Q&A with Steven Silverthorn

How long do I have to change my Medicare plan after I move to a new area?

Answer: Great question.

After moving ZIP Codes, you typically have 2 full months to enroll in a new Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan or Part D plan, as long as your previous plan is not offered in the new service area.

I want to switch to Medicare Advantage this year. How do I do this?

Answer: That is a great question, since we are outside of Medicare’s Annual Election Period and the Open Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage Plans, you would need a qualifying event to open up a special enrollment period if you wanted to make the change right now. A qualifying event can be moving ZIP Codes, qualifying or losing Medicaid and other events.

To see if you have a Special Enrollment Period, I would suggest setting up an appointment now. If you cannot make a change at this time, I would suggest setting up a I would suggest setting up an appointment in September for us to review your coverage because we will have access to 2027 plans at that time.

I would be more than happy to assist you with this if needed.

How do you get paid, and does it affect the plan you recommend?

Answer: As an independent agent, I am paid a commission by the insurance company my clients signed up with. My commission does not change the cost or coverage of the plan. You can see both of these on www.medicare.gov.

Also, my business is built on referrals so if I don’t do right by my clients, my clients won’t refer their friends and family to me which in turn will hurt my business.

What's one Medicare decision that too many people regret later?

Answer: This is a great question, but very hard to answer because Medicare coverage is personalized based on your current situation and the state you live in.

The most common answer you will most likely see is choosing a Medicare Advantage plan over a Medicare supplement plan but there are different rules with regards to underwriting based on the state you live in.

What is the cost and value of a supplemental plan, and what plans are available?

Answer: The cost of a supplemental plan and the options available, depend on a few variables: your age, your state and your ZIP Code.

I would be more than happy to assist you with understanding your options, the coverage they provide, and your estimated cost.

I'm turning 65 next month; what are the first steps I should take regarding Medicare enrollment?

Answer: Great question. It can be straightforward or there may be a few variables to consider when becoming eligible for Medicare.

If you are turning 65 and want to activate your Medicare (Parts A&B) you can do so online at www.ssa.gov or by calling the Social Security administration number.

If you currently have health insurance from an employer, there are a few variables to consider.

I would be more than happy to assist you and understanding the best path forward.

What should I do if I find out that my preferred hospital isn't in-network with my Medicare Advantage plan?

Answer: It is important to understand the type of Medicare Advantage plan that you have and its network. If your Advantage plan is a PPO, you should be able to go to the out of network hospital, but there will be a higher cost. If it is not a PPO, then you’ll need to stay in your plans network.

It is important to review your Medicare coverage during the Annual Election Period (10/15 to 12/07) because health insurance carriers make changes to plans, networks, and coverage annually.

What role do annuities play in retirement planning?

Answer: Depending on your retirement goals and the type of annuity, they can be a great addition to your portfolio by providing a steady/guaranteed source of income and protection from market volatility.

I'm on Medicare but recently declared bankruptcy due to medical bills. How will this affect my coverage and options going forward?

Answer: It will not directly impact your Medicare coverage as long as you continue to pay your premiums.

The the impact on your medical bills is related to which chapter of bankruptcy you filed for.
