Get your Medicare right!

Find Original Medicare and the best Supplement/Medigap plan available to you. You are then “Grandfathered” into the system, and they cannot take it from you or change the coverage on you. Only if your Medigap plan is in Group Coverage, and they change or cancel the plan. So find a provider who offers an individual plan, not a group plan.

The best way to prepare is to review your plan’s coverage rules, provider network, and prior authorization requirements before making changes. Ask your doctor which treatments you may need in the future and confirm they are covered under your Medicare plan. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, verify that your specialists, hospitals, and medications are all in-network and on the formulary. For ongoing or complex conditions, some people prefer Original Medicare with a Medigap plan because it offers broader provider access and fewer coverage restrictions.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid services sets the rules that the insurance carriers must follow. This is a benefit for the consumer because it sets medically appropriate guidelines so that the public can be sure that their medical needs will be met by their insurance provider. This should provide the public with a sense of confidence that their future treatments will be covered in a safe and appropriate manner!

Your question needs more specificality. As to a treatment or procedure, Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage plans must cover all the procedures and treatments that Medicare covers.

If you men prescriptions, the each plan publishes an ANOC, Annual Notice of Change. In that document the benefits and drug coverage for the next year are listed. Italso lists of changes to the plan and benefits.

Working with a local agent or your Agent of Record can help you.

Every year, you should speak with a licensed and local Medicare agent/advocate who is knowledgeable about your state's plans. They should review your plan to make sure your cover is keeping up with your lifestyle and changing health needs.

All Medicare Supplements and Advantage plans must cover everything that Medicare covers. If it's a Medicare covered procedure, the plans will pay for it.

Medigap plans are the easiest to work with in this situation. No networks, no referrals, and possibly no deductibles. If Medicare covers the procedure, the gap plan will cover it.

Medicare Advantage plans are a little more difficult to use. Sometimes they require a prior authorization before a procedure can be done. Think of it like your group plan from work.

I hope that helps you.

You should understand the coverage that is provided for the different Medicare coverage plans which are: a Medicare Advantage plan, or a Medicare Supplement, or Original Medicare only. It is important to understand the deductibles, co-payments, and maximum out of pocket costs that you would incur with each of these plans. If you understand the coverage details of each of these plans you will understand what is the maximum amount of out of pocket cost you would incur per year for each of these plans.

Medicare plans cover most medical illnesses as well as have multiple

preventative features that clients can get for zero cost. This includes surgeries and prescription medications. If you are on a Medicare Supplement plan all of your medical needs will be covered after you pay the annual deductible which for 2026 is estimated to be $288.

I tell my clients that when selecting their plan, they should consider what is most important to them, whether they want the lowest price. For some who have a family history of say Cancer, or some other chronic disease, and just haven't had issues yet ... they may want a more comprehensive plan and are willing to pay those costs. Purpose is why it is so important during AEP to work with a licensed Professional Agent to allow them to help you see your available options that meet your specific needs or purpose for coverage!

The best advice I can give without knowing the specifics of your plan or benefits is to look at your specific summary of benefits if you are on an Advantage plan or have supplemental coverage. I think you should call 1-800-MEDICARE for general guidance or to confirm enrollment. You can also use the tools on Medicare.gov search “Plan Finder” on Medicare.gov with your ZIP code and plan name to view details, or create a MyMedicare account for personalized coverage info.

Easiest way would be to call the number on the back of your Medicare card (Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan) and ask them if your illness is covered.

To make sure your Medicare plan will cover future treatments for your illnesses, it is important to review your health plan with your agent annually. Your agent may be able to guide you to other optional supplemental benefits that can help pay the costs of cancer treatments or hospital stays. It is also important to stay on top of your health with your doctors. Some insurance carriers also offer extra rewards for completing your annual wellness visits with your doctors and getting your annual vaccines.
