Does Medicare cover memory assessments or neurologist visits?

Answered by 10 licensed agents

Yes Medicare covers neurologist visits and cognitive testing requested by those physicians. Neurologists are specialists so they are covered based on the type of plan you have, a Supplement or an Advantage plan.

Keep in mind that Medicare DOES NOT pay for memory care, or Long Term Care.

Under Part B, when assessments are considered medically necessary and ordered by your doctor to check for issues like Dementia or Alzheimers they would be covered. Also Neurologist visits are covered under Part B as long as the provider you are seeing accepts Medicare. Note that if you are under a Medicare Advantage plan, your visits are still covered, but your copays and network requirements may vary so check with your plan.

Basic memory assessments are covered through the annual Preventative care visit. Neurological visits are covered as Specialist visits, usually with a copay.

Yes — Medicare covers both memory assessments and neurologist visits. Cognitive screenings are included in preventive services, and medically necessary neurologist visits are covered under Part B.

Medicare does cover memory assessments and neurologist visits.

• A full memory assessment is covered when your doctor thinks it’s medically necessary (often done during a cognitive evaluation).

• Neurologist visits are covered under Medicare Part B as long as the provider accepts Medicare.

• If any scans or tests are needed, those are usually covered too when ordered by the doctor.

What a great question. Whether a memory check or neurologist visit is covered can depend on whether the service is considered preventive or diagnostic, and that can vary from person to person.

Because everyone’s health needs are different, and Medicare plans can work differently, it’s important to talk with your medical team about what services are appropriate for you.

You can also contact the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) at 1‑800‑633‑4227 (TTY 1‑877‑486‑2048) to get official information about what Medicare may cover in your situation.

Yes, Medicare Part B generally covers visits needed for memory assessments or neurologists' visits. It should be noted that a costs including co-pay, co-insurance and/or deductibles can apply. These costs may be offset with a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plan.

Hi, I’m Heather Currier and I would be happy to answer that for you. Medicare Part B does cover memory/cognitive assessments and visits to a neurologist when they are medically necessary, but you may owe deductibles and coinsurance. Exact out‑of‑pocket costs depend on whether you have Original Medicare only, a Medigap supplement, or a Medicare Advantage plan.

A neurologist would be considered a specialist. So yes, most likely with a copay for specialists. And a memory assessment is part of your annual wellness visit which is covered under Medicare for $0, along with other wellness visit checks.
