Q&A with Jeffrey Miller
If I don't have a primary physician will my new carrier assign me to one?
Answer: Yes. You typically can change that after 24 hours, and most carriers limit the number of times you can change, but they want you to have one that you like, so they work with you.
Do I really need help in figuring out what's best for me as for as Medicare Planning?
Answer: Need is not the operative word. Would you benefit from it? Yes, it would be hard not to. You aren’t experienced and you don’t have Liability coverage. You also can’t be as well versed and educated on someone who does this every day for one or two decades.
If you still think that you are smart enough and maybe you want to save time, even then I would call an area broker and say “I want to spend as little time on this as possible and here are my selections.” You’ll be amazed at how easy it can be.
At the very least you will have someone else available to you in case a problem occurs in processing, initial claims, etc. After enrolling, just ansk out of his marketing, and tell the broker you’ll call them if you need them.
What is one Medicare trend that you believe is having a positive impact on Medicare affordability? How is it making a difference?
Answer: The best thing to help affordability is the emphasis on prevention. If we can treat an existing condition, it helps to keep people out of the expensive treatment arenas, such as ER visits, Ambulance rides and trauma ICU’s.
My Medicare Advantage plan listed my doctor, but now they say he's out of network. How is that even allowed?
Answer: Your doctor or the MA plan have the right to enter into and exit contracts independent of your selection of MA plans. If this concerns you, you will want the highest star- rated MA plans with a provider that is also happy with the carrier. Find an MA carrier that has 95% of your area physicians in it, and you will not likely have an issue.
What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?
Answer: I actually love the age group. So nice, so easy to deal with compared to commercial group buyers.
I’ve dealt with both- commercial buyers are not concerned w the actual program.
My Advantage plan says I need a referral just to see a dermatologist. I thought PPOs didn't require that - was I wrong?
Answer: I believe you are mistaken. My bet is that the doctor office requires it, not the PPO.
Most HMO’s have the ability to require this but many don’t.
