What is a Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) plan?

Answered by 4 licensed agents

A Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) plan is a type of Medicare Advantage plan that combines a high-deductible health plan with a special Medical Savings Account.

Each year, the Medicare Advantage plan deposits a set amount of money into the MSA. You can use those funds to pay for qualified medical expenses. Any money you don’t use rolls over from year to year and remains yours to use for future healthcare expenses.

The important thing to understand is that the amount deposited into the MSA is typically less than the plan’s annual deductible. You can use the MSA funds toward your healthcare costs, but if those funds run out before you meet the deductible, you’ll generally pay the remaining Medicare-covered expenses out of pocket until the deductible is reached. After you meet the deductible, the plan generally pays 100% of Medicare-covered Part A and Part B services for the rest of the year.

MSA plans also generally give you the flexibility to see any Medicare-participating provider, rather than using a traditional HMO or PPO network.

One major difference from most Medicare Advantage plans is that MSA plans don’t include Part D prescription drug coverage. If you want drug coverage, you can enroll in a separate Medicare Part D plan.

They’re an interesting option for someone who likes the idea of controlling healthcare dollars themselves, wants provider flexibility, and is comfortable assuming more out-of-pocket risk before the deductible is met.

A Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) is a high-deductible Medicare Advantage plan paired with a special savings account that Medicare funds with an annual tax-free deposit. You use that money to pay for medical care until you meet your deductible, after which the plan covers 100% of your Medicare-approved costs, while any unspent cash rolls over to the next year.
