Why do people say Medicare Advantage plans are bad?

Answered by 7 licensed agents

Most people don't say Medicare Advantage plans are bad. Medicare advantage plans are designed to keep you healthy, live longer and stay active. One of the complaints is a few things.

1. MAPD plans are not accepted by specialty places like MAYO clinic, original Medicare is accepted.

2. There are network rules, original Medicare does not.

3. Many MAPD plans require a referral to see a specialist. Original Medicare does not.

They are not bad. They are good. They come with many benefits that original Medicare does not.

Medicare Advantage plans are not for everyone. A person who can afford the monthly plan premiums in addition to their Part B premiums may prefer a Medicare Supplement that has one annual deductible, then pays the 20% of costs that original Medicare does not cover. Medicare Advantage plans have copays and deductibles. Carriers may deny treatment or require a person to see in-network doctors. But most combine prescription drug coverage and other benefits such as dental, vision or hearing. This is why it's important to seek advice from a Medicare specialist who can guide you in choosing the plan that's the right fit instead of listening to friends and neighbors who may be biased.

The biggest reason is that Advantage plans are based on networks of providers.

This means that if you have an Advantage HMO plan and you go to a provider out of their network, you will not have coverage.

If you have an Advantage PPO plan and you go out of network, you will pay a higher co-pay, out of pocket.

If your healthcare providers are in the network, Advantage plans may be the way to go. About 50% of Medicare beneficiaries have Advantage plans.

People dislike Medicare Advantage plans because they have strict provider networks, require prior-authorization for treatments and can have higher maximum out of pockets.
