What happens when your Medicare MSA funds run out?

Answered by 4 licensed agents

With a Medicare MSA plan, if you use all of the money that the plan deposits into your Medical Savings Account, you don’t lose your Medicare coverage. But you generally become responsible for paying your Medicare-covered healthcare expenses out of pocket until you reach the plan’s annual deductible.

The important thing to understand is that the MSA deposit and the deductible are not the same amount. There can be a gap between the two. If you spend all of the MSA funds, you may have to cover that gap with your own money.

Once your Medicare-covered expenses reach the plan’s deductible for the year, the MSA plan generally pays 100% of Medicare-covered Part A and Part B services for the remainder of that year.

Also, any MSA money you don’t spend isn’t lost at the end of the year. It stays in the account and rolls over for future qualified medical expenses.

One other important point: Medicare MSA plans do not include Part D prescription drug coverage, so someone who wants prescription coverage generally needs to enroll in a separate Medicare Part D plan.

If your MSA funds run out then you pay 100% of the Medicare costs until one reaches their deductible. Once they reach their deductible, they pay nothing for the remainder of the year. In January the plan starts over and the deductible requirement also starts over.

The rules surrounding Medicare MSA funds can be complicated. According to Ametros, when MSA funds are exhausted, if you have met certain conditions, Medicare will begin to pay for all covered items related to your injury. It's a good idea to get advice from a knowledgeable professional before making decisions regarding your MSA account.
