Does Medicare cover Alzheimer's disease treatment?

Answered by 9 licensed agents

Original Medicare with or without a supplement will cover everything your doctor says is medically necessary - so it is up to your doctor if you need treatment.

Medicare does cover some services for Alzheimer’s patients—such as doctor visits, hospital stays, and diagnostic tests—but generally does not pay for long-term "custodial care" (bathing, dressing, 24/7 supervision) in assisted living or nursing homes. Coverage includes Alzheimer's disease diagnosis, mental health care, and some home health services, with prescription coverage available through Part D

Yes, Medicare does cover many aspects of Alzheimer’s disease treatment, but coverage depends on the type of care, medication, and stage of the disease.

Coverage depends on the service involved. Visits with doctors, neurologists, cognitive testing, brain scans are typically covered. Prescription medications can be very helpful and are covered if mild cognitive or early stage Alzheimers is diagnosed. Medicare however does not cover long term custodial care like a memory care facility which is one of the largest challenges families face. Resources are available for further understanding of this devastating disease.

Yes Medicare would cover you seeing a specialist and testing involved. A prescription drug plan should also cover medications wit possible copays for the treatment of Alzheimer’s.

Medicare covers medical services such as doctor visits, diagnostic testing, in hospital stays and care planning. However, Medicare does not cover long term care, the 24/7 coverage that may be needed nor nursing home.

Yes, Medicare will cover Part A - inpatient hospital stays,

Medicare Part B will cover outpatient Dr appointments and diagnostic testing.

Medicare D - Drug coverage will offer prescription drugs used to manage the symptoms.

Part B services will be subjected to a deductible and costs for medications will vary.

However, Medicare will not cover Long-term care in nursing home or assisted living facilities.

In short, yes. Medicare focuses on medical treatment and diagnostic support of Alzheimer's disease. It does not provide daily living assistance ultimately required in advanced stages of the disease.

In brief, Medicare Part B will cover:

• Cognitive Assessments: Included in an "Annual Wellness Visit" to track memory loss.

• Specialist Visits: Covers appointments with neurologists and geriatricians.

• Diagnostic Imaging: Covers MRI, CT, and certain PET scans (used to confirm a diagnosis).

• Care Planning: A dedicated visit to create a roadmap for treatment and support.

• Mental Health: Psychotherapy and counseling for the patient.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drugs)

• Symptom Management: Covers standard drugs used to treat Alzheimer's disease

• Disease-Modifying Drugs: Covers newer infusion drug therapies if the prescribing doctor participates in a registry to track outcomes.

• 2026 Benefit: Total drug costs will be capped at $2,100 for the year.

Facility & Home Care (Part A & B)

• Home Health: Covers medically necessary part-time skilled nursing or physical therapy if the patient is "homebound". It is important to remember, Medicare does not cover 24/7 care, it does not cover custodial care (e.g. activities of daily living, bathing, dressing, eating).

• Skilled Nursing: Covers up to 100 days of rehab in a facility following a 3-day hospital stay.

• Durable Medical Equipment: Pays 80% for hospital beds, walkers, and wheelchairs used at home.

• Hospice: Fully covers end-of-life care, including pain management and grief support.
