Q&A with Michelle Simonds

What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answer: What I enjoy is the opportunity to educate and empower seniors to make confident decisions about their healthcare. Medicare can be overwhelming and I take pride in helping my clients understand their options clearly, avoid common mistakes and feel secure in their coverage choices. It's incredibly rewarding to know that I'm making a difference in their lives by providing guidance they can trust

Are Medicare Advantage plans really "free," or is that just clever marketing?

Answer: You. might hear the term "zero dollar premium" and think Medicare Advantage plans are free - but that's not exactly the case. While some plans do not charge a monthly premium, you still have to pay your Part B premium and you have out of pocket expenses like copays and deductibles when you seek care. These plans can offer great value, but it's important to understand what's covered and what you might still need to pay. I'm here to help you break it all down, so there's no surprises.

What are Medicare’s coverage options for mental health apps or virtual therapy platforms for seniors with depression or anxiety?

Answer: Medicare Part B covers virtual visits with licensed mental health professionals, like therapists and psychiatrists, if they accept Medicare. Some Medicare Advantage plans may also offer mental health apps or virtual therapy platforms as extra benefits. Coverage can vary, so it's important to review your plan details. I am here to help you navigate your options.

What happens to my Medicare coverage if I move to a U.S. territory like Guam or the Virgin Islands?

Answer: Original Medicare (Parts A and B) still covers you in U.S. Territories. However, Medicare Advantage and Part D plans may not be available or may require switching to a local plan. It is important to report your move and review your new coverage options. I can help guide you through the process.

Does Medicare cover weight-loss programs or bariatric surgery if I’m classified as obese?

Answer: Medicare may cover weight loss counseling and in some cases, bariatric surgery, if it's medically necessary and done at a Medicare approved facility. Coverage depends on your health conditions and meeting certain criteria. I can help you check if you qualify.

I've had the same Part D plan for years, but this year my insulin shot up in price. Did the Inflation Reduction Act not fix this yet?

Answer: Yes, the IRA capped out of pocket costs for insulin at $35/month. However, this cap only applies to insulin products that are covered under your specific Part D plan's formulary. If your formulary has changed, you might be paying more. I can assist you in reviewing your options and finding a plan that meets your needs.
