Do Medicare brokers charge seniors a fee, or is their help free?

Answered by 9 licensed agents

Medicare brokers or agents should not be charging anyone a fee. They are paid by the Medicare carrier. Monetarily speaking, it isn't a large amount of money and every carrier pays the same amount so there should be no reason for a broker or agent to push one policy over another. This should be your choice based on your needs.

Some brokers may charge fees, however, they must discuss payment up front. As a broker, I personally do not charge seniors a fee for services, but everyone is different. I would ask up front before meeting with any broker if you are concerned about fees.

Medicare brokers should never charge a consultation fee. The reason is that they are compensated by insurance companies if you choose one of the products the broker represents. They should always be upfront about this, it's an ethics violation if they charge you.

Medicare brokers and agents are generally paid by insurance companies, not by the people they help. Using a broker or assistance in choosing a Medicare plan does not cost the beneficiaries any additional money.

What a great question. I get asked this often. No.... we don't charge a fee. Our compensation comes from the carriers. We are just there to help you figure out what plan will work for you! Isn't that great!

Let me clear this up, because there’s a lot of misinformation out there.

No—Medicare brokers do NOT charge seniors a fee for their help.

If you sit down with me, call me, text me, ask a hundred questions… you’re not getting a bill. Period.

So how does that work?

We’re paid by the insurance companies, not by you. When you enroll in a plan, the carrier pays the agent a commission that’s already built into the plan. It does not increase your premium, and it’s the same whether you use an agent or go direct.

Now here’s the part people don’t always think about…

If you go online and enroll yourself… or call a 1-800 number…

you’re still paying for that commission—you’re just not getting the guidance that comes with it.

You can do this alone…

or you can have someone walk it with you, answer your questions, fix problems, and make sure you’re actually in the right plan…for the exact same cost.

And I don’t disappear after you enroll.

When something looks off, when a bill doesn’t make sense, when you get one of those “Medicare letters” that makes your head spin… that’s when you call me.

At the end of the day, you’re not paying for a broker…

but you absolutely benefit from having one on your side.

Some Medicare brokers are moving to a Fee based practice. Most brokers don't charge a fee and are paid by the insurance company. Brokers are paid to service the policy by doing field underwriting and are responsible for helping clients with questions and problems.
