If I don't have a primary physician will my new carrier assign me to one?

Answered by 10 licensed agents

Some Medicare Advantage plans may automatically assign you a primary care doctor if you do not choose one when you enroll. In many cases, you can change that doctor later if you prefer someone else. Original Medicare does not require you to select a primary care doctor. It is always a good idea to review the doctors available in a plan’s network before enrolling.

Yes. You typically can change that after 24 hours, and most carriers limit the number of times you can change, but they want you to have one that you like, so they work with you.

On an HMO policy, yes, the carrier will automatically assign you a primary physician. On a PPO policy, a primary physician is not needed, so one will not be assigned. I can assist you in finding a primary physician if you do choose a Medicare Advantage PPO.

Yes, a primary care physician will be assigned if you have Medicare Advantage plan HMO or HMO-POS plan. You can always change providers with the plan anytime throughout the year.

I would ask your agent to find a PCP near you that accepts your insurance. I volunteer to find a PCP for my new clients that don't already have one. It's easy for me as an agent to find a good PCP for my because I have the necessary tools for locating PCP's near my clients.

It depends on the plan you pick. HMOs require selecting a primary physician when applying, or one will be auto-assigned, whereas PPOs don't have the same requirement.

Depending on the plan. Some plan required a primary care be assigned. If you don't select one they will assign one.

If you have a Medicare Advantage HMO plan and you didn't pick a plan at the time of enrollment, the carrier will pick one for you. Take into consideration that it may not be the one you want or currently have.

If you have a Medicare Supplement, you don't need to pick a primary care doctor.

Yes — in many cases, if you enroll into certain Medicare plans, especially HMO plans, the insurance carrier may automatically assign you a Primary Care Physician (PCP) if you do not select one during enrollment.

However, you usually still have the ability to change your assigned doctor afterward if you would prefer someone else who is in-network and accepting new patients. I always recommend reviewing the provider network carefully to make sure the doctor, specialists, hospitals, and medical groups are a good fit for your healthcare needs and location.

I also partner with senior-focused healthcare networks and medical groups that offer strong support for Medicare beneficiaries, including access to quality primary care physicians, quicker new-patient appointments, coordinated specialist care, wellness resources, and senior activities. My goal is not only to help clients select a plan, but also help connect them with healthcare resources and support systems that can improve their overall experience and quality of care.
