How long do I have to change my Medicare plan after I move to a new area?

Answered by 13 licensed agents

If you’re currently in a Medicare Advantage (MA) or MAPD plan and you move permanently to a new area (or new state) where that plan does not operate, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

During this time, you can:

>Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan that serves your new area, or

>Return to Original Medicare and buy a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plan.

IMPORTANT: One of the biggest benefits is that you get GUARANTEED ISSUE rights. This means insurance companies cannot turn you down or charge you more for a Medigap plan because of your health or pre-existing conditions.

Important Details:

>You usually have about 63 days from the time your current plan stops covering you to make a change.

>During this Special Enrollment Period, you can buy most Medigap plans without having to answer medical questions.

>This protection only applies if you’re moving out of your Medicare Advantage plan’s service area. Simply wanting to switch plans does not give you these rights.

If you move out of your current Medicare plan’s service area, you usually get a Special Enrollment Period to make changes. In most cases, you can switch plans starting the month before your move and up to two months after you update your address. Working with a Medicare agent can help make sure you don’t miss the timing or end up with a gap in coverage.

If you notify Medicare of the move before you move you have the month before you move and two months after the move.

Great question.

After moving ZIP Codes, you typically have 2 full months to enroll in a new Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan or Part D plan, as long as your previous plan is not offered in the new service area.

When you move outside of the service area of your current Medicare advantage plan you have 63 days to pick a new plan in your new zip code. If you have a supplement plan you don’t need to change since most of them are portable. You should look into a new part D plan however.

well it depends if your on a medicare advantra plan you have two months the month before you move and two months after that’s if you notify the insurance company

if you move and then tell the insurance company it begins the month when you told the insurance company and then two months after that

if you move out of an medicare advantra plan to original medicare and supp you won’t be have to answer any medical questions but you only have 63 days after your medicare advantra plan ends

thanks

If you tell your plan before you move, 1 month before you move and 2 months after you move.

You get two full months after the month you notify them.

That depends on your plan.

If you have a Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug plan you have 63 days. If you have a Medicare Supplement, there is no need to make a change because the plan has no network or regional limitations.

Your window is:

1 month before you move

And up to 2 months after you move

So total… you’ve got about a 3-month window to make a change.

Don’t wait until after you move and everything is chaos.

If you know you’re moving, start looking before—that way your new plan is ready to roll when you get there.

Because here’s what can happen if you don’t:

You could end up out of network, paying more than you should, or scrambling to fix it after the fact.

And I don’t like scrambling for my people.

One more thing…

Make sure you actually update your address with Social Security. That’s what triggers everything and makes your move “official” in the system.

Bottom line:

You’ve got a short window—but if you plan it right, it’s a smooth transition instead of a stressful one.

And this is one of those moments where having someone guide you through it?

Makes all the difference.

You have 60 days from the time of the move to buy a plan in your new area. If you're sure of your moving date, you can notify them 30 days before and buy a plan in that area within 30 days before moving.

You should do it prior to moving, so it starts when you get there. You have 2 months, but again not smart..... you may have trouble getting your care covered.

If you tell your plan before you move you typically get 3-4 months. 1 month before you move, the month you move and 2 months after your move.

If you tell your plan after you move you typically get 2-3 months. The month you notify them and 2 months after that.

You will have 60 days after reporting your move to SSA office. You will be able to make a plan change for your new area.
