What do you enjoy most about working with Medicare clients?
Answer: Medicare can seem complex and over whelming. I enjoy taking the pain out of Medicare and making it simple. The number of plans available is mind boggling, but just going through a clients list of doctors, prescriptions, dental needs, travel needs, etc. helps narrow down the plan options quickly. I like that conversation to feel like a friendly chat, rather than an interrogation. Medicare isn't scary if you work with the right person.
How do you educate clients who are completely new to Medicare?
Answer: I show every client both Medicare options. You can go with the one card system of Medicare Advantage or the three card system of Original Medicare, plus Medicare Supplement and a Prescription Drug Plan. I have a simple way of showing both options. Even if a person insists they know what they want I show both because many are confused about the two options and you will always wonder what the appeal of the other option is if you don't understand both.
What role do you think technology will play in the future of Medicare?
Answer: Technology allows me to narrow a client down from 13 carriers and 129 plans to a couple of options just by entering in doctors, prescriptions and benefits. That allows me to then look at the handful of viable options and use my knowledge to find the right option for that client. As someone who trains medicare agents, I appreciate the technology allowing us the ability to present all options, look at multiple carriers all at once and sort plans by individual benefits. My agents that use the technology available to them are better agents for it. I do not feel it is a replacement for a competent agent as there are limits to the tools, but it lets great agents do their job better, faster and more accurately.
Can I change my Supplemental/Medigap plan at any time?
Answer: It depends on what you are changing to. Can you switch from one Medicare Supplement to another at anytime - yes you may, but there will most likely be underwriting involved. Outside of turning 65 or leaving employer group health insurance there are few opportunities to change a Medicare supplement without being asked health questions. If you do not have health issues changing plans can be very easy.
If you are wanting to change from a Medicare Supplement to a Medicare Advantage plan, that needs to occur during the Annual Enrollment Period from October 15th to December 7th each year.
