I've heard Medicare Advantage plans have hidden costs. How do I know what I'm really getting?

No, there should not be any hidden costs in your Medicare Advantage plan. All copays, coinsurance, deductibles, and other cost-sharing are outlined in the plan's Summary of Benefits (SOB), which every plan is required to provide.

To fully understand what you're getting, it's also important to review the plan's Evidence of Coverage (EOC), which provides detailed information about your benefits, coverage rules, and out-of-pocket costs.

Where confusion sometimes arises is with the cost-sharing of the supplemental benefits such as dental, vision, and hearing coverage. While these benefits are included in many plans, they often have coverage limits, copays, coinsurance, or annual maximums that aren't always understood.

You should not have any hidden costs in your Advantage plan. All the copays and coinsurances are listed in the plan. Any hidden cost is because the plan was not explained well or it is not a straight financial cost. Some people consider having to utilize a network of providers and getting referrals as hidden costs. Having the insurance company require prior authorization before certain procedures can be a hidden cost.

If someone is talking about a cost, clarify if they are talking about a dollar amount or the time and effort they had to put into receiving care. The carriers are usually very clear on dollar amounts for services, but less clear on what is required to get the care.

Every plan is required to provide a clear Summary of Benefits outlining costs, and I walk through this line by line with every client so there are no surprises. Transparency is a big part of how I work, especially since I know trust in health coverage doesn't come automatically.

The reality is that Medicare Advantage plans don't have "hidden" costs, but they do have cost-sharing that many people don't fully understand before enrolling. The key is knowing where and when you'll pay.

Medicare Advantage (MA) plans can feel like they have “hidden costs” because they bundle Part A, B, and usually D coverage with extras, but the details (networks, rules, and out-of-pocket expenses) vary widely by plan.
