Q&A with Nina Besant

What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answer: What I love most about being a Medicare agent is being there for people during what can feel like a really overwhelming time. Navigating Medicare can be confusing and even scary, but knowing I can be in their corner—helping them feel supported and confident—means everything to me.

Could Medicare ever adopt a tiered premium system based on lifestyle factors?

Answer: I am not sure I understand this question. I feel like medicare has lots of options and can be based on budget, health factors, lifestyle and what that individual client wants. They have different premium's based off of if you're looking a Medicare Supplement (medigap) plan or a Medicare Advantage plan.

For Medicare Part D, why would someone pick a plan with a high total cost?

Answer: For Medicare Part D plans, it USED to be a higher plan premium could help save on overall copays throughout the year or a lower deductible. We would always look at TOTAL out of pocket costs when looking at a clients Part D. Now with the Inflation Reduction Act, this might be a moot point since ALL Part D plans are now capped at a $2,000 max out of pocket on drugs. I am not sure there is a need to pay a higher monthly premium unless it would help their drug costs or have a larger formulary. I would have to look at the person's medications and run comparisons.

If you had to pick just one, what's the worst Medicare-related decision someone can make?

Answer: Thinking they can do it themselves. The same way you would hire a licensed Plumber, Electrician, car mechanic, etc is the same way you should approach medicare decisions.

I just got Medicare Part A, and I'm worried about hospital stays. How do I know if my overnight stay will be covered fully?

Answer: It depends- if you are admitted or just there for observation. If you are admitted things like your room and board, nursing care, medications and supplies will be covered. Be aware, that Medicare Part A does have a deductible. It is $1,676/ per benefit period!

Is Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage better? Why do you recommend one over the other?

Answer: I think it depends where you live. Depending on your zip code and county one option may be favorable over the other. I always present both options to my clients so they know of all their choices. If they live in a rural area then Original Medicare may be a better fit for them.

Am I eligible for a Special Enrollment Period if I lose employer coverage?

Answer: Yes you are eligible for a Special Enrollment Period when you lose your employer coverage! You would need your employer to complete the L564 form and then you'd submit that along with your medicare application to Social Security to start Medicare.

Who qualifies for Medicare coverage if they are under 65?

Answer: Those under 65 can qualify for Medicare Coverage when certain conditions apply. Typically, one of three things:

1. You have a disability and have been receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 24 months.

2. You have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

3. You have ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease)

Which Medicare Supplement plan (Medigap) offers the best value for most seniors, and why?

Answer: I love medicare supplements! I like Plan N or Plan G. Yes, you have small copays with N- but we are seeing a big cost savings for our clients with Plan N vs plan G.

What benefits are there to working with a Medicare Agent near me vs remote/virtual?

Answer: A medicare agent near you will have a better pulse on the local market as far as plans, carriers and options available and specific to your geographic area. It then allows face-to-face interactions and plan reviews. However, we have hundreds of clients out of state that we work with and they enjoy having ZOOM meetings that can provide that same feel.
