Not eligibility. There are various enrollment periods where people can join and leave a plan. What depends on where a person lives is the plans themselves. The plans vary from region to region. The “why” of that needs to be asked of the companies designing the plans.

Medicare Advantage plans are approved and offered on a county by county basis, meaning the plans available to you depend entirely on where you live. Someone in a major metropolitan area may have dozens of plan options to choose from, while someone in a rural county may have very few or in some cases none at all. This also means that if you move to a different county or state you trigger a Special Enrollment Period and need to find a new plan, because your current Medicare Advantage plan likely will not follow you to your new address. Plan benefits, premiums, and networks can vary significantly from one county to the next even within the same state and with the same carrier. If you are considering relocating, it is worth researching what Medicare Advantage options are available in your destination area before you move so you are not caught off guard by a limited selection or a plan that does not meet your needs.

In short: Yes/ The Medicare Advantage plans you are able to choose from are based on your residential address. You cannot apply to plans that are not offered in your area.

Yes.

Medicare Advantage plans are county-based. Availability depends on your ZIP code.

• Each plan has a defined service area.

• Benefits and premiums vary by county.

• Provider networks are local.

If you move outside the plan’s service area, you must switch plans.

Yes, Medicare Advantage plans are strictly tied to your zip code and county. While the government’s "Original Medicare" works the same nationwide, Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private companies and are restricted to specific service areas.

Good morning! The question is, can eligibility for certain Medicare Advantage plans depend on where I live? The answer, in a nutshell, is 100% yes. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance carriers. Each one of those carriers has a specific zip code or area that they allow enrollment in. So you could have people next door, neighbors in fact, who may be within or adjacent cities but live in different zip codes. Those zip codes determine whether or not you are eligible for that specific insurance carrier's plan. I hope that answers your question. Look forward to talking to you soon. Take care!

Yes, Medicare Advantage Plans are defined by county. Although many carriers offer similar plans in most areas, the specific plan name, benefit and cost structure as well as provider networks will differ by County.

Yes. Medicare Advantage plans are based on county by county. You are only eligible for plans that are available in your county. Some rural counties have no options for Medicare Advantage plans.

Medicare advantage plans eligibility is partially based on the county where you reside. You also have to have to have Medicare parts A and B active. Based on the county where you live you’ll be able to select any plan that is available in that county. It is extremely important to understand your options when selecting a plan. Plans vary greatly from plan to plan. If you need guidance contact a professional like myself. We do not charge for our services and can help you understand your options.

All Medicare Advantage plans are dependent on where you live. As an example, if you live in Harrisburg, PA and enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan serving Harrisburg, and later move to Richmond, Virginia, you will need to change your Medicare Advantage plan to one that services Richmond. If this occurs there is a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that begins and gives you time to conduct the Plan transition so you maintain adequate medical coverage.

That is correct. Medicare Advantage plans have certain plans for certain counties. I recommend consulting with your broker or visiting Medicare.gov to see what's available in your county.

Yes — eligibility for Medicare Advantage plans can absolutely depend on where you live.

Here’s why location matters:

Medicare Advantage plans are county-based

Medicare Advantage plans are approved and offered by county, not statewide or nationwide. That means a plan available in one county may not exist in the neighboring one.

Provider networks are local

Most Medicare Advantage plans use local doctor and hospital networks (especially HMOs and PPOs). If you live outside the service area, the plan can’t guarantee access to in-network care, so you wouldn’t be eligible.

Benefits and costs vary by area

Premiums, copays, extra benefits (like dental, vision, transportation, or fitness), and even plan types can change based on your ZIP code or county.

Moving can affect your plan

If you move to a different county or state:

Your current Medicare Advantage plan may no longer be available

You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to choose a new plan

Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare

Original Medicare works the same nationwide, but Medicare Advantage plans are location-specific, which is a key difference to keep in mind if you travel or relocate often.

Medicare Advantage plans are available by state and the actual county of your residence. Plans can vary by county from year-to-year. It is important to always review your summary of benefit notice sent out in early October to see if your plan is changing a portion of benefits or may be terminating benefits in your locality.
