Red, white, and blue Medicare cards are typically sent out when you first go on Medicare, and you would also typically receive a new Medicare card once you pick up Part B Medicare.  Some people work beyond the age of 65 and are covered under their employer's coverage and it would likely be considered creditable coverage.  If a Medicare Beneficiary picks up Part B Medical later, then a new card would be issued.

Outside of this timeframe, people do not usually receive a new Medicare card except in special circumstances.  From time to time, it might be identified that a Medicare Beneficiary Identification number was compromised.  If this is the case, then a Medicare beneficiary would likely receive a new Medicare card along with a letter explaining why a new Medicare card was issued.  

If you need a Medicare card or new Medicare card, there are multiple options to obtain one.  The fastest way is online through MyMedicare.gov.  You are able to see and print a copy of your Medicare card.  You can request it on your Social Security account and select the option to "Replace my Medicare Card."  Social Security is the gatekeeper to Medicare.  You can reach them via phone, but they do have limited hours.  The phone number is:  1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.–7 p.m.  You can also call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE and request a replacement card be mailed to you.  Medicare is open around the clock and on the weekends.

No, there is not a nationwide rollout of new Medicare cards for everyone in 2026. However, about 1.3 million beneficiaries are receiving new Medicare cards with new Medicare numbers due to a security issue involving compromised beneficiary identifiers.

If you're affected, Medicare will mail you a new card along with a letter explaining the reason. Once you receive it, update your healthcare providers with the new Medicare number and securely destroy your old card. If you don't receive a notice, you can continue using your current Medicare card.

Original Medicare cards (your A & B) are not issued every year. However, most Medicare Advantage plans and Part D prescription plans issue new cards for each plan year. Medicare supplements usually do not issue new cards yearly.

There is no nationwide reissue of Medicare cards for 2026.  
CMS has not announced any redesign, replacement cycle, or mandatory card update.

The last major card change happened in 2018–2019, when Medicare removed Social Security numbers and switched to the current 11‑character Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI).

Yes, however not everyone is getting a new Medicare card in 2026.
CMS is not replacing all Medicare cards. Only Medicare beneficiaries that had their existing Medicare numbers compromised in fraud or security incidents.

Medicare is not issuing new cards for everyone.  There is nothing underway to send new cards to every Medicare client.  

However, they are issuing new cards to people who have been affected by a data breach.  The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will be ussing new cards to these customers.  CMS has estimated 1.3 million people received new cards in March with an effective date of April 1.

Make sure your providers have your new Medicare number.  These numbers will not automatically update with doctors and pharmacies.  If you have an online account at Medicare.gov you can confirm your Medicare

Yes, as of June 2025, CMS notified individuals who have been affected by the breach.  New cards will be issued as a safety precaution.  Not everyone will get a new card.  The focus here is to keep Medicare recipients safe.  As a precaution Medicare recipients should monitor their accounts and report it to your health insurance company and or CMS if anything is out of the ordinary.

Some Medicare Beneficiaries are receiving new red, white and blue Original Medicare cards due to security concerns. This is not across the board. As far as insurance cards from the insurance companies go, you do usually receive new ones each year.
