How can I check if my prescription drug is covered before enrolling in a Medicare Part D plan?

Answered by 6 licensed agents

Medicare.gov has a great tool that helps people find this information. Use their Medicare Plan finder tool to help with this task. Plans are sorted by zip code. Make sure to have your prescription information available with you when going through the tool on the website.

Add your specific medications with their dosages and frequencies, and select your preferred pharmacy to see which plans cover your drugs and estimate your total yearly costs. You can also look at multiple pharmacies to compare and find the lowest prices. A Preferred Pharmacy label may mean lower costs than a strandard pharmacy,

The tool will then show which private Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage plans cover your medications and estimate your costs. You can sort the information by lowest premium and drug costs combined. You will also see the plan deductible (if there is one) and a breakdown for costs ane where the drugs fall on the plan formulary.

Checking medications is a crucial part of the plan selection process. Not having access to medications, or a preferred pharmacy is one of the biggest pain points I see with Medicare beneficiaries every year. Often times costing headaches and extra money every time you refill a prescription.

The quickest and easiest way to do the research on your own is to utilize the tools on medicare.gov by finding the plan you are considering enrolling into, and adding your prescription, dosage, refill frequency and then pharmacy.

Not all plans are going to cover a medication the same so it is important to be accurate with which plan and exactly which medication you take so that you can see how the plans formulary (list of covered drugs) applies to your medication.

Before enrolling in a Medicare Part D plan, check the plan’s drug formulary to make sure your prescriptions are covered. You can compare plans using a licensed Medicare agent to enter your medications and preferred pharmacy into a comparison tool. Be sure to check the drug’s tier, estimated copay, and whether there are restrictions such as prior authorization, step therapy, or quantity limits. Because formularies and costs can vary significantly between plans, reviewing all of your prescriptions before enrolling can help prevent unexpected costs.

When you meet with a Medicare broker you will need to provide them with names of your providers and prescriptions you take. They will then enter the information in a comparison tool that shows which plans cover which drugs. Medicare.gov also has a similar tool you can use if you choose to do your own comparison shopping.

The easiest way is to have a Medicare agent do the legwork for you. We have software that will sort through all the plans in your county and find the ones that cover your prescriptions.

If you want, you can go online and call up the formulary for each insurance plan you are considering. A formulary is just a list of what's covered and how each drug is priced.

Recommendation: Put an agent to work for you.
