Q&A with Samuel Deter
What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?
Answer: There is a lot of confusion and misinformation about Medicare. I enjoy helping people understand the different options and finding them the plan that best fits their individual needs.
What's the trade-off between a Medicare Advantage PPO and HMO when it comes to flexibility?
Answer: A PPO plan usually provides the most flexibility of choosing the doctors and facilities you want to use but can have higher cost and less benefits. HMO's can have lower cost and better benefits but I rarely recommend them because of the limitation of choosing providers. However, a PPO-POS can provide the best of both options.
I've been diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 66. How should I structure my Medicare coverage to ensure I get the mental health care I need?
Answer: The first step would be to determine if there a C-SNP for bipolar disorder in your area that includes any providers you are not willing to change. If not, it would be necessary to review available plans find the one that best meets your mental health needs.
I'm a smoker trying to quit. What smoking cessation benefits does Medicare offer for someone in my situation?
Answer: Medicare part B will cover two counseling attempts per year and part D plans will cover certain prescriptions to help. However, there are Medicare Advantage plans that provide additional support for someone that is trying to quit using tobacco.
Don't you think Medicare will eventually be privatized completely?
Answer: I personally don't think Medicare will ever be completely privatized but also don't think it matters at this point. Each person currently has the ability to review the Medicare options each year and make a change if there is a better option for them. That freedom re-evaluate and make a choice every year is what is most important. Unfortunately, a lot of people to don't take advantage of their freedom to review the options and fail to make a change when a better option is available.
I have a family history of colon cancer. Will Medicare cover more frequent colonoscopies for someone in my situation?
Answer: Medicare will cover a colonoscopy every two years for someone that is considered high risk, such as someone with a family history of colon cancer. For individuals that are not considered high risk, a colonoscopy is covered every 10 years.
