What are the worst Medicare Supplement insurance companies to avoid?

Answered by 11 licensed agents

At this point, I'm sure you have heard about rising cost of premiums across Medicare Supplements. I wouldn't say that there are certain companies to avoid; however, I think there are certain carriers that are more favorable in certain markets. You can start by looking at what's available in your market.

If you want to learn more about certain carriers, historical performance, and want help identifying the best solution and carrier for your market, a licensed Medicare Agent will be a great resource for you and will help avoid some of the pitfalls.

For our clients, we complete a comprehensive review and access market analytics on the carrier, plans, and historical performance and share that information with clients as a means to educate, empower, and inspire clients to make informed decisions. The end goal is to enroll in a plan with carrier that is stable and has more predictable performance to avoid the drastic rate swings each year. The coverage is regulated at the federal level and the coverage is the same for ALL carriers, regardless of the logo.

You can also find great information on Medicare.gov and the FREE GUIDE, Choosing a Medigap policy. It has a lot of great information and key concepts to consider when you are selecting a plan and carrier.

There usually isn’t a “worst” Medicare Supplement company in terms of coverage, because the plans themselves are standardized by Medicare. A Plan G is a Plan G no matter which company you buy it from, and Medicare is the one approving claims, not the supplement company. What really matters is picking a carrier that’s more likely to keep rate increases reasonable over time, even if they aren’t the absolute cheapest upfront. A good local broker should have enough experience with the various plans to let you know which ones to avoid.

That bait with extremely low initial enrollment premiums and later have a significant large rate increase. Be sure and ask your agent about the rate increases for the carrier .

This is a question that agents are not going to be allowed to answer outright. For Supplemental (Medigap) policies, there is 1 company in particular I will not write a Supplement plan through but I love them for a different line of coverage. Talk to a licensed agent and you can get some good recommendations for companies as well as estimates on cost.

As a broker, we can’t use superlatives like “best” and “worst,” but I can tell you that Plan G or N is the same regardless of the carrier you choose. However, you should focus on the premium rates charged by each carrier. I usually recommend the lowest-cost rates for my clients.

Always look for A rating or better (A.M. Best). You want a company that's going to be around awhile.

Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are graded every year using a 1–5 (5 being the highest rating) star rating system by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services—think of it as a report card for plan quality.

Use these ratings to help guide you to the better plans that are available.

As an independent broker that represents most carriers in the state of Florida, I can not and will not answer this question. As long as the carriers are licensed to sell in the state of Florida, you will see their financial ratings, reviews, rate history, etc... and determine with the help of you agent/broker what plan is best for you

When looking for a Medicare Supplement you want a company that has been in the industry for awhile and they have a 4 star rating or above.

When it comes to Medicare supplement companies.. Medicare supplements they're all created equal so the ones that I used to go with are the ones that are priced fairly and have a reputation of not having high rate increases annually.
