Voss Speros here, Greek god of Medicare. Medicare is all Greek to you? You're in luck, I'm Greek. So the question today is, are caregivers and home health aides usually included in dementia care? Yes, yes. If you have dementia and you're taking care of somebody, or someone's being taken care of, then there's a lot of caregivers involved and home health aides to do the things that they can't normally do. So, assistance with living.

Now, it's not really covered by Medicare. Is home health covered? Home health aides are, but it's tied in with home health on the medical side. On the non-medical side, just caregivers coming in and helping, that's not covered. So that's usually covered by Medicaid or private pay. If you have long-term care insurance, some advantage plans have a little bit of time built in, but not a lot. Eighty hours a year is not a big chunk, not when you need help every day.

I hope that helps. Give us a call if you have any other questions.

Part B covers part-time and intermittent home health for specific services once your doctor certifies it is medically necessary.

Medicare will NOT cover: caregivers, 24hr care, meal delivery, and personal or custodial care.

That all depends on the service. If your Doctor ordered some type of Home Health then you could receive some of those services. But if you are hoping Medicare covers for dementia without a Medically prescribed reason the answer would be know. Dementia by itself does not warrant caregivers or aides.

No, Medicare does not pay for an aide/nurse to remain in the home for safety or supervision. Medicare does pay for Hospice - end-stage dementia; typically where life expectancy is less than 6 months.

es, both professional caregivers and home health aides are included in dementia care, providing a range of support from daily assistance to skilled medical care. Home health aides help with activities of daily living, while general caregivers can provide companionship and social support. Professional home health care services, like those provided by home health aides, can be covered by programs like Medicare if certain eligibility requirements are met, such as being certified as "homebound" by a doctor and needing intermittent skilled care.

Medicare does not cover full‑time caregivers or personal home health aides for dementia care. It only pays for limited, part‑time home health aide services when they are tied to skilled medical care, such as nursing or therapy.

Medicare does not cover long-term caregivers or home health aides for dementia if the care is mainly custodial—meaning help with bathing, dressing, meals, or supervision.

Medicare only covers short-term home health when it’s skilled care ordered by a doctor (like nursing or therapy). It won’t pay for full-time in-home caregivers or long-term dementia support.

Most people use Medicaid, long-term care insurance, or private pay for that type of help.

Yes, caregivers and home health aides can be included in dementia care, especially when skilled care is needed. Medicare may cover home health aide services if they are part of a broader home health care plan that includes skilled nursing or therapy services.

Medicare does not pay for Long Term Care, and therefore typically will not cover home health aides or caregivers for dementia patients.

Medicare can cover home health aides, but you must be aware of the limitations associated. Medicare alone will not cover custodial care or active daily living needs like bathing, dressing or eating. It is important for you to understand what is covered with Original Medicare when looking at needs such as caregivers or home health aides for loved ones who need care for dementia.
