your card, and inquire as to how the hearing aid benefits work with your specific Advantage plan.

2. or, call the Agent/Broker who helped you enroll in the Advantage plan. He or she should be able to give you the main points of the hearing aid benefits and then point you to phone numbers for third party contractors who provide the hearing aid benefits to this plan.

3. or, obtain the EOC (Evidence of Coverage) pdf document that outlines in detail how all the benefits work, for your plan.

You should review your Medicare Advantage plan every year. Also, you should receive your ANOC letter ( Annual notice of change) in September of each year. Review that notice for any changes. I would recommend talking to a licensed Medicare agent, who can guide you to Understanding your options. As for hearing aids, they can differ with every Medicare Advantage plan.

Hi, thanks for watching. So the question here is someone picked the Medicare Advantage plan last year, and they want to make sure their hearing aids are covered. How do they figure all this out? Well, if you use a broker, hopefully a Medicare-only broker, you shouldn't have to figure it out. If you're my client, I should be your first call when you have any questions at all about your plan, whether it's a Medicare Advantage plan, Medicare Supplement, Medigap, whatever, we should be your first call.

But in terms of hearing aid coverage, most Medicare Advantage plans will have hearing aid coverage. And the benefit is really all over the map. Some coverages will pay for one year, actually two years each year with a copay, with a set copay. But honestly, when you really look at it closely, you're probably going to be better off going to Costco or Walmart, checking out their prices. And what I've learned with hearing aids is you get what you pay for. The cheaper the hearing aid, the least it's going to work. It's just built like that.

Your summary of benefits will list the extra benefits available in your plan. If Hearing Aids are included, they will be listed along with the copays you are responsible for. It will also tell you which hearing network you are required to use in order to receive the benefit. You can always call your broker or the Carrier for help.

Many but not all Medicare Advantage plans have hearing aid coverage. The best way to find out is to call the customer service number on your card and ask. If you go through a local agent, they should and should have gone over this with you when you signed up. That's the bonus of working with someone locally and in person. Never talk to the people cold calling or over the phone.

The best way I have found to find if a service or product is covered is by calling the insurance carrier directly. A lot of the “is this covered?” Questions come after a service or product has been purchased which makes things a little more difficult. Ask the carrier ahead of time if a certain hearing aid, dental procedure, durable medical equipment, etc.. is covered and at what in network facility?

I picked the Medicare Advantage plan last year, and I'm not sure if hearing aids will be covered. Many Medicare Advantage plans provide coverage for not only the screening and audiologist, but also an allowance for hearing aids. The best way to see that is to contact your insurance company. You can go to your online account or even medicare.gov and look up your plan and review that plan's Summary of Benefits or its Evidence of Coverage (EOC). Both of those documents will highlight what your potential coverage may be.

Now, for this reason, it's important to review your coverage annually. One plan may provide one set of benefits, while a different plan could offer more favorable coverage for you. Your opportunity to review that is annually during the Annual Enrollment Period from October 15th through December 7th. I hope that helps give some guidance. Until next time, be healthy and be well.

You have several ways of confirming this. First of all, hopefully you worked with a local broker who is able to provide continued support throughout the year. They should be able to help answer this question. You also should have received either a large book or a digital file of the plans EOC or Evidence of Coverage which will outline all benefits that your plan covers. This can be time consuming - but the information is there. Finally, on your member id card there is a customer service phone number. Depending on which carrier - this step will bring clarity quickly as a ambassador assists you, or you will find even more questions as you navigate the process. Again, hopefully you are using a local broker who believes in customer service - try them first.

To determine if your Medicare Advantage plan covers hearing aids, you need to review your plan's Evidence of Coverage (EOC), contact the plan directly, or use the Medicare Plan Finder tool. Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids or exams for fitting them, but some Medicare Advantage plans offer extra benefits that may include hearing aid coverage.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of how to find out:

1. Review your Evidence of Coverage (EOC):

This document outlines all the benefits, costs, and services covered by your specific Medicare Advantage plan. Look for specific details about hearing aid coverage, including what types of aids are covered, any limitations, and any associated costs.

2. Contact your plan directly:

You can call the plan's customer service number or visit their website for specific details about their hearing aid coverage.

3. Use the Medicare Plan Finder:

Medicare.gov provides a plan finder tool where you can input your zip code and filter by plan type (Medicare Advantage) to find plans in your area that offer hearing benefits. Look for plans with a green check mark indicating hearing benefits and then click on "Plan Details" to review specific coverage information.

4. Consider your Part B coverage:

While Original Medicare doesn't cover hearing aids themselves, Part B may cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams if ordered by your doctor.

5. Understand coverage limitations:

Even if your plan offers hearing aid coverage, there may be limitations, such as the number of hearing aids you can receive annually, the types of aids covered, or specific in-network providers you need to use.

By utilizing these resources, you can get a clear understanding of your Medicare Advantage plan's hearing aid coverage and determine if it meets your needs.

Check with your plan benefits. Usually there is a customer service number on the back of the card. In addition there is a number on the statements of benefits. You’re asking the right question—hearing aid coverage is one of the most misunderstood Medicare Advantage benefits.

Here’s how to figure it out step by step, without getting bounced around or sold something you don’t need.

Step 1: Check the Evidence of Coverage (EOC) — not the summary

Skip the glossy brochure. You want the Evidence of Coverage (EOC) for your exact plan and year.

How to find it:

Log into your plan’s member portal or

Google: “[Plan Name] Evidence of Coverage hearing aids”

Search inside the document for:

“Hearing aids”

“Audiology”

“Hearing services”

This tells you what’s actually covered.

Step 2: Look for these 5 key details

When you find the hearing section, check:

Is it hearing exams only, or actual hearing aids?

(Many plans only cover exams.)

Coverage amount

Examples:

“Up to $1,000 every 2 years”

“One hearing aid per ear every 3 years”

“Discount program only” (this is NOT true coverage)

Approved providers

Many plans require:

A specific vendor (like TruHearing, NationsHearing, HearUSA)

An in-network audiologist

Prior authorization required?

Often yes.

Brand or model limits

Some plans cap you at basic technology levels.

Step 3: Call the plan — but ask the right questions

When you call the number on the back of your card, ask exactly this:

“Can you tell me my hearing aid benefit, including dollar amount, frequency, required vendors, and whether prior authorization is needed?”

Ask them to:

Email or mail the benefit summary

Confirm whether your current audiologist is in-network

💡 Write down the date, name, and reference number of the call.

Step 4: Talk to your audiologist before buying anything

Your hearing provider can:

Verify benefits

Check vendor restrictions

Tell you if your plan’s benefit will actually apply

Many people lose coverage because they bought aids before confirming the plan rules.

One important reality check

Even with “coverage,” many Medicare Advantage plans:

Only partially pay for hearing aids

Look at your Summary of Benefits. It should list all your coverage details. If you can't put your hands on it, call the customer service number on your ID card to have them send another. Good to keep it handy for reference.

Happy to help!

It all depends on the plan you have - but it will be in the materials you received from the plan, and/or your agent.

Look for your Summary of Benefits and the Evidence of Coverage - those are two important documents to reference.

If you tell me your zip code and full plan name - I can look in the quoting system to see what those benefits are for 2025, and 2026.

You should be able to check your summary of benefits, and find out in there, or you can call your carrier direct and ask them.
