Q&A with Norma Rector
Can eligibility for certain Medicare Advantage plans depend on where I live?
Answer: Medicare Advantage plans are available by state and the actual county of your residence. Plans can vary by county from year-to-year. It is important to always review your summary of benefit notice sent out in early October to see if your plan is changing a portion of benefits or may be terminating benefits in your locality.
I start Medicare in 2026 and a one-time 401(k) withdrawal in 2024 placed me in the second IRMAA tier for part of that year. When should I file Form SSA-44 so my 2027 premium returns to the lowest tier?
Answer: IRMAA premium adjustments occur at the beginning of each calendar on January 1st. The extra premium for any Part D drug plan benefit and Medicare Part B premium resets each January and has a two-year lookback period on your tax return filed previously. It is based upon your tax filing status (single or married) and total modified adjusted household income of the two-year prior filed tax return year.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Typically, Medicare agents and agent/brokers can assist you with making a proper analysis of your unique prescription drug preferences, as well as a cost analysis. Save money and save time by working with a licensed and certified agent.
What is the main benefit of Medicare Part D?
Answer: Medicare Part D Rx drug benefit is a required component of your overall Medicare benefit package for retail drug benefits and prescription mail order benefits. A Medicare beneficiary is required to enroll in a creditable prescription drug program if they do not have access to an employer group plan with creditable drug benefits. You can make a new annual selection for a new plan each fall from October 15 thru December 7th. Important to run a prescription drug analysis to find the right one for you.
