Cheryl Mahon, Medicare Insurance Agent

About Me

It is my passion to educate people new to Medicare (aging in at 65 or coming off of group coverage when you retire). This is when the world is your oyster and you have guaranteed issue for any type of coverage you desire. What type of coverage is best for you? It depends on how often you see your doctors. Do you travel outside of the state? outside of the country? Do you like working with a network of doctors or do you like more freedom? Most of all, your Medicare Insurance needs to fit your budget.

Q&A with Cheryl Mahon

Can I use my Medicare benefits right away in January?

Answer: Yes, you can use your new, or renewed, Medicare benefits starting January 1. If you use Original Medicare without a Medicare Supplement you will have to meet your Part A and/or Part B deductible before Medicare coverage starts. If you have a Medicare Supplement, you may have a deductible to meet before full coverage begins depending on your plan. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan you may have a prescription deductible.

Does Medicare cover hearing aids, or do I have to pay out of pocket?

Answer: While Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids, many Medicare Advantage Plans cover a portion of hearing aid costs.

How can I select the right healthcare company and representative to work with?

Answer: The world is an oyster to new Medicare beneficiaries. I like to explain how Original Medicare works and all the possible additional coverage available to you in your zipcode. We compare the pros and cons of Original Medicare with a stand-alone prescription drug plan, Original Medicare with a Supplement Plan, and Medicare Advantage Plans available to you. Sometimes the best healthcare company is the one that covers your prescriptions and/or where your preferred healthcare providers are in network. There is never a cost to work with a Medicare representative. If you don't feel comfortable working with the first representative you meet, I encourage you to meet with another and another until you find a representative that you feel comforable with.

Will I be penalized if I do not enroll in Medicare when I turn 65?

Answer: If you have credible coverage from an employer, you will not be penalized for enrolling in Medicare Part B after the age of 65. I can help you determine if your group health care coverage is considered credible. After you retire, you will have a special election period to enroll in Medicare Part B when you come off of your group health care plan. You can elect to start your Medicare Part A coverage when you turn 65 or at a later date with no penalty.

Does Medicare cover vision care?

Answer: Original Medicare does not cover vision care. Most Medicare Advantage Plans cover some vision care. I encourage my clients to come plans side by side to see which plan gives the coverage they are looking for.

If I move to a rural area, how might that limit my Medicare Advantage plan options?

Answer: Rural areas tend to have less options for Medicare Advantage plans, but we can use a wide radius when searching for doctors within the network.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: A Medicare agent can help you discern what type of supplemental coverage would be best for you based on your location, how often you see a doctor(s), if you like to travel out of state/country, and your budget.
