What are Medicare’s coverage options for mental health apps or virtual therapy platforms for seniors with depression or anxiety?

Answered by 21 licensed agents

One's coverage will depend on whether they are on the Original Medicare (Parts A & B), or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C). Both options will offer mental health coverage. However, the MA plans will include other options like the telehealth apps, group or single therapy sessions or other supplemental mental health services. These services can vary between plans.

Like all things Medicare, any mental health services must be FDA approved and provider prescribed. This means if it is part of a treatment plan prescribed by your physician and it is FDA approved, your Part B should cover it after you have met your Part B deductible. If you're on an Advantage plan, be sure to make sure that any mental health provider, including telepathy, is included in the plan's network.

Mental health services usually have a copay depending on the plan so you would want to do a plan comparison to see which one is the least expensive. It can be up to $40-50.

Since the Covid-19 plandemic, telehealth services have been covered 100%

Medicare Part B covers outpatient mental health services, including virtual therapy visits with licensed, Medicare-enrolled providers, when treatment is medically necessary. After you meet the Part B deductible, you typically pay 20% coinsurance. Standalone mental health or meditation apps are generally not covered unless they qualify as FDA-authorized digital therapeutics and are prescribed by a provider. Medicare Advantage plans may offer expanded telehealth or app-based mental health benefits, but coverage varies by plan. Always verify provider participation and platform eligibility before starting services to avoid unexpected costs.

Medicare part B covers outpatient mental health services that involve diagnosing and treating people with mental health conditions, like depression and anxiety. Services are usually provided in a doctor’s or other health care provider’s office, a hospital outpatient department or a community mental health center. Medicare Advantage plans also provide mental health services. Many of these plans offer telehealth visits that lets you connect with a licensed doctor or therapist by phone or video chat.

Medicare Part B (Outpatient Issues): Once your doctor accepts assignment, you will pay nothing for one depression screening per year. This has to be done at your PCP's office or clinic. This will cover you for substance abuse, too. After meeting the one-time/year Part B $257.00 deductible, you will pay 20% of the Medicare approved amount. Group psychotherapy or family counseling is also a possibility if its main purpose is going to help with your treatment. Medication management (= diagnostic testing) is a given as well. Good luck.

Medicare is increasingly covering virtual therapy platforms through telehealth and digital mental health platforms. This would be covered under Medicare Part B as well as part of Medicare Advantage Plans (Medicare Part C) and would generally have the same cost-sharing/copay requirements as in-person visits. To have the mental health app covered, it would need to be FDA approved, a prescription would be necessary from a healthcare provider, and be deemed medically necessary to help with a qualified condition.

Telehealth for mental health is covered by Part B where beneficiaries pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. This includes virtual visits with licensed mental health professionals. Those on Medicare Advantage plans may have access to mental health apps but these extra benefits vary from plan to plan and by location.

Advantage plans as well as traditional Medicare cover mental health office visits and group sessions as well as psychiatric care and virtual visits. Under the Advantage plans they will each have different copays but are generally billed as an office visit. Under traditional Medicare the visit or session would also be billed as an office visit under part B. So with traditional Medicare you would be responsible for 20% unless you have supplemental coverage.

Original Medicare:

Telehealth is covered:

Medicare has expanded telehealth coverage for mental health, including services like virtual therapy, under certain conditions.

Specific conditions:

Beneficiaries must have seen their mental health provider in person within the six months prior to their first telehealth appointment and at least yearly thereafter.

Provider requirements:

The provider must be enrolled in Medicare and the service must be deemed medically necessary.

Coverage for specific apps:

Medicare may not cover specific mental health apps outright, but it may cover services delivered through these apps if the services are provided by a Medicare-enrolled provider.

Medicare Advantage Plans:

Medicare Advantage plans may offer additional benefits:

.

These plans can choose to cover mental health services, including telehealth, beyond what is covered by Original Medicare.

Plan-specific benefits:

.

Beneficiaries with Medicare Advantage plans should check with their specific plan to understand their telehealth coverage and what mental health apps or platforms are included.

Supplemental benefits:

.

Medicare Advantage plans may also offer supplemental benefits for mental health that are not covered by Original Medicare.

Additional Considerations:

Provider-specific:

Even if a mental health app or platform is covered, the specific provider using it must be a Medicare-enrolled provider.

Medically necessary:

The services provided must be deemed medically necessary by the provider to be covered.

Depression screening:

Medicare covers one depression screening per year, which can be a helpful first step for individuals seeking mental health support.

In summary, while Medicare generally covers mental health services, including telehealth, it's crucial to understand the specific coverage options available under Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan, and to ensure that the services provided by a Medicare-enrolled provider are deemed medically necessary.

Medicare does not generally cover mental health apps or virtual therapy platforms unless they are part of an approved treatment plan or offered by a licensed provider.

However, Medicare covers:

Mental health services like therapy sessions (individual or group) under Part B, including telehealth therapy with a licensed provider.

Depression screening under Part B, typically during annual wellness visits.
