I have a family history of colon cancer. Will Medicare cover more frequent colonoscopies for someone in my situation?

Answered by 39 licensed agents

If someone is deemed to be at high risk for colon cancer, Medicare will cover frequent colonoscopies every 2 years. Your doctor or other health care provider may recommend you get services more often than Medicare covers. An additional plan such as a Medicare Supplement or a Medicare Advantage can provide such additional coverage.

Come in. I have a family history of colon cancer. Will Medicare cover more frequent colonoscopies for someone in my situation?

Yes. Anything that's medically necessary, then you're on original Medicare. Even maybe even on a Medicare Advantage plan will be covered by Medicare. But it has to be medically necessary.

So when it comes to colonoscopies, if your doctor or the specialist you're seeing recommends a more frequent visit and colonoscopy, yes, Medicare will cover that.

The best thing to do is sit down with a licensed Medicare agent and review your options. Understand what plans are available in your area. I hope this answers your question.

If you have a family history of colon cancer, this includes a parent, sibling or child who has had colorectal cancer or an adenomatous polyp, then yes you would be considered high risk and Medicare could pay for a screening every 24 months. The regular schedule is once every 120 months.

Yes, under Medicare A & B, you may find that Medicare will cover your screening potentially every two years, under a doctor's order. Preventive care testing is offered as a separate rider with your Medigap programs, with some insurance carriers. These additional rider programs generally cover one hundred percent of the cost if classified as preventive care screening.

Yes — Medicare does consider family history of colon cancer when it comes to how often you can get a screening colonoscopy covered. If you’re at high risk because of a first-degree relative (parent, sibling, or child )with colon cancer, Medicare will cover a screening colonoscopy once every 2 years instead of the standard once every 10 years for average-risk people. However, it’s important that your provider documents the high-risk status in the medical record and on the claim — otherwise Medicare may apply the average-risk schedule. Also, if your doctor orders a colonoscopy because you have symptoms or other medical reasons other than just routine screening, Medicare may cover that as a diagnostic colonoscopy, which is paid differently than routine screening. Always talk with your provider and confirm that the high-risk screening code will be used, so Medicare processes it correctly.

Yes, once every 24 months (or once every 2 years) if you have a family history of colon cancer, you would be considered a high risk individual, and be covered for a colonoscopy as frequently as every 24 months. Without the family history or otherwise high risk factor, Medicare covers getting a colonoscopy as a preventative service, every 120 months (or every 10 years) for average risk individuals.

Yes, the rule is that you are entitled to a colonoscopy for free every ten years. However, with a familial incidence of colon cancer, it can be sped up to every five years or even sooner. This would depend upon your own state’s laws.

Yes.

Medicare covers screening colonoscopies once every 24 months if you’re at high risk for colorectal cancer. If you aren’t at high risk, Medicare covers the test once every 120 months, or 48 months after a previous flexible sigmoidoscopy. There’s no minimum age requirement.

If you initially have a non-invasive stool-based screening test (fecal occult blood tests or multi-target stool DNA test) and receive a positive result, Medicare also covers a follow-up colonoscopy as a screening test.

Yes, your gastroenterologist will determine the frequency of colonoscopies that will be required for you. Medicare will cover that with either co-insurance, or a co-pay, depending on whether you stay on original Medicare, or choose an Advantage plan. All Advantage plans, by law, cover what Medicare covers.

Higher risk: Your doctor will recommend a more frequent schedule based on your specific situation. This can include:

Every 2-5 years for those with certain polyps, a history of inflammatory bowel disease, or a family history of colorectal cancer.

Every 7-10 years if you have no symptoms and no family history, starting at age 45.

Hello, Robert. I'm Remin, an expert Medicare Plan Advisor, licensed and Medicare and carrier certified in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Florida. Yes, Medicare will allow you to have colonoscopies more frequently than the usual time range they allow. Most likely, we will need a note from your doctor stating that there is a history of colon cancer in the family. You submit that letter to the carrier before you have the colonoscopy so you don't wind up with a bill for it. If you have additional questions about this, please reach out.

Yes, Medicare does cover more frequent colonoscopies if you’re considered high risk and a family history of colon cancer usually puts you in that category. High‑risk individuals can get a screening colonoscopy every 24 months, and Medicare pays the full cost as long as it’s done as a screening. So you don’t have to wait the full 10 years like someone at average risk.
